Retrograde transport of sodium selenite and intracellular injection of micro-ruby: a combined method to describe the morphology of zinc-rich neurones.

2003

Abstract Zinc is found in synaptic vesicles in a large number of glutamatergic systems. Its involvement in neurotransmission and neurological disorders has been suggested. There are methods for tracing these circuits, but they do not fill the dendritic tree. In this study, extracellular selenite injections in vivo were combined with intracellular injection of fluorochromes in fixed tissue to reveal the morphology of these zinc-rich neurones. Intraperitoneal and intracerebral injections of sodium selenite alone or intracerebral injections of selenite combined with bisbenzimide were made in the visual cortex of the rat in order to locate the somata of zinc-rich neurones. After 24 h of retrogr…

Early Low-Fat Diet Enriched With Linolenic Acid Reduces Liver Endocannabinoid Tone and Improves Late Glycemic Control After a High-Fat Diet Challenge…

2016

International audience; Evidence suggests that alterations of glucose and lipid homeostasis induced by obesity are associated with the elevation of endocannabinoid tone. The biosynthesis of the two main endocannabinoids, N-arachidonoylethanolamine and 2-arachidonoyl-glycerol, which derive from arachidonic acid, is influenced by dietary fatty acids (FAs). We investigated whether exposure to n-3 FA at a young age may decrease tissue endocannabinoid levels and prevent metabolic disorders induced by a later high-fat diet (HFD) challenge. Three-week-old mice received a 5% lipid diet containing lard, lard plus safflower oil, or lard plus linseed oil for 10 weeks. Then, mice were challenged with a…

Incorporation and metabolism of dietary trans isomers of linolenic acid alter the fatty acid profile of rat tissues

2000

To study the influence on lipid metabolism and platelet aggregation of the fatty acid isomerization that occurs during heat treatment, weanling rats were fed for 8 wk a diet enriched with 5% isomerized (experimental group) or normal (control group) canola oil. Geometrical isomers of alpha-linolenic acid representing 0.2 g/100 g of the experimental diet were incorporated into liver, platelets, aorta and heart, at the expense of their cis homologue and of 18:2(n-6). The major isomer, 9c,12c,15t-18:3, was also metabolized to 5c,8c,11c,14c,17t-20:5 and to an unknown compound, found in liver, platelets and aorta, which has been identified tentatively as 7c, 10c,13c,16c,19t-22:5. The greater 20:4…

Microremains from El Mirón Cave human dental calculus suggest a mixed plant/animal subsistence economy during the Magdalenian in Northern Iberia

2015

Abstract Despite more than a century of detailed investigation of the Magdalenian period in Northern Iberia, our understanding of the diets during this period is limited. Methodologies for the reconstruction of Late Glacial subsistence strategies have overwhelmingly targeted animal exploitation, thus revealing only a portion of the dietary spectrum. Retrieving food debris from calculus offers a means to provide missing information on other components of diet. We undertook analysis of human dental calculus samples from Magdalenian individuals (including the “Red Lady”) at El Miron Cave (Cantabria, Spain), as well as several control samples, to better understand the less visible dietary compo…

Segmented Flow-Based Multistep Synthesis of Cadmium Selenide Quantum Dots with Narrow Particle Size Distribution

2015

A continuous-flow microreactor was used to synthetize II-VI semiconductor quantum dots (CdSe). In order to improve the size distribution of the nanoparticles, the synthesis was carried out in a two-step procedure. A seed solution was obtained in a separate nucleation step, followed by a controllable growth step. Quantum dots that are synthesized with the two-step method show a much narrower size distribution in comparison to those obtained in a conventional batch synthesis.

Electrodeless HF-lamps as UV and VUV light sources

2002

The paper is devoted to problems of employment of high- frequency electrodeless lamps as ultra violet (UV) and vacuum ultra violet (VUV) light sources. Some aspects of lamp preparation technology for UV and VUV are considered. The technology, developed in our laboratory, allows to prepare HFEL-s filled with wide spread of chemical elements. Our experience shows that most important filling elements for UV and VUV spectral regions are Zn, Cd, Hg, Se, As, Sn and Pb, Sb, Bi, Tl, Te, I, H, Hg-Cd, Hg-Zn, Se-Te. The requirements for generators are discussed. Some important spectral characteristics of lamp examples are presented.

Metal speciation in biological fluids — a review

1996

The literature on the speciation of metal ions in biological fluids is comprehensively reviewed. Critical examination on this subject reveals that major work has been done in blood and urine. Speciation in materials like milk has not yet been widely studied. On the other hand, only few references could be found on sweat, saliva, cell lysate, cerebrospinal, seminal, tear and bronchoalveolar fluids. The topics studied for these fluids were mainly the speciation of arsenic, mercury, aluminium and selenium. Work on the speciation of other elements like zinc, chromium, cadmium, lead, copper, iron etc. have also been carried out in such matrices. The present literature survey includes also a crit…

Challenges and new prospects in hepatosplenic γδ T-cell lymphoma.

2014

Peripheral T-cell lymphomas (PTCLs) are a heterogeneous group of lymphoid neoplasms characterized by aggressive clinical behavior and dismal prognosis. Hepatosplenic γδ T-cell lymphoma (γδ-HSTL) is a particular form of PTCL that arises from a small subset of γ/δ T-cell receptor-expressing lymphocytes. γδ-HSTL has a rapidly progressive course and poor outcome due also to its refractoriness to conventional chemotherapy regimens. The very low incidence of γδ-HSTL, along with its propensity to mimic different pathological entities, makes this lymphoma a true diagnostic challenge. In this review, we highlight the biological and clinical features of γδ-HSTL that contribute to making this lymphoma…

Genomic Abnormalities Acquired in the Blastic Transformation of Splenic Marginal Zone B-cell Lymphoma

2003

Among 20 cases of typical splenic marginal zone lymphoma (SMZL), two cases had blastic transformation. The genetic mechanisms underlying the morphologic transformation were investigated by comparing genetic changes in initial and blastic phases. A complex karyotype including trisomy of 3q and genomic gain of 17q22-q24 was seen in both cases at diagnosis. However, the extra copy of 3q was lost during the transformation process in both tumors. Additionally, the Karpas 1718 cell line, which was derived from a patient with transformed SMZL and carried a trisomy of 3q, also evidenced the spontaneous loss of the extra 3q during the culturing process. Other acquired abnormalities observed exclusiv…

Cancer-cell traffic in the liver. I. Growth kinetics of cancer cells after portal-vein delivery

1992

Following the intrasplenic injection of B16F10 melanoma cells into mice, at first single cells, and later multicellular tumor foci were observed at different times in the liver. Cell numbers and tumor volumes were determined over the next 12 days, by confocal microscopy of thick liver sections. Fifteen minutes after injection, approximately 20% of the melanoma cells were identified in the liver microvasculature; after 48 hr, only 0.68% of these retained morphologic integrity; by 5 days only 0.13% of the originally detected cells incorporated BUdR; and, by 12 days, these subsequently grew into tumor nodules. Tumor volume changes with time were not exponential and, following a non-replicative…
