Effects of pressure and of thermal history on the structural phase transition of KCN

The cubic-noncubic structural phase transition of a KCN single crystal is studied as a function of thermal history and of hydrostatic pressure up to 2 kbar. The standard sequence of phases is cubic-monoclinic-orthorhombic on cooling and orthorhombic-cubic on heating. The monoclinic phase is also absent in first cooling runs at low pressures (p≦250 bar). The width of the monoclinic field inp, T phase diagram is increased in second cooling runs. The effects are discussed in terms of a martensitic transformation behavior and random strain fields.

The ferroelastic cubic-orthorhombic transition of single crystals NaCN and (NaCN)0.98 (KCN)0.02 has been studied by x-ray diffraction. The domain configuration obtained is consistent with the Wechsler, Lieberman, Read-model for martensitic transformations.

3D Metamaterials with Negative Thermal Expansion and Negative Effective Compressibility

Materials with negative thermal expansion are desired for controlling thermal stresses, but unusual in nature. With two-component metamaterials it is possible to tune the thermal expansion from positive over zero to negative values, even if both components have positive thermal expansion. Using gray-tone laser lithography we fabricate three-dimensional two-component polymer microlattices, exhibiting zero or negative thermal expansion [1].

Abstract To examine the role of a community of soil animals in N-mineralization and C fluxes in dead organic matter, we established a microcosm system with substrates composed of: (a) birch leaf litter; (b) raw coniferous humus; and (c) litter on humus. Every 3–4 wks the substrates were irrigated with distilled water, and the amounts of NO5-N, NH4-N, total-N and total-C (as well as humic substances at one recording) in the leachates were analyzed. The article is a report on our own research concerning how spouses who do not take over parental roles assess their family. The study aimed to search for a relationship between evaluating one’s family and life/marital satisfaction and attitudes towards children among spouses who do not undertake parenting. The study was carried out from a developmental perspective. The research group consisted of 76 married persons in their early adulthood. The participants postponed taking on parental roles for a specifi ed time or declared voluntary childlessness.
