1985
A study fon the allince Jasionion foliosae (Asplenietea rupestria) is made in several chorological sectors of the Iberian Peninsula. Six associations are described, of which, three of them are propossed as new: Antirrhino pulverulenti-Rhamnetum pumili, Sileno horyii-Saxifragetum cuneatae and Antirrhino granitici-Rhamnetum pumili. mateo@uv.es

Lawrence Kelso Frank's Proto Ayresian Dichotomy: A Note
2003
This paper explores Lawrence Kelso Frank's contribution to the evolution of the so called Veblenian dichotomy. According to this apprach, peculiar to the institutional framework of every economic system is an absolute and irreconcilable tension between the dynamic and progressive force of technology on the one side, and the static and conservative structure of ceremony and institutions on the other. The first section examines Frank's adoption of behavioristic psychology in connection with the main changes which were taking place in the American social sciences during the first decades of the twentieth century. The second section describes Frank's theory of institutional change, emphasizing …
Effectiveness of microwave based digestion procedures for the demineralization of human milk and infant formulas prior to fluorometric determination …
1996
The use of two types of microwave oven, one domestic (A) and the other specially designed for laboratory (B) for microwave-based digestion, to destroy the organic matter in milk and infant formulas prior to fluorometric determination of selenium is studied in order to check their applicability and reliability. In both systems the best results were obtained using the acid mixture HNO3—H2O2, and additional treatment with perchloric acid (60%) in a Thermoblock. The application of two different microwave-based digestion procedures to infant formulas was free of interferences. In the case of human milk, it was necessary to use the standard addition method. Values obtained for detection and quant…
Selenium status during pregnancy: Influential factors and effects on neuropsychological development among Spanish infants
2017
Selenium(Se) has been positively associated with neurodevelopment in early life. However, its margin of safety is rather narrow, and few prospective studies have evaluated its potential neurotoxic effects at intermediate levels. We aimed to explore the association between maternal Se concentrations and child neuropsychological development, including the genetic effect modification of the Se metabolizing gene INMT. Study subjects were 650 mother-child pairs from the Spanish Childhood and Environment Project (INMA, 2003-2005). Infant neuropsychological development was assessed around 12 months of age by the Bayley Scales of Infant Development. Sociodemographic and dietary characteristics were…
Fever of Unclear Origin and Cytopenia Because of Acute Splenic Sequestration in a Young Immunocompetent Carrier of Beta-Globin Mutation for Hb Vallet…
2008
Fever of unclear origin is a clinical challenge in medical practice. Infectious diseases, neoplasms, and collagen vascular illnesses are its main causes in adults and children. Acute splenic sequestration crises, a known potentially fatal complication of sickle cell disease and sickle beta-thalassemia, are uncommon in beta-heterozygosis. We describe a case of prolonged recurrent episodes of fever with spontaneous resolution, commencing at age 10 in a 15-year-old boy with a history of hypochromic microcytic anemia attributed to a thalassemic trait. He was admitted twice to our university hospital for continuous-remittent fever with a pruritic, macular evanescent Still's skin rash, severe spl…
Splenectomy influences bone marrow infiltration in patients with splenic marginal zone cell lymphoma with or without villous lymphocytes.
2001
BACKGROUND Splenic marginal zone cell lymphoma (SMZL) is a low grade B-cell lymphoma in which patients can have circulating villous lymphocytes and can show a peculiar intrasinusoidal bone marrow (BM) infiltration. Splenectomy is the reported treatment of choice for these patients. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of splenectomy on patients with BM lymphomatous infiltration. METHODS BM biopsies of 16 patients with SMZL were studied morphologically and immunohistochemically. In 12 patients, BM biopsies were taken before and after splenectomy. Four patients did not undergo splenectomy, and their BM biopsies were performed with an approximately 1 year interval. RESULTS B…
Immunophenotypic profile and role of adhesion molecules in splenic marginal zone lymphoma with bone marrow involvement
2005
Abstract Splenic Marginal Zone Lymphoma (SMZL), with or without villous lymphocytes (VL+/-), is a low-grade lymphoproliferative disorder with constant involvement of the bone marrow (BM). Different BM infiltration patterns, mainly intra-sinusoidal, interstitial and nodular, have been described. Adhesion molecules (AMs) constitute a heterogeneous group of antigenic receptors playing a major role in leukocyte recruitment, in lymphocyte homing and in cellular-mediated immune response. Evolution and pattern of the BM infiltrate could be influenced by a variable expression of AM on SMZL lymphocytes. The degree and pattern of BM infiltration and the immunohistochemical expression of AM (H-CAM, BL…
Splenic marginal zone lymphoma with or without villous lymphocytes
2004
BACKGROUND Splenic marginal zone lymphoma (SMZL) is a well defined pathologic entity. However, questions regarding the bone marrow infiltration rate, the minimal diagnostic data set, and therapy remain unanswered. METHODS Clinical-pathologic features and outcomes of 57 consecutive patients who had splenomegaly with no clinically significant lymphadenomegaly and who were diagnosed with SMZL with or without (±) villous lymphocytes (VL) were reviewed. RESULTS SMVL ± VL occurred mostly in elderly males (median age, 62 years ± 10 years; male-to-female ratio, (1.85). Anemia was recorded in 49% of patients, and 30% of patients had moderate thrombocytopenia. Leukocytosis and leukopenia were found i…
