The studies of Sicilian ancient landscapes, the histories of sites, towns and marks of antiquity, have necessarily to trace back to Tommaso Fazello’s book. Before him, nobody else had offered such a detailed depiction of ancient Sicily, and the methodology of his research is still very authentic. In addition to describing the ruins of ancient cities and identifying them (Selinunte is for instance a very special case), one could affirm that Fazello’s interest was also in the natural characterization and transformation of both rural and urban landscapes. La chiesa di San Giovanni Battista a Collesano (Palermo), attestata fin dal 1439, è crollata nel marzo 1932. Recentemente nel sito sono stati rinvenuti numerosi elementi architettonici quali capitelli, colonne, archi e altre parti intagliate, la cui analisi, assieme al rilievo dei pochi brani murari ancora in piedi, ha permesso di ricostruire la configurazione spaziale dell’edificio. La chiesa aveva un singolare impianto a due navate con un tetto in legno poggiante su mensole intagliate, realizzato nel 1588 dagli intagliatori Andrea Migliore, Giuseppe e Jacobo Mangio, mentre il cappellone sul fondo della navata maggiore era coperto da una volta a crociera. This paper describes the results of a landscape archaeological research, focused on the ancient territory of Alesa, city of Hellenistic and Roman period located near the North coast of Sicily. The aim of the research is to analyze the problems of settlement and rural population of Alesa hinterland, and also to detect human activities and to perceive settlement strategies and resource exploitation tactics by the local communities in a long-term perspective (from prehistory to late-roman/early byzantine periods). The aim of this paper is – from a comparative point of viewand to make an analitical and critical review of the archaeological surveys carried out by the University of Palermo in the hinterland of Alesa and Thermae Himeraeae (Northern Sicily) during the Roman period. The research is focused on: identifying the geographical and morphological characters, and the resources of the territory in Antiquity; analysing the distribution of the settlements in the Roman Age, connected to the resources and to the various aspects of the landscape.

“The drops which fell from Shakespear’s Pen”: Hamlet in Contemporary Fiction

Questions of gender, ethnicity and sexuality have all been raised by novelists intent on rewriting Shakespeare from the position of what have been seen as cultural margins. While discussions of such rewritings are ongoing, few concerted efforts have been made to trace a pattern in the treatment of Shakespearean allusion and adaptation at the hands of British and American writers of the literary mainstream. The present essay sets out to investigate the way in which three such writers —Ian McEwan, Graham Swift, and John Updike— employ allusion to/adaptations of Hamlet in their novels and what their respective stances reveal about their understanding of their role as canonical writers.
