The theory of decorum in Cicero’s de officiis (44 BC) seems to suggest to the Romans not simply the fourth virtue of a general system of conduct, but a super-virtue able to act as a “shock absorber” in the exercise of social and political life, summarized in a principle that Cicero defines as verecundiae partes, that is non offendere homines. Thus, while Romans citizens suffer the most radical crisis of their history, he indicates the decorum as the backbone of the complex architecture that constitutes the common good. Seneca’s Consolation to Marcia embraces the orthodox Stoic view that, when unduly protracted, grief reflects a logical misunderstanding of the natural world, human life, and the limits of the self. Seneca is aware that persuading Marcia to leave her false beliefs is the only way to reawaken her interest in communal life, family reciprocity, and constructive memory. He conceives his consolatory writing as an intellectually engaging didactic work tailored to the needs and disposition of his addressee. Questo contributo (ricollegandosi a un precedente saggio del medesimo autore) ribadisce, attraverso l'analisi delle caratteristiche prosodiche e metriche del testo, come il «De Cavichiolo» non possa essere considerato - diversamente da quanto spesso è stato fatto dagli studiosi - una "commedia elegiaca" medievale, del XII o del XIII secolo, bensì un testo umanistico, assai probabilmente dei primi del Quattrocento.

This paper deals with the links between Latin declamation and tragedy through the investigation of some controversiae, focusing on the relationship father-son. The comparison between some declamatories passages (Sen. contr. 1, 4 and Calp. exc. 18) and some Senecan tragic verses (from Thyestes and Phaedra) allows to detect the proximity between the rhetoric practiced in the schools of declamation and Senecan tragic theatre.

Lucretius has often been regarded as one of the fathers of modern science, and also in recent years several studies have explored his influence far beyond a merely literary perspective. In this paper I analyse specifically the importance of the poet's 'eclectic' attitude in physiology from the point of view of his 'Fortleben' in early modern thought.
