How to integrate dreaming into a general theory of consciousness—A critical review of existing positions and suggestions for future research

2011

In this paper, we address the different ways in which dream research can contribute to interdisciplinary consciousness research. As a second global state of consciousness aside from wakefulness, dreaming is an important contrast condition for theories of waking consciousness. However, programmatic suggestions for integrating dreaming into broader theories of consciousness, for instance by regarding dreams as a model system of standard or pathological wake states, have not yielded straightforward results. We review existing proposals for using dreaming as a model system, taking into account concerns about the concept of modeling and the adequacy and practical feasibility of dreaming as a mod…

Automatic bilevel ventilation (AutoBI) in obstructive sleep-disordered breathing (SDB): clinical features and compliance to treatment

2017

CPAP is the first-choice treatment for obstructive SDB, but the criteria to prescribe AutoBI are undefined. Trials of AutoBI ventilation in patients under titration for obstructive SDB from January 2015 to January 2017 ((n=67 out of 265 titrations) were reviewed to assess: a) their clinical features, b) the reason to shift from CPAP to AutoBI, and c) long-term compliance to treatment. AutoBI was used in cases of intolerance to high therapeutic CPAP levels (n=23) or incomplete resolution of SDB on CPAP (n=45). AutoBI failed in 11 patients (16.4%): 2 OSA patients (7.7%), 4 overlap patients (21%), and 5 OHS patients (22.7%). The Table reports the differences at diagnosis between patients presc…

Organized Learning Models (Pursuer Control Optimisation)

1982

Abstract The concept of Organized Learning is defined, and some random models are presented. For Not Transferable Learning, it is necessary to start from an instantaneous learning; by a discrete way, we must form a stochastic model considering the probability of each path; with a continue aproximation, we can study the evolution of the internal state through to consider the relative and absolute probabilities, by means of differential equations systems. For Transferable Learning, the instantaneous learning give us directly the System evolution. So, the Algoritmes for the different models are compared.

Multi-modality of polysomnography signals’ fusion for automatic sleep scoring

2019

Abstract Objective The study aims to develop an automatic sleep scoring method by fusing different polysomnography (PSG) signals and further to investigate PSG signals’ contribution to the scoring result. Methods Eight combinations of four modalities of PSG signals, namely electroencephalogram (EEG), electrooculogram (EOG), electromyogram (EMG), and electrocardiogram (ECG) were considered to find the optimal fusion of PSG signals. A total of 232 features, covering statistical characters, frequency characters, time-frequency characters, fractal characters, entropy characters and nonlinear characters, were derived from these PSG signals. To select the optimal features for each signal fusion, …

2020

Abstract Efficient neuronal communication between brain regions through oscillatory synchronization at certain frequencies is necessary for cognition. Such synchronized networks are transient and dynamic, established on the timescale of milliseconds in order to support ongoing cognitive operations. However, few studies characterizing dynamic electrophysiological brain networks have simultaneously accounted for temporal non-stationarity, spectral structure, and spatial properties. Here, we propose an analysis framework for characterizing the large-scale phase-coupling network dynamics during task performance using magnetoencephalography (MEG). We exploit the high spatiotemporal resolution of…

Sleep assessment devices: types, market analysis, and a critical view on accuracy and validation

2019

[EN] Introduction: Sleep assessment devices are essential for the detection, diagnosis, and monitoring of sleep disorders. This paper provides a state-of-the-art review and comparison of sleep assessment devices and a market analysis. Areas covered: Hardware devices are classified into contact and contactless devices. For each group, the underlying technologies are presented, paying special attention to their limitations. A systematic literature review has been carried out by comparing the most important validation studies of sleep tracking devices in terms of sensitivity and specificity. A market analysis has also been carried out in order to list the most used, best-selling, and most high…

The RFID technology for neurosciences: feasibility of limbs' monitoring in sleep diseases.

2009

This contribution investigates the feasibility of the passive UHF RF identification technology for the wireless monitoring of human body movements in some common sleep disorders by means of passive tags equipped with inertial switches. Electromagnetic and mechanical models as well as preliminary experimentations are introduced to analyze all the significant issues concerning the required power, the tag antenna design, the read distance, and the expected biosignals collected by the interrogation device.

Information dynamics of brain-heart physiological networks during sleep

2014

This study proposes an integrated approach, framed in the emerging fields of network physiology and information dynamics, for the quantitative analysis of brain-heart interaction networks during sleep. With this approach, the time series of cardiac vagal autonomic activity and brain wave activities measured respectively as the normalized high frequency component of heart rate variability and the EEG power in the δ, θ, σ, and β bands, are considered as realizations of the stochastic processes describing the dynamics of the heart system and of different brain sub-systems. Entropy-based measures are exploited to quantify the predictive information carried by each (sub)system, and to dissec…
