A microbiological, physicochemical, and texture study during storage of yoghurt produced under isostatic pressure

Abstract This work aimed to study refrigeration storage (4 °C for 23 days) of yoghurt produced at 43 °C under sub-lethal high pressure, at 10, 20, 30 and 40 MPa, in comparison with the fermentation process at atmospheric pressure (0.1 MPa). Lactic acid bacteria (S. thermophilus and L. bulgaricus, LAB) and quality parameters like pH, titratable acidity, syneresis and colour were evaluated, along with textural analyses to infer how pressure would impact the obtained yoghurt along storage. Lipid composition of the vacuolar membrane of Acer pseudoplatanus cultured cells

Tonoplast was prepared by osmotic lysis of a pure vacuolar fraction isolated from protoplasts derived from Acer pseudoplatanus cultured cells. After their extraction, neutral and polar lipids were separated by a thin layer chromatography. Phospholipids, glycolipids and neutral lipids represented 44.5%, 39.1% and 16.4% of total lipids, respectively. Sterols (glycosylated plus non-glycosylated forms) constituted 30.8% of total lipids; 75% of sterols were glycosylated. Effects of magnesium deprivation on development and biomineralization in the sea urchin Arbacia lixula

Echinoderms have an extensive endoskeleton composed of magnesian calcite and occluded matrix proteins. As biomineralization in sea urchin larvae is sensitive to the Magnesium:Calcium ratio of seawater, we investigated the effects of magnesium deprivation on development and skeletogenesis in the sea urchin Arbacia lixula. We focused on the localization of the skeletogenic cells (primary mesenchyme cells) and the spatial expression of associated genes. Evaluation of microbiological and physico‐chemical parameters of retail ready‐to‐eat mono‐varietal salads

An integrated microbiological and physico-chemical approach was applied to evaluate the decay of mono-varietal ready-to-eat escarole (Cichorium endivia var. latifolium) and red chicory (Cichorium intybus L. var. foliosum Hegi) during refrigeration. Total mesophilic microorganisms, including pseudomonads, and total psychrotrophic microorganisms were detected at high numbers in all samples just after packaging and at the expiry date. Huanglongbing modifies quality components and flavonoid content of ‘Valencia’ oranges

BACKGROUND: In order to evaluate the effect of citrus greening disease, or Huanglongbing (HLB), on quality components and flavonoid contents of ‘Valencia’ oranges, fruit from non-infected trees (control), from infected trees but symptom-less (asymptomatic) and from infected trees and showing clear HLB symptoms (symptomatic) were harvested in March and in May, 2013. The effect of buffer strip width and selective logging on streamside plant communities

Background Riparian forests surrounding streams host high biodiversity values, but are threatened by clear-cut logging. Narrow buffer strips of about 15 m are commonly left between the stream and the clear-cut, but studies suggest that the buffer width should be at least 30 m to protect riparian plant communities.
