The role of parents' and teachers' child-related competence beliefs in the development of students' self-concept of ability

2017

Individuals’ perceptions about their abilities, that is, self-concepts of abilities, are crucial determinants of academic achievement and education-related choices. The aims of this research were to examine the role of parents’ and teachers’ beliefs about children’s abilities in students’ self-concept of ability in the domains of literacy and mathematics, and whether the role of parents and teachers is different among boys and girls, and among low- and high-performing students. These questions were examined using three different data sets: the LIGHT study, the Jyväskylä Entrance into Primary School (JEPS) study and the STAIRWAY study. In all three studies, the participants were Finnish. In …

The Role of Adolescents’ and Their Parents’ Temperament Types in Adolescents’ Academic Emotions: A Goodness-of-Fit Approach

2020

Abstract Background Academic emotions (e.g., enjoyment of learning or anxiety) play a significant role in academic performance and educational choices. An important factor explaining academic emotions can be students’ temperament and the goodness-of-fit between their temperament and their social environment, including parents. Objective This study investigated the unique and interactive effects of early adolescents’ and their parents’ temperament types on adolescents’ academic emotions in literacy and mathematics. Method The participants in the study consisted of 690 adolescent–parent dyads. Parents rated their own and their adolescents’ temperaments, and adolescents reported their positive…

Student Engagement and School Burnout in Finnish Lower-Secondary Schools: Latent Profile Analysis

2016

Self-ratings of behavioural engagement, cognitive engagement and school burnout were used in person-centred analyses to identify latent profiles among 2,485 Finnish lower-secondary school students. Three profiles were identified: high-engagement/low-burnout (40.6% of the sample), average-engagement/average-burnout (53.9%), and low-engagement/high-burnout (5.5%). Another sample of lower-secondary school students was used to validate the 3 profiles. The factors most strongly associated with the high-engagement/low-burnout profile of lower-secondary school students’ were high levels of support from teachers and family, good academic performance, and lack of truancy. The study indicated that te…

Teachers' physiological and self-reported stress, teaching practices and students' learning outcomes in Grade 1.

2022

Background Teachers' self-reported stress is related to the quality of teacher–student interactions and students' learning outcomes. However, it is unclear if teachers' physiological stress is related to child-centred teaching practices in the classroom and whether teaching practices mediate the link between teachers' stress and students' learning outcomes. Aims We studied the effect of teachers' physiological stress and self-reported stress on their teaching practices and thereby on students' learning outcomes in math. Sample A total of 53 classroom teachers and 866 Grade 1 students participated in the study. Methods Salivary cortisol in the middle of the school day and cortisol slope from…

Insights into Finnish first-year pre-service teachers’ twenty-first century skills

2016

This study focuses on Finnish pre-service teachers’ perceptions of their twenty-first century skills, especially their learning strategies, collaboration and teamwork, as well as knowledge and attitudes related to ICT in education. The target group consist of 263 first-year pre-service teachers from three universities. The results outline how pre-service teachers perceive their twenty-first century skills, the relationships between different areas of these skills, and the differences among pre-service teachers in terms of perceived skills. The results indicate that the pre-service teachers perceive themselves as skilled learners in terms of learning strategies used as well as collaboration …

Institutional Learning in North–South Partnerships: Critical Self-Reflection on Collaboration Between Finnish and Tanzanian Academics

2020

Knowledge production and its possibilities and pitfalls in North-South research partnerships have gained increasing attention. The previous literature has identified certain pervasive challenges, and suggested a variety of ways to change partnerships, ranging from improvement of current collaboration activities to fundamental transformation of the hegemonic Eurocentric criteria for knowledge. Against this backdrop, we ask what kinds of learning can take place in research partnerships. We draw from two sources – an institutional approach and a classical categorization of learning proposed by Gregory Bateson – to develop a heuristic for analyzing institutional learning in North-South research…

Principal self-efficacy and school climate as antecedents of collective teacher efficacy

2023

The importance of collective teacher efficacy (CTE) has been increasingly emphasised, but few studies have focused on how it can be enhanced. Since CTE is assumed to be related to factors that differ between schools, the belief-shaping sources of CTE could be related to principals’ beliefs of their efficacy. Moreover, a school climate that centralises teachers’ attempts to improve student learning could enhance CTE. This paper examines a proposed analytical model that links principal self-efficacy (PSE) to CTE, as mediated by the school climate. The model is tested via a multilevel analysis with data from 70 Finnish schools and 767 educators. The analysis revealed that PSE is partially and …

Self-direction

2020

Self-direction refers to an individual’s responsibility and active role in relation to their own activities. It has largely been considered from the perspective of the individual, with self-direction being seen as a characteristic of the person, a linear process, or a feature influenced by the factors surrounding the individual. It is understood as a positive activity that promotes creativity and learning. However, the possibilities for self-direction have been less explored. The theme of self-direction and its possibilities comprise a topical and important perspective in the research on self-direction. peerReviewed

Self-Directed Learning as a Practice of Workplace Learning: Interpretative Repertoires of Self-Directed Learning in ICT Work

2019

Changing technologies and competition in the field of information and communication technology (ICT) are challenging the learning of individual workers and teams alongside and through work. Organisations call for employees’ autonomy and self-directedness executed by agile operations and low hierarchies, where learning is also increasingly the responsibility of the individuals and teams themselves and occurs in practice without strong control of the organisation. Therefore, the multidimensional concept of self-directed learning becomes essential in the context of learning at work. In this study, we examine how employees in the ICT sector describe self-directed learning practices in the conte…

Golfia erityisryhmille - laadullinen tapaustutkimus nuorille suunnatusta golfkurssista

2011

Tutkimuksessa toteutettiin golfkurssi, jonka tarkoituksena oli selvittää laadullisia tutki-musmenetelmiä käyttäen, mitkä seikat muodostuvat keskeisiksi opetettaessa golfia ryh-mälle, jossa oppilailla on oppimisen vaikeuksia. Havaintojen perusteella arvioitiin myös golfin soveltuvuutta erityisryhmien liikuntamuodoksi. Erityisryhmien golfin opettami-seen liittyvä tutkimus on hyvin vähäistä, joten uuden tiedon saaminen on tärkeää pyrit-täessä madaltamaan kynnystä opettaa erityisryhmiä ja pyrittäessä takaamaan kaikille ihmisille tasapuoliset mahdollisuudet osallistua liikuntaan. Toimin tutkimuksessa tutkija-opettajana, ja opetettavat koostuivat kahdesta neljän hen-gen ryhmästä. Osallistujat oli…
