The Roadmap to Finnish Open Science and Research
2015
Finland published its open science roadmap at the end of November 2014. This roadmap is based on the work of the Open Science and Research Initiative (ATT), a cross-administrative initiative established by the Ministry of Education and Culture. The goal of this initiative is to promote open science and availability of information. Exploration of recent developments of open access in the EU shows that Finland is not among the leading countries in the EU. This paper focuses on the practical action plan of this roadmap and describes how the weakest part of Finnish open science, green open access is to be lifted at international top level.
Kotimaiset tieteelliset lehdet, rinnakkaistallennus sekä huomioita SHERPA/RoMEOsta
2017
This report examines the actions taken for promoting the green OA in Finnish scholarly journals and their effects in 2016 and 2017. A Finnish-language form for suggesting publisher policies to SHERPA/RoMEO database was developed. It was linked into instructions for applying the government subsidy of scholarly publishing. Finally, a resolution on archiving was negotiated with the copyright organization responsible for distributing remunerations of a national license based article database (Elektra). Due to these actions, the number of announced self-archiving policies rose from 27 to 53. 24 policies were collected via the Finnish form and sent to SHERPA/RoMEO. In this connection, some shorta…
Original data for article Kotimaiset tieteelliset julkaisusarjat ja avoimuus (Finnish scientific journals and their openness)
2020
Information on openness, green open access and copyrights of Finnish scientific journals ranked on levels 1-3 (Jufo classification). Data consists of 336 journals and their policies on open science, open access and copyrights. Variables include DOAJ and SHERPA status, Open Access, Delayed Open Access, hybrid publishing, writer's fee, information on green open access, OA license, copyright, journal's format and is it included in journal.fi Data has been collected using Julkaisufoorumi (https://www.julkaisufoorumi.fi/en), SHERPA/Romeo (https://v2.sherpa.ac.uk/romeo/) and journals' webpages. Kotimaisten JUFO-tasoilla 1-3 olevien tieteellisten julkaisujen avoimuus-, rinnakaistallennus- ja tekij…
A probabilistic long‐term framework for site‐specific erosion analysis of wind turbine blades: A case study of 31 Dutch sites
2021
Abstract Rain‐induced leading‐edge erosion (LEE) of wind turbine blades (WTBs) is associated with high repair and maintenance costs. The effects of LEE can be triggered in less than 1 to 2 years for some wind turbine sites, whereas it may take several years for others. In addition, the growth of erosion may also differ for different blades and turbines operating at the same site. Hence, LEE is a site‐ and turbine‐specific problem. In this paper, we propose a probabilistic long‐term framework for assessing site‐specific lifetime of a WTB coating system. Case studies are presented for 1.5 and 10 MW wind turbines, where geographic bubble charts for the leading‐edge lifetime and number of repai…
Classroom effect on primary school students’ self-concept in literacy and mathematics
2019
AbstractAccording to the big-fish-little-pond effect (BFLP) model, high individual academic performance in a particular subject is related to high self-concept in that subject, whereas high average classroom performance has a negative effect on self-concept. In the present study, data from Finnish primary school students in grade 3 (504 students), grade 4 (487 students), and grade 6 (365 students) are used to examine whether the assumptions of the BFLP effect model hold already in primary school. Furthermore, we examined gender differences in BFLP effect. The results showed that as expected students’ high performance in literacy and in mathematics was related to high self-concept in the sam…
Academic achievement and self-concept of deaf and hard-of-hearing and hearing students transitioning from the first to second cycle of primary school…
2018
ABSTRACTThis study was done to examine the transition of deaf and hard-of-hearing (DHH) and hearing students from the first cycle (Grade 4) to the second cycle (Grade 5) of primary education in Ethiopia. Academic achievement and self-concept were measured longitudinally with 103 DHH and hearing students. Participants were selected from three different settings (special schools, special classes and regular schools). Self-Description Questionnaire I (Marsh, H. W. 1990. Self-Description Questionnaire – I (SDQ I). Manual. MacArthur, NSW, Australia: University of Western Sydney) was used to measure the children’s self-concept. The results showed a decrease in the academic achievement and academi…
Development of Participation in and Identification With School: Associations With Truancy
2020
This longitudinal study covering two educational transitions examined 1,821 Finnish students’ participation in and identification with school and their associations with students’ academic achievement and truancy. The students were surveyed (a) at the end of primary school, (b) at the beginning of lower secondary school, (c) at the end of lower secondary school, and (d) in the first year of upper secondary education. In alignment with the participation-identification model, higher levels of participation in school activities at the end of primary school predicted higher levels of identification (i.e., feelings of belonging and valuing school) at the end of lower secondary school. This asso…
Reciprocal Relations between Adolescents’ Self-Concepts of Ability and Achievement Emotions in Mathematics and Literacy
2021
This longitudinal study examined cross-lagged relations of self-concepts of ability and achievement emotions (i.e., enjoyment, boredom, anxiety) in two central school subjects (i.e., mathematics and literacy). Adolescents (N = 848) reported their achievement emotions and self-concepts of ability four times during Grades 6 and 7. The pattern of results was different for mathematics and literacy subjects. For mathematics the results of random intercept cross-lagged panel models showed a positive reciprocal relationship between self-concepts of ability and enjoyment and a negative reciprocal relationship between self-concept and anxiety. Lower self-concepts of ability in mathematics also predi…
Motivational predictors of students' participation in out-of-school learning activities and academic attainment in science : An application of the tr…
2018
Abstract Given the shortfall in students studying science, promotion of motivation and engagement in science education is a priority. The current study applied the trans-contextual model to study the motivational predictors of participation in science learning activities in secondary-school students . In a three-wave design, secondary-school students completed measures of perceived autonomy support, autonomous and controlled motivation, social-cognitive beliefs (attitudes, subjective norms, perceived control), intentions, and self-reported participation in out-of-school science learning activities. Five-weeks later, students self-reported their science learning activities. Students' science…
Individuella och lagidrottande idrottsgymnasie-elevers skolframgång
2013
