Questions raised in science education : a Colombian-Spanish comparative study

2016

Brain representation of action observation in human infants.

2015

Imitative learning has long been established as extremely important for early development. However, neural mechanisms involved in early imitative behaviours are still areas of active research. Neurophysiological and brain-imaging studies have been recently performed that provide initial evidence of brain activation associated with action observation in the first months of life. In this review we examine all studies exploring the effects of action observation on brain function assessed by means of non-invasive brain-mapping techniques. Seventeen papers were selected as a result of our literature search. The strongest evidence for a neural signature of action observation comes from studies ex…

The role of achievement beliefs and behaviours in spontaneous reading acquisition

2006

Abstract This study examined the role of motivational or attitudinal factors, such as achievement beliefs and behaviours, in learning to read before receiving formal instruction. A total of 200 Finnish children were examined at ages 5 and 6½. Half of them ( n  = 107) had a familial risk for dyslexia. The results showed that those children who were verbally skilful at age 5 showed a higher level of task-focused behaviour at age 6½. This task-focused behaviour then contributed to spontaneous reading acquisition. The impact of previous verbal skills on spontaneous reading acquisition was mediated in part by achievement behaviour.

An Analysis of a Single Case of Comorbidity between Learning Disability and Borderline Intellectual Functioning

2012

Abstract In this study we explored a case of comorbidity between DSA and Borderline Intellectual Functioning. The girl was fourteen years old, ninth grade of school in Palermo, with significant learning difficulties. Two interviews were conducted, one with parents and one with teachers, to investigate the history of the girl's learning. In the pre-test phase the following cognitive areas were investigated: Q.I. (Level of Intelligence), decoding ability, reading comprehension and writing skills. Motivational-emotional profile was also evaluated: school motivation, self-handicapping strategies, self esteem and school anxiety. To assess these cognitive areas we used: Reading Comprehension Test…

The Role of e-Tutor Competencies in Postgraduate e-Learning Courses: Spotlight on Emotion Management

2021

The role of e-learning in the existing and challenging educational era is crucial. However, it is necessary to overcome some drawbacks such as feelings of isolation and a lack of emotional contact. In this sense, emotion management is a key driver of student satisfaction in e-learning, which is significantly related to students’ motivation, learning, cognitive strategies, self-regulation, and personality antecedents in the classroom. This article examines an online postgraduate course in financial statements auditing, describing the resources used by the e-tutor to conduct affective tutorials, reduce students’ feelings of isolation, increase student involvement, and achieve success in e-lea…

Utopianism in the Age of Capitalocene

2021

This article explores the social and political imagination of ‘the Anthropocene’ and the utopian counter images that can be derived from it. From the utopian studies perspective, I argue that the Anthropocene cannot provide sufficient societal alternatives for the current ecological predicament. This is due to the fact that the concept of Anthropocene relies too heavily on the image of abstract humanity to be able to offer real societal alternatives. It cannot name the social system we live in and, therefore, it cannot fundamentally challenge existing social arrangements. Based on utopian social theory, I conceptualize utopia as a counter image of the present motivated by a desire for bette…

TEACHER IN CITIZENSHIP EDUCATION LEARNING PROCESS

2018

The recent reforms in the Latvian general education curriculum along with a school network reorganization have brought new attention  to the issues related to a teacher education and the level of professionalism in everyday teaching work. Soviet-era education and work experience in diverse political and education systems (under the Soviet rule and after the restoration of independence) are factors that should be taken into account when analyzing the teacher in the citizenship education learning process. For the needs of this Paper, the authors used the data of the IEA ICCS 2016 (International Association for the Evaluation of Educational Achievement International Civic and Citizenship Study…

Factors Influencing Lower Secondary School Pupils’ Success in Programming Projects in Scratch

2020

In the Czech Republic, a radical change in the school curriculum is planned. Through a new, compulsory subject of “Informatics and ICT”, the aim is to develop digital literacy across all school subjects, and computational thinking. Computational thinking will be implemented in the curriculum of pre-primary, primary, lower and upper secondary schools, and in teacher education at all faculties of education in the Czech Republic. To ensure readiness for the implementation of the new subject, it has been necessary to prepare and develop a set of learning materials for pupils and teaching guidelines for teachers. These textbooks focus on robotics, programming (Scratch, Python), and theoretical c…

Projection of the Flipped Learning Methodology in the Teaching Staff of Cross-Border Contexts

2019

Technological impact and immigration have resulted in ICT playing a significant role in educational adaptation to multicultural environments. This study focuses on flipped learning as an innovative teaching method. The overall objectives of this research are, on the one hand, to carry out a review of the scientific literature about flipped learning, and, on the other hand, to know the extent of its scope amongst teaching staff in cross-border regions. To achieve these objectives, a quantitative method has been developed through a descriptive model. 316 teachers from different educational centres of the Spanish Autonomous City of Ceuta (Spain) were selected as a sample, and an ad hoc questio…
