Inhibition of fatty acid delta 6- and delta 5-desaturation by cyclopropene fatty acids in rat liver microsomes.
1993
delta 6-Desaturation of linoleic acid and delta 5-desaturation of dihomo-gamma-linolenic acid were measured in liver microsomes from rats fed fresh Baobab seed oil containing cyclopropene fatty acids (malvalic acid and sterculic acid) or heated Baobab seed oil practically devoid of these fatty acids or control oil. The presence of cyclopropene fatty acids in the fresh Baobab oil diet highly depressed both desaturations, but delta 6- more than delta 5-desaturation. The decreased capacity of microsomes to desaturate was reflected in the lower arachidonic acid content in microsomal phospholipids from rats fed this oil. However it was also lower in rats fed heated oil although in vitro delta 6-…
Efficacy and safety study of an eyelid gel after repeated nocturnal application in healthy contact lens users and non-users
2020
Purpose: To evaluate skin biocompatibility of a nighttime hydrating eyelid gel and possible ocular surface effects in contact lens users (CLU) and non-contact lens users (NCLU). The formulation is registered as a medical device as Tridocosahexaenoine-AOX® (TDHA-AOX) (a concentrated DHA triglyceride), containing also hyaluronic acid (HA). Methods: A prospective, randomized, masked clinical trial was performed with 62 participants of both sexes, aged 20–70 years, split into: (1) CLU (n = 30) and (2) NCLU (n = 32). All participants were instructed to apply a single dose of the moisturizing gel (containing TDHA-AOX and HA) nightly to the upper and inner eyelids of their right eye (RE) only, and…

Hydride generation atomic fluorescence spectrometric determination of ultratraces of selenium and tellurium in cow milk
2003
Abstract A sensitive procedure has been developed for selenium and tellurium determination in milk by hydride generation atomic fluorescence spectrometry (HG-AFS) after microwave-assisted sample digestion. The method provides sensitivity values of 1591 and 997 fluorescence units ng−1 ml−1 with detection limits of 0.005 and 0.015 ng ml−1 for Se and Te, respectively. The application of the developed methodology to the analysis of cow milk samples of the Spanish market evidenced the presence of concentration ranges from 11.1 to 26.0 ng ml−1 for Se, and from 1.04 to 9.7 ng ml−1 for Te having found a good comparability with data obtained after dry-ashing of samples.
Speciation of selenium and tellurium in milk by hydride generation atomic fluorescence spectrometry
2004
A simple, fast and highly sensitive method has been developed for the differentiation of Se and Te into their (IV) and (VI) oxidation states in milk samples by HG-AFS. This procedure involves a previous leaching of milk slurries by sonication with aqua regia for 10 min. Se(IV) and Te(IV) were determined by analysis of the samples without a pre-reduction step; being total Se and Te determined after reduction with KBr. The method provides limit of detection values (LOD) of 0.012 and 0.023 ng ml−1 for Se(IV) and Te(IV) respectively. Average relative standard deviation values of 10.5%, 3.9%, 12% and 12.5% were found for the determination of Se(IV), Se(VI), Te(IV) and Te(VI) in milk samples cont…
GFAAS determination of selenium in infant formulas using a microwave digestion method.
1994
A method for determining the selenium content of infant formulas is proposed. It includes wet digestion with nitric acid and hydrogen peroxide in medium pressure teflon bombs in a microwave oven and determination by graphite furnace atomic absorption spectrometry (GFAAS). The absence of interferences is checked. Values obtained for the limit of detection (19.4 ng/g), precision (RSD = 2.2%) and accuracy by analysis of a reference material show that the method is reliable.
Multi-pumping mechanised determination of selenium in natural waters by light emitting diode (LED) spectrometry
2009
It has been developed a fully mechanised procedure for the determination of selenium in waters employing a LED based spectrometer and solenoid multi-pumps as solution propelling devices. The proposed method is based on the reaction of selenium with potassium iodide in an acidic medium to liberate iodine, which oxidizes Variamine Blue to form a violet-colour species which absorb at 530 nm. The system was mechanised using the multicommutation process and a stopped flow strategy in the final step reaction. The analytical curve was linear between 0.010 and 0.500 mg L-1, with an equation ΔA = 0.501 (± 0.004) C and r = 0.999. The limit of detection (3σ/S) obtained for the proposed method was 0.00…
How I diagnose and treat splenic lymphomas.
2011
Abstract The incidental finding of an isolated splenomegaly during clinical assessment of patients evaluated for unrelated causes has become increasingly frequent because of the widespread use of imaging. Therefore, the challenging approach to the differential diagnosis of spleen disorders has emerged as a rather common issue of clinical practice. A true diagnostic dilemma hides in distinguishing pathologic conditions primarily involving the spleen from those in which splenomegaly presents as an epiphenomenon of hepatic or systemic diseases. Among the causes of isolated splenomegaly, lymphoid malignancies account for a relevant, yet probably underestimated, number of cases. Splenic lymphoma…

Experimental and Theoretical Studies on alfa-In2Se3 at High Pressure
2018
[EN] alpha(R)-In2Se3 has been experimentally and theoretically studied under compression at room temperature by means of X-ray diffraction and Raman scattering measurements as well as by ab initio total-energy and lattice-dynamics calculations. Our study has confirmed the alpha (R3m) -> beta' (C2/m) ? beta (R (3) over barm) sequence of pressure-induced phase transitions and has allowed us to understand the mechanism of the monoclinic C2/m to rhombohedral R (3) over barm phase transition. The monoclinic C2/m phase enhances its symmetry gradually until a complete transformation to the rhombohedral R (3) over barm structure is attained above 10-12 GPa. The second-order character of this transi…
