Performance of the ALICE experiment at the CERN LHC
2014
ALICE is the heavy-ion experiment at the CERN Large Hadron Collider. The experiment continuously took data during the first physics campaign of the machine from fall 2009 until early 2013, using proton and lead-ion beams. In this paper we describe the running environment and the data handling procedures, and discuss the performance of the ALICE detectors and analysis methods for various physics observables.
Schelling, esotericism and the meaning of life
2019
F.W.J. Schelling argues in his middle period work Philosophical Inquiries into the Nature of Human Freedom that will should be understood as the most fundamental constitutive element of reality. Though it is often downplayed in recent scholarship, Schelling derived his most central ideas for this work more or less directly from the theosophy of Jacob Boehme. I will argue that far from peripheral and antiquated curiosity, Schelling´s esoteric influences constitute the very foundation of his middle period thought. Schelling´s affinity to esotericism enabled him to develop a form of pantheism, which is not tied to the familiar problematic aspects of traditional Christian and post-Christian nar…
Study of Long-Lived particles beyond the Standard Model at LHCb
2022
Long-lived particles are predicted in many extensions of the Standard Model but the experimental detection is very challenging because they decay out of the first trackers and usually scape to the trigger decisions. In this work we review several new physics models and summarize the experimental status concerning the related searches. We revise the capabilities of the high level trigger system of the LHCb experiment and evaluate the effect of the trigger to detect long-lived particles for two models: a previous work where Dark Higgs Model is assumed, and another one studied for first time in this work, the Composite Higgs involving light scalars signatures. A Montecarlo study about the deca…
Supersymmetry searches in ATLAS at the LHC
2017
Precision measurements in boosted top quarks in the ATLAS detector
2022
Testing for Lynch Syndrome in Endometrial Carcinoma: From Universal to Age-Selective MLH1 Methylation Analysis
2022
Simple Summary International guidelines recommend universal screening of endometrial carcinoma patients for Lynch syndrome, a hereditary cancer predisposition syndrome. Screening is based on mismatch repair protein immunohistochemistry and reflex MLH1 methylation analysis to exclude the likely sporadic cases of MMR deficiency. As sporadic MLH1 protein loss is common in endometrial carcinoma, the ability to target methylation testing would save efforts and costs. We discovered that limiting methylation testing to patients under 65 years would have significantly reduced the testing effort while maintaining a low false negative rate for MLH1-LS detection (0% and 3% in our clinic and registry-b…

Plant Specialized Metabolites in Hazelnut (Corylus avellana) Kernel and Byproducts: An Update on Chemistry, Biological Activity, and Analytical Aspec…
2019
Abstract Corylus avellana (hazelnut) is one of the most popular tree nuts on a worldwide basis. The main products of C. avellana are kernels, a nutritious food, with a high content of healthy lipids, contained in a hard shell. In recent years, along with the ongoing research carried out on hazelnut kernels, a growing interest has been addressed to the hazelnut byproducts including hazelnut skin, hazelnut hard shell, and hazelnut green leafy cover as well as hazelnut tree leaf. These byproducts deriving from the roasting, cracking, shelling/hulling, and harvesting processes have been found as a source of “phytochemicals” with biological activity. The aim of this review is to provide a compre…
