This article deals with Wieland’s work as editor of Der Teutsche Merkur, the first successful German journal he had founded, as a famous writer and tireless translator. The focus of the article is on Wieland’s need for confrontation and an exchange of opinions, his concept of cosmopolitanism, his conception of Europe and the Mediterranean, his rejection of any claim to the inviolability of one’s own convictions which were to be defended at all costs and against everyone and everything.

The article compares "Meine freie deutsche Jugend", 2003, of Claudia Rusch and "Lagerfeuer", 2003 of Julia Franck. These two texts are partly autobiographical and tell about the life of many young people in East Germany (DDR). The two authors write of traumatic experiences related to the political situation in the DDR which are still alive even today in united Germany in the memory of many Germans.

This paper examines the close relationships linking the scholars of Europe in the 16th century. The most of the impulses at the time were emanating from Italy, but this paper aims to show that, contrary to what is commonly supposed, the German-speaking areas, on receiving these stimuli, were also enriching them with their own contributions; and these, in their turn, were then received in Italy, and occasionally 403 contributed to generating innovation that seemed to be actually coming from Italy.
