M-commerce - mobile commerce: a new frontier for E-business

2005

Mobile commerce involves the use of mobile computing devices in carrying out different types of economic transactions or enabling them to take place over space and time. The m-commerce includes use of such technologies as SMS services over a number of carriers (GSM, IS95, CDMA, W-CDMA), Bluetooth applications, and the integration of low-level digital carriers to IP based services through WAP or Compact HTML like the Japanese I-Mode service. This integration is one of the fastest growing markets of E-business and it will involve the development and design of a host of new applications, services, business models and technological solutions. The theme is both topical and challenging, as the nu…

An RF Wireless Power Transfer system to power battery-free devices for asset tracking

2019

Internet of Things (IoT) and Wireless Sensor Networks (WSN) infrastructures are becoming more and more available and diffused. One major outcome is the development of new services that help to make everyday life easier and better. One of those to which this paper reserves special attention is asset tracking which refers to the method of tracking physical assets. This service is very well based on IoT infrastructure and, due to the enormous number of objects to be traced, desperately needs the availability of inexpensive tags with sensing capabilities, that can be conveniently monitored from a long distance and require no maintenance. For this, engineers are called to face very challenging i…

A Data-Driven Architecture for Personalized QoE Management in 5G Wireless Networks

2017

With the emergence of a variety of new wireless network types, business types, and QoS in a more autonomic, diverse, and interactive manner, it is envisioned that a new era of personalized services has arrived, which emphasizes users' requirements and service experiences. As a result, users' QoE will become one of the key features in 5G/future networks. In this article, we first review the state of the art of QoE research from several perspectives, including definition, influencing factors, assessment methods, QoE models, and control methods. Then a data-driven architecture for enhancing personalized QoE is proposed for 5G networks. Under this architecture, we specifically propose a two-ste…

Performance evaluation of differentiated access mechanisms effectiveness in 802.11 networks

2005

The IEEE 802.11e draft specification aims to extend the original 802.11 MAC protocol by introducing priority mechanisms able to manage bandwidth and resource allocation according to the QoS needs of real-time applications. Different strategies based on MAC parameter diversifications, such as contention window limits, contention window updating factor and silence monitoring time, can be pursued in order to provide service differentiation, also in the case of distributed access. In this paper, we investigate on the behaviour of each differentiation possibility under different load conditions and traffic requirements. Our results show that the most powerful mechanisms which provide service dif…

Breaking layer 2: A new architecture for programmable wireless interfaces

2012

This paper introduces a new architecture for programmable wireless interfaces, aiming at responding to the emerging request of wireless access flexibility and adaptability. Instead of implementing a specific MAC protocol stack, the proposed architecture supports a set of programmable services, devised to customize the wireless access operations according to specific network and application scenarios. The services are composed by means of simpler functions, which in turns work on system primitives (i.e. elementary non-programmable functionalities, natively provided by the system) dealing with the physical transmission and reception of the frames. Our approach significantly differs from softw…

Context-aware vehicular cyber-physical systems with cloud support: architecture, challenges, and solutions

2014

[EN] The advances in wireless communication techniques, mobile cloud computing, and context-aware technologies boost a growing interest in the design, development, and deployment of vehicular networks for emerging applications. This leads to an increasing evolutionary tendency to change from vehicular networks toward cloud-assisted context-aware vehicular cyber-physical systems. In this article, we first propose a multi-layered context-aware architecture and introduce two crucial service components, vehicular social networks and context-aware vehicular security. Then we propose an application scenario regarding the context-aware dynamic parking services by illuminating the cloud-assisted ar…

Human Factors Affecting the Patient’s Acceptance of Wireless Biomedical Sensors

2008

In monitoring arrhythmia, the quality of medical data from the ECG sensors may be enhanced by being based on everyday life situations. Hence, the development of wireless biomedical sensors is of growing interest, both to diagnose the heart patient, as well as to adjust the regimen. However, human factors such as emotional barriers and stigmatization, may affect the patient’s behavior while wearing the equipment, which in turn may influence quality of data. The study of human factors and patient acceptance is important both in relation to the development of such equipment, as well as in evaluating the quality of data gathered from the individual patient. In this paper, we highlight some impo…

Improvement of a Service Level Negotiation Protocol using Formal Verification

2013

International audience; The goal of the pervasive connectivity is to enable mobile users to be permanently connected to the Internet. Mobile users are often connected to wireless networks and consuming services that require quality of service guarantees. Accessing services using wireless technologies may make the service delivery vulnerable to security attacks because of the open medium of these technologies. In this context, we need to guarantee both quality of service and security for mobile users communications. In this paper, we present a protocol for service level negotiation which covers both quality of service and security and assigns a profile to each user in order to optimize and a…

Network channel allocation and revenue maximization

2002

This paper introduces a model that can be used to share link capacity among customers under different kind of traffic conditions. This model is suitable for different kind of networks like the 4G networks (fast wireless access to wired network) to support connections of given duration that requires a certain quality of service. We study different types of network traffic mixed in a same communication link. A single link is considered as a bottleneck and the goal is to find customer traffic profiles that maximizes the revenue of the link. Presented allocation system accepts every calls and there is not absolute blocking, but the offered data rate/user depends on the network load. Data arriva…
