Friction stir extrusion to recycle aluminum alloys scraps: Energy efficiency characterization

2019

Abstract Solid state recycling refers to a group of processes allowing direct recycling of metals scraps into semi-finished product. Their main advantage lies in avoiding the molten state of the material which badly affects the environmental performance of the conventional (remelting based) recycling routes. It is expected that such process category would lower the environmental performance of metals recycling. In this paper, the friction stir extrusion process for aluminum alloy AA 2050 wire production is analyzed under the primary energy demand perspective. The process electrical energy demand is quantified with varying process parameters. An empirical modelling approach was applied and a…

Uncovering Technological and Environmental Potentials of Aluminum Alloy Scraps Recycling Through Friction Stir Consolidation

2020

Conventional metal chips recycling processes are energy-intensive with low efficiency and permanent material losses during re-melting. Solid state recycling allows direct recycling of metal scraps into semi-finished products. It is expected that this process category would lower the environmental performance of metals recycling. Friction Stir Consolidation is a new solid-state technique taking advantage of friction heat generation and severe plastic deformation to consolidate chips into billets. In this research, the feasibility of Friction Stir Consolidation as aluminum chips recycling process is analyzed. Specifically, an experimental campaign has been carried out with varying main proces…

Direct laser welding of pure titanium to austenitic stainless steel

2018

Abstract Direct butt joining of pure titanium to 316L stainless steel with continuous Yb:YAG laser was performed with variation of the beam offset from joint line. Mechanical properties of samples were evaluated by tensile tests and three-point flexural tests. The fractured surfaces and cross sections of welds were examined by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) and X-ray diffraction (XRD). Tensile properties of welds were strongly determined by the beam offset from joint line and are well described by Weibull statistics. Ultimate tensile strength of 174 ± 69 MPa and ultimate flexural strength of 297 ± 48 MPa were obtained. Brittle fracture took place in…

Al-SiC Metal Matrix Composite production through Friction Stir Extrusion of aluminum chips

2017

Abstract The production of most mechanical component requires machining operation, thus usually implying the cut material to be wasted as scrap. Traditional recycling techniques are not able to efficiently recycle metal chips because of some critical aspects that characterize such kind of scraps (shape, oxide layers, contaminating residues, etc). Friction Stir Extrusion is an innovative solid state direct-recycling technique for metal machining chips. During the process, a rotating tool is plunged into a hollows matrix to compact, stir and finally, back extrudes the chips to be recycled in a full dense rod. This process results to be particularly relevant since no preliminary treatment of t…

Through-transmission laser welding of polymers – temperature field modeling and infrared investigation

2007

The purpose of the present study is to estimate the weldability of a polymeric material couple according to their thermal and optical properties. A first model based on Mie theory and Monte Carlo method describes the laser beam behavior in semi-transparent media and makes it possible to approximate the laser power distribution at the interface of the two materials. A second model based on finite element method permits the temperature field estimation into both parts to be welded. The results are validated by infrared thermography.

Mathematical models for a cutting problem in the glass manufacturing industry

2021

Abstract The glass cutting problem proposed for the ROADEF 2018 challenge is a two-dimensional, three-stage guillotine cutting process, with an additional cut to obtain pieces in some specific situations. However, it is not a standard problem because it includes specific constraints. The sheets produced in the glass manufacturing process have defects that make them different and have to be used in order. The pieces to be cut are grouped into subsets and the pieces from each subset must be cut in order. We approach the problem by developing and solving integer linear models. We start with the basic model, which includes the essential features of the problem, as a classical three-stage cuttin…

Sampled Fictitious Play on Networks

2019

We formulate and solve the problem of optimizing the structure of an information propagation network between multiple agents. In a given space of interests (e.g., information on certain targets), each agent is defined by a vector of their desirable information, called filter, and a vector of available information, called source. The agents seek to build a directed network that maximizes the value of the desirable source-information that reaches each agent having been filtered en route, less the expense that each agent incurs in filtering any information of no interest to them. We frame this optimization problem as a game of common interest, where the Nash equilibria can be attained as limit…

Meta-heuristic Algorithms for Nesting Problem of Rectangular Pieces

2017

Abstract Nesting problems consist of placing multiple items onto larger shapes finding a good arrangement. The goal of the nesting process is to minimize the waste of material. It is common to assume, as in the present work, that the stock sheet has fixed width and infinite height, since in the real world a company may have to cut pieces from a roll of material. The complexity of such problems is often faced with a two-stage approach, so-called “hybrid algorithm”, combining a placement routine and a meta-heuristic algorithm. Starting from a given positioning sequence, the placement routine generates a non-overlapping configuration. The encoded solution is manipulated and modified by the met…

Game Theoretic Decentralized Feedback Controls in Markov Jump Processes

2017

This paper studies a decentralized routing problem over a network, using the paradigm of mean-field games with large number of players. Building on a state-space extension technique, we turn the problem into an optimal control one for each single player. The main contribution is an explicit expression of the optimal decentralized control which guarantees the convergence both to local and to global equilibrium points. Furthermore, we study the stability of the system also in the presence of a delay which we model using an hysteresis operator. As a result of the hysteresis, we prove existence of multiple equilibrium points and analyze convergence conditions. The stability of the system is ill…

GRASP and tabu search for the generalized dispersion problem

2021

Abstract The problem of maximizing dispersion requires the selection of a specific number of elements from a given set, in such a way that the minimum distance between the pairs of selected elements is maximized. In recent years, this problem has received a lot of attention and has been solved with many complex heuristics. However, there is a recent variant in which the selected elements have to satisfy two realistic constraints, a minimum capacity limit and a maximum budget, which in spite of its practical significance in facility location, has received little attention. In this paper, we first propose mathematical models to obtain the optimal solution of small- and medium-size instances, …
