Harmless Rapes? A False Problem for the Harm Principle

ENG.: In this article, I try to show that “harmless rape” (i.e., the case of a rape which is not experienced by its victim) poses no real problem for the harm principle. In order to do this, I first give a critical account of the way in which John Gardner and Stephen Shute have faced this very same topic in a pathbreaking essay they wrote about ten years ago. I contend that their argument undergoes some logical and normative flaws. I will then provide a different account of the harm principle, one that, while reflecting more precisely some of the original Millian intuitions, easily explains why socalled harmless rapes should be criminalized. AbstractIn this study, an innovative procedure is presented for the analysis of the static behavior of plates at the micro and nano scale, with arbitrary shape and various boundary conditions. In this regard, the well-known Eringen’s nonlocal elasticity theory is used to appropriately model small length scale effects. The proposed mesh-free procedure, namely the Line Element-Less Method (LEM), only requires the evaluation of simple line integrals along the plate boundary parametric equation. The purpose of this study is to assess the utility value European citizens put on an innovative social program aimed at reducing homelessness. The Housing First (HF) model involves access to regular, scattered, independent and integrated housing in the community with the support of a multidisciplinary team. In Europe, the widespread transition from the Traditional Staircase (TS) model to the Housing First (HF) model is transforming the way social service providers work with people experiencing homelessness. This study examined social service providers’ perspectives in both models regarding factors that facilitate or hinder their work. Data were collected through 17 photovoice projects involving 81 social service providers from eight European countries. The results show factors affecting social service providers’ work at three levels: systemic, organizational, and individual. The design and field test of a novel sensor system based in autonomous wireless sensors to measure the temperature of the heat transfer fluid along a borehole heat exchanger (BHE) is presented. The system, by means of two specials valves, inserts and extracts miniaturized wireless sensors inside the pipes of the borehole, which are carried by the thermal fluid. Each sensor is embedded in a small sphere of just 25 mm diameter and 8 gr weight, containing a transceiver, a microcontroller, a temperature sensor and a power supply. NUMEN aims at accessing experimentally driven information on Nuclear Matrix Elements (NME) involved in the half-life of the neutrinoless double beta decay (0νββ), by high-accuracy measurements of the cross sections of Heavy Ion (HI) induced Double Charge Exchange (DCE) reactions. First evidence about the possibility to get quantitative information about NME from experiments is found for the (18O,18Ne) and (20Ne,20O) reactions. Extension of the line element-less method to dynamic problems

The line element-less method is an efficient approach for the approximate solution of the Laplace or biharmonic equation on a general bidimensional domain. Introducing generalized harmonic polynomials as approximation functions, we extend the line element-less method to the inhomogeneous Helmholtz equation and to the eigenvalue problem for the Helmholtz equation. The obtained approximate solutions are critically discussed and advantages as well as limitations of the approach are pointed out.
