Ritz Solution for Transient Analysis of Variable-Stiffness Shell Structures

2020

The dynamic response of thin-walled structures is driven by mass and stiffness distribution. As such, variable-stiffness (VS) composites offer opportunities to tune structural dynamic responses. To this extent, efficient analysis tools become increasingly important for structural analysis and design purposes. In this work, an efficient and versatile Ritz method for free vibrations and linear transient analysis of VS doubly curved shell structures is presented. VS shell structures are modeled as an assembly of shell-like domains. The shell kinematics is based on the first-order shear deformation theory, and no further assumption is made on the shallowness or on the thinness of the structure.…

Stiffness and Reinforcement Effect of electrical Resistance Strain Gauges

2007

:  The increasing use of low-modulus materials, on which the reinforcement effect of the electrical resistance strain gauge is not negligible, has re-opened the research interest into this issue. This study deals with the evaluation of stiffness, and of the strain gauge Young's modulus involved in the estimation of both the global and the local reinforcement effect; the relationship between the strain gauge stiffness and the local reinforcement effect is also analysed. In particular, the experimental technique used to determine the stiffness of some commercial strain gauges is described. The results show that the strain gauge stiffness alone does not permit an accurate evaluation of the loc…

Effects of internal kinetics and muscle activity during the wide and narrow barbell back squat

2017

Lahti, J. 2017. Effects of internal kinetics and muscle activity during the wide and narrow barbell back squat. Sports biology department, University of Jyväskylä. Master’s thesis. p. 102 (4 attachments). Introduction. The barbell back squat (BBS) is a commonly utilized strength exercise to support general preparedness for the demands in multiple sports. Recently, studies have shown various strength training exercises have the potential to recruit the regions of the hamstrings differently. Specifically, it is unknown if changing stance width under conditions where forward knee movement is restricted engages the hamstring regions differently and how this corresponds with measured 3-D net joi…

2020

This study focused on resolving the differences in economy between two common sit-skiing postures used by disabled athletes, suspected to be the most and least effective. Ten experienced non-disabled male cross-country skiers went through an incremental testing protocol with an ergometer simulating double poling in two sitting postures "kneeing" and "knee-high." The protocol consisted of 3 × 4 min steady-state stages (13, 22, and 34% of maximal sprint power output). Subjects' respiratory gases and heart rate were measured and blood lactate concentrations were determined. In addition, pulling forces and motion capture recordings were collected. Oxygen consumption was 15.5% (p < 0.01) higher …

A new genus of Phaneropterinae (Orthoptera: Ensifera: Tettigoniidae) from Central Africa</stro…

2014

The new genus Pseudoplangia is described for Plangia laminifera Karsch, 1896. Its general aspect is similar to that of the genus Plangia Stal, 1873, but it differs remarkably in the vertex width, in the shape of eyes, that are oval and elongate, in the length of mid femora, that are shorter than pronotum length, in the shape of fore and mid legs that are very much laterally compressed, and in the presence of broad-based spines on the hind tibiae.

Persistence ofYersinia antigens in peripheral blood cells from patients withYersinia enterocolitica O:3 infection with or without reactive arthritis

1998

Objective To assess the persistence of bacterial antigens in peripheral blood cells from patients with Yersinia enterocolitica O:3-triggered reactive arthritis (ReA). Methods Peripheral blood samples were obtained from 20 patients with Y enterocolitica O:3 infection (11 with ReA and 9 without). These samples were studied by immunochemical techniques for the presence of Yersinia antigens at the beginning of infection and up to 4 years thereafter. Synovial fluid samples from 6 of the 11 ReA patients were also studied. Results The Yersinia antigens lipopolysaccharide and heat-shock protein (HSP) were detected in peripheral blood mononuclear cells and polymorphonuclear phagocytes from all patie…

Tarsal coalitions as a cause of pain in the foot of children: Therapeutic options

2021

Background and objective: The tarsal coalition can be a cause of mid-hindfoot pain in older children. The objective is to analyze the types of coalition treated in our hospital from 2010 to 2019 as well as the treatment carried out. Material and method: Observational, descriptive and retrospective study of 18 patients with tarsal coalition, 8 women and 10 men, aged 11.9±2.6 years. Epidemiological data, clinical findings and imaging tests, and treatment performed were collected. Results: Twenty-five feet (38.8% bilateral) were reviewed. The main symptom was pain. Sixty-four percent were associated with flat-valgus foot. Fifty-two percent were located in the calcaneal-scaphoid joint, and 40% …
