This study investigated the relationship between self-reported sleep factors (sleep duration, insomnia, use of sleeping medicine, probable sleep apnoea and feelings of fatigue and tiredness) with cognitive functioning in 5177 people aged 30 years or older from a cross-sectional representative sample of the adult population in Finland (The Finnish Health 2000 Survey). Sleep disordered breathing in patients with cardiovascular comorbidities hospitalized for pulmonary disease

Sleep disordered breathing (SDB) is often overlooked in hospitalized patients. We screened consecutive patients with cardiovascular (CV) comorbidities hospitalized for respiratory problems to study SDB prevalence and type. Patients did not refer typical clinical signs of SDB. Patients (n=34, 21 M, mean age±SD 71±12 yr, BMI: 31.9±5.8 kg/m2) were studied by polygraphy (SomnoLab, Weinmann, Germany) 4.5±3.2 days after admission for COPD exacerbation (COPD-E, n=20), pleural effusion (n=2), asthma exacerbation (n=2) or other causes (n=10). Until recently, mechanisms responsible for an activation of the glymphatic system of the brain, the system which is responsible for cleansing of this organ of waste products, were unclear. A recently published paper has finally shed some light on this problem. Background: While acute stress and pain are part of our inherent survival mechanisms, persistent stress and pain can negatively impact health and well-being. This may also lead to poor sleep and thus a lack of recovery. This study investigated the influence of stress and musculoskeletal pain on sleep quality. An automatic procedure for the online recognition of REM sleep appears to be a necessary tool for selective REM sleep deprivation in depressive patients. To develop such a procedure we applied an artificial neural network to preprocessed single-channel EEG activity. EOG and EMG information was purposely not provided as input to the network. A generalized back-propagation algorithm was used for computer simulation. Recurrent On-Duty Sleepiness and Alertness Management Strategies in Long-Haul Airline Pilots

Introduction We examined whether long-haul airline pilots without recurrent on-duty sleepiness obtain more prior sleep and use more effective in-flight alertness management strategies than their colleagues with recurrent on-duty sleepiness. Methods There were 51 pilots who flew at least twice from Helsinki to Asia. Of them, 44 flew at least twice back to Helsinki following 1 local night. On-duty sleepiness was measured by the Karolinska Sleepiness Scale (KSS), alertness management strategies by a diary, and sleep by a diary and activity monitor. It is important to develop shift schedules that minimise the chance for sleep-related human error in safety-critical domains. Experimental data on the effects of sleep restriction (SR) play a key role in this development work.
