 This study analyses lexical diversity (sums of probabilities) in spoken narratives of L1 and L2 school age children (n = 99) and compares the results to the lexical diversity of written narratives of the group of comparison. The goal of this study is to examine how the relatively new phenomenon of multilingualism in the Finnish education system is presently managed in foreign language classes in the Finnish comprehensive school. The focus is on how bi- and multilingual learners with migration background can benefit from their previous individual language experiences, language learning experiences and language awareness processes, and how these function as a resource for their further (foreign) language learning process. Utterance fluency in Finnish Sign Language L1 and L2 signing

This paper explores the fluency of first language (L1) and second language (L2) signers of Finnish Sign Language. The phenomenon was approached by measuring utterance fluency using speed and breakdown parameters. The findings revealed clear differences between L1 and L2 signers regarding the measured fluency parameters. On average, L1 signers produced more signs and had fewer breakdowns per minute than L2 signers. However, the slowest L1 signer and the fastest L2 signer were more similar to each other than the averages of the L1 group’s (129.3) and the L2 group’s (71.4) signs per minute might suggest. Tämän tutkimuksen tarkoituksena oli katsoa englannin ja ruotsin oppimista koulun ulkopuolella toiminnan teorian ja erityisesti Engeströmin (1987, 1999) toimintajärjestelmämallin näkökulmasta, josta aihetta ei ole aiemmin lähestytty. This chapter explores how experientially based pedagogical activities that involve participation in real life service encounters provide occasions for developing L2 interactional competence. The data comprises novice L2 students’ self-recorded interactions in service settings and videorecordings of classroom planning activities and de-briefing discussions, where the students reflect on their experiences. The analysis traces what kinds of occasions for learning arise as the students move between the classroom and the real-world service settings.
