Selenium contents of human milk and infant formulas in Spain.

1999

The selenium content of Spanish human milk samples and different milk-based and soy-based infant formulas has been estimated by using a flow injection hydride atomic absorption spectrometric method after microwave digestion of the organic matter. Mean values of 11.4 +/- 3.7 and 10.7 +/- 4.6 ng/ml for colostrum and transitional milk, 8.4 +/- 3.4 and 5.3 +/- 1.9 ng/ml for mature milk at 1 month and up to 2 months respectively, was obtained. These values are close to those reported by others authors in Europe, and lower than the ones from the US, Japan and Korea. Selenium contents of the analyzed infants' formulas ranged from 2.7 to 9.6 ng/ml and from 1.8 to 7.5 ng/ml for soy and milk-based in…

Petrographic and geochemical characterization of Archaic-Hellenistic tableware production at Solunto, Sicily

2009

A selected assortment of Archaic-Hellenistic tableware samples from Solunto, a Phoenician-Punic site located 20 km east of Palermo (Sicily), has been subjected to thin-section petrography and chemical analysis (XRF). In this settlement several ceramic kilns remained operative over a long time period (7th to 3rd century B.C.). The main goal of this analytical study is to distinguish the ceramics manufactured locally from regional and off-island imports. Analytical results were matched to similar data concerning local natural clay sources and to coeval tableware productions from other sites in the same area. The ceramic pastes used by the ancient craftsmen of Solunto in the case of this class…

Vegetation of rock clefts and ledges in the Pamir Alai Mts, Tajikistan (Middle Asia)

2014

AbstractThe paper presents the results of phytosociological research conducted on the vegetation of rock clefts and ledges in the Pamir-Alai Mountains (Tajikistan, Middle Asia). During the field studies, done in 2010–2012, 101 phytosociological relevés were taken. Plant species were recorded according to the Braun-Blanquet cover-abundance scale. Communities of calcareous rock clefts and ledges with small soil amounts from several ranges (Zeravshan Mts, Hissar Mts, Hazratishokh Mts, Darvaz Mts, Rushan Mts and Vanch Mts), inhabiting mainly the alpine and subnival zone, have been described. A synopsis of the rock communities of the Pamir-Alai is proposed. In the examined vegetation plots 77 va…

Diastereoselective synthesis of substituted 2-phenyltetrahydropyrans as useful precursors of aryl C-glycosides via selenoetherification

2004

The cyclization of several substituted 5-phenyl-pent-4-en-1-ols with selenium electrophiles along some mechanistic considerations is discussed. In particular, an efficient diastereoselective synthesis of a 2,3,5,6-tetrasubstitued tetrahydropyran is reported. These findings open an interesting approach: the use of chiral selenium electrophiles for cyclization of chiral substrates. The cyclized products are useful starting material for the synthesis of D- or L-aryl C-glycosides.

Antiasthmatic effects of gamma linolenic acid -high dose Evening Primrose Oil and Borage Oil stimulate allergen tachyphylaxis of sensitized guinea pi…

2012

Summary Evening primose oil (EPO) and borage oil (BO), which contain high amounts of gamma linolenic acid (10% or 20%) and are described to stimulate prostaglandin E biosynthesis, were investigated in guinea pigs for their ability to stimulate an important active self protecting mechanism against allergens (“allergen tachyphylaxis”). Groups of 12 guinea pigs sensitized to ovalbumin were fed over five days with either EPO or BO (100mg/kg/day or 1 g/kg/day) prior to sequential allergen inhalation challenges (time 0′, 10′, 20′, 60′, 70′ and 80′). Bronchial obstruction was measured by whole body plethysmography. 100 mg/kg EPO did not alter the bronchial reactions of the animals; 100 mg and 1 g/…

ChemInform Abstract: X-Ray Powder Structure Determination and Thermal Behavior of a New Modification of Pb(II) Selenite.

2010

The crystal structure of a new polymorphic form of lead(II) selenite (PbSeO3) was solved directly from conventional X-ray powder diffraction data. Direct methods and Rietveld refinement techniques were used for the structure determination. The compound crystallizes in the monoclinic space group P21/c (no. 14) with cell dimensions a = 9.1587(1) A, b = 8.0902(1) A, c = 8.7932(1) A, β = 103.032(1)°, and V = 634.76(2) A3. The final refinement gave background excluded Rp = 6.22%, Rwp = 8.81%, and RB = 2.16% by using 45 structural and 15 profile parameters with 10 atoms in an asymmetric unit. The three-dimensional structure consists of 9-coordinated lead atoms, which are linked by three bidentate…

Spatial inhomogeneities and defect structures in CIGS and CIS materials: An ab-initio based Monte Carlo study

2011

The chalcopyrite semiconductors CuIn 1−x Ga x Se 2 (CIGS) and CuInSe 2 (CIS) are excellent materials for high efficiency and low cost thin-film solar cells. This is due to the effective absorption of the solar spectrum and the inherent resilience to defects and composition fluctuations. Although the CIGS and CIS material in solar cells is highly inhomogeneous and exhibits a lot of different defects, the cell efficiencies are exceptionally high. If single crystalline absorbers are used, efficiencies are lower. Therefore, studying spatial inhomogeneities and defect structures is of great importance for understanding what supports and what diminishes the efficiency and robustness of the cells.…

Transport measurements under pressure in III–IV layered semiconductors

2007

PACS 61.50.Ks, 62.50.+p, 72.15.Jf, 72.80.Jc This paper reports on Hall effect, resistivity and thermopower effect measurements under high pressure up to 12 GPa in p-type γ-indium selenide (InSe) and e-gallium selenide (GaSe). The paper focuses on two applications of transport measurements under pressure: electronic structure and phase transition studies. As concerns the electronic structure, we investigate the origin of the striking differences between the pressure behaviour of transport parameters in both layered compounds. While the hole concentration and mobility increase moderately and monotonously in e-GaSe up to 10 GPa, a large increase of the hole concentration at near 0.8 GPa and a …

The (Meta)politics of Thinking

2021

In this chapter, Jussi Backman approaches Hannah Arendt’s readings of ancient philosophy by setting out from her perspective on the intellectual, political, and moral crisis characterizing Western societies in the twentieth century, a crisis to which the rise of totalitarianism bears witness. To Arendt, the political catastrophes haunting the twentieth century have roots in a tradition of political philosophy reaching back to the Greek beginnings of philosophy. Two principal features of Arendt’s exchange with the ancients are highlighted. The first is her account, in The Human Condition (1958), of the profound transformation of the Greek perceptions of political life initiated by Plato, the…
