REM sleep behavior disorder and periodic leg movements in sleep in patients with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis

2013

Introduction In the last few years, it has been increasingly recognized that patients with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) frequently suffer of sleep-related complaints, including insomnia, restless legs syndrome, and daytime sleepiness, although, in the past, many of the nocturnal symptoms have been mainly ascribed to chronic respiratory insufficiency and hypoventilation. In addition, excluding few single cases reported, polysomnographic studies did not look for abnormal motor activity during sleep that could be indicative of Rapid Eye Movements (REM) sleep behavior disorder (RBD) and REM sleep without atonia (RSWA), which are highly prevalent in other neurodegenerative disorders with …

Restless legs syndrome in patients with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis

2010

We aimed to evaluate the frequency and determinants of restless legs syndrome (RLS) in a group of 76 patients with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) and 100 control subjects. A diagnosis of RLS was made according to the criteria of the International RLS Study Group, and severity was assessed by the RLS severity scale. RLS was significantly more frequent in patients with ALS (ALS/RLS(+)) than in control subjects (25% vs. 8%; P = 0.002). Compared with control subjects, patients with ALS/RLS(+) showed shorter history of RLS complaints and higher frequency of symptoms occurrence. Moreover, compared with those without RLS, patients with ALS/RLS(+) showed increased functional impairment and mor…

New-stage discharge relationships for free and submerged sluice gates

2012

Abstract The flow movement through a sluice gate is investigated for both free and submerged flow conditions. For free flow condition, the current dimensionless formula, indicated acceptable accuracy; while for submerged flow condition it was modified especially for low submerged condition. In this regard, Buckingham theorem along with the Incomplete Self-Similarity concept was employed and a new stage–discharge relationship was developed accordingly. Also, to achieve a suitable formula for submerged flow condition being accurate in low submergence, the maximum tailwater depth allowing the free flow condition and head loss factor were identified as missing parameters in the functional dimen…

Data Communication Security of Advanced Metering Infrastructure in Smart Grid

2013

Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) is very critical part for wired/wireless communication in Smart Grid. It involves communication of vital smart metering data to central control center for smooth functioning of smart grid. Security and reliability of data is of paramount importance for operational reliability of smart grid. AMI network is susceptible to many cyber security threats and attacks. Therefore it is desirable to prevent the data from such vulnerabilities. The paper proposes two-phase method to provide security of data using dedicated authentication server which inhibits malicious and unauthorized nodes to gain access to AMI communication network. Secure environment is created…

Wearable PPG Sensor Matrix for Cardiovascular Assessment

2014

Wearable biomonitoring systems and smart textiles for healthcare are gaining more importance and significance in the R&D sphere due to their potentials in healthcare and sports. Such biomonitoring systems offer a number of advantages in comparison to the conventional equipment proving mobility of the wearer during a long-term monitoring of vital parameters. There are different options to set up the physiological monitoring using wireless and wearable technologies. One of the scenarios is addressing textiles as a carrier of electronics. Moreover, those differ by their functional applications, registered physiological parameters and technology solutions. Still, the most demanded biomonitoring…

A new perspective of innovation toward a non-contact society - Amazon's initiative in pioneering growing seamless switching

2022

This paper elucidates the inside of the black box of Amazon's unique research and development (R&D) dynamism that made it the world's top R&D leader by transforming “routine or periodic alterations” into “significant improvement” during the R&D process. This dynamism also succeeded in transforming the COVID-19 pandemic period into a springboard for new innovation, leading to Amazon's notable growth notwithstanding the pandemic. An empirical analysis using a techno-economic approach focusing on Amazon's endeavor to develop a series of advanced digital fashions (ADFs) and online-based luxury brands (neo-luxury) before and during the COVID-19 pandemic was conducted. Amazon became a global appa…

Cumulative-Sum-Based Localization of Sound Events in Low-Cost Wireless Acoustic Sensor Networks

2014

Wireless acoustic sensor networks (WASNs) are known for their potential applications in multiple areas, such as audio-based surveillance, binaural hearing aids or advanced acoustic monitoring. The knowledge of the spatial position of a source of interest is usually a requirement for many of these applications. Therefore, source localization is an important problem to be addressed in WASNs. Unfortunately, most localization algorithms need costly signal processing stages that prevent them from being implemented in low-cost sensor networks, requiring additional modules for signal acquisition and processing. This paper presents a low-complexity method for acoustic event detection and localizati…

Psychoacoustic Annoyance Implementation With Wireless Acoustic Sensor Networks for Monitoring in Smart Cities

2020

Soundscape standard (ISO 12913) is mainly oriented to describe the psychoacoustic annoyance (PA) due to the perceived sound in different environments. The evaluation of this annoyance is commonly based on the Zwicker and Fastl model that defines several components related to this subjective annoyance, such as loudness, sharpness, roughness, and fluctuation strength. But due to their complexity, these components are difficult to be calculated on small board computers (SBCs) in real time in order to enable a wireless acoustic sensor network for PA monitoring. In this article, we describe the necessary procedures to implement the complete psychoacoustic model by Zwicker and Fastl in a precise …

Fading mitigation coding techniques for space to ground free space optical communications (Euro Med Telco 2014)

2014

In this manuscript, a Geostationary satellite-toground Free Space Optics (FSO) downlink channel model has been implemented, which is able to predict temporal irradiance fluctuations caused by scintillation at a wide range of turbulence conditions and for different values of the zenith angle. In order to mitigate fading events that occur in FSO communications, we have also tested the performance of three different families of Rateless Codes (Luby Transform, Raptor and RaptorQ) into our model and found that RaptorQ is the best candidate to mitigate errors in FSO links.
