Lysosome-like particles in Geotrichum candidum : A cytochemical study

1971

Lysosome-like particles were localized in Geotrichum candidum by means of the technique for the detection of acid phosphatase of PEARSE and staining with the vital dyes Brilliant cresyl blue and Neutral red. Pretreatments of the cells with procedures injuring the lysosome membrane resulted in shortening of the incubation time (2 min instead of 30 min). After exposure to 1% Triton X-100 the cells showed uniform strong staining due to the release of the enzyme into the cytoplasm.

Light induces expression of a dehydrin-encoding gene during seedling de-etiolation in sunflower (Helianthus annus L.)

2007

The effects of light quality on the expression of a sunflower dehydrin-encoding gene, HaDhn1, were studied during seedling de-etiolation. Seeds were germinated in the dark and, after 5 days, seedlings were maintained well watered and de-etiolated under different lights for 3, 6, 12, and 24h. Exposure to white light stimulated HaDhn1 transcript accumulation in the cotyledons of these seedlings, contrary to seedlings grown in the dark. HaDhn1 transcripts increased also treating plantlets with monochromatic lights, especially red light. The increase of HaDhn1 transcripts is provoked by the formation of the active form of phytochrome. Further experiments, performed saturating active phytochrome…

Does Arsenic Contamination Affect DNA Methylation Patterns in a Wild Bird Population? : An Experimental Approach

2021

Pollutants, such as toxic metals, negatively influence organismal health and performance, even leading to population collapses. Studies in model organisms have shown that epigenetic marks, such as DNA methylation, can be modulated by various environmental factors, including pollutants, influencing gene expression, and various organismal traits. Yet experimental data on the effects of pollution on DNA methylation from wild animal populations are largely lacking. We here experimentally investigated for the first time the effects of early-life exposure to environmentally relevant levels of a key pollutant, arsenic (As), on genome-wide DNA methylation in a wild bird population. We experimentall…

Kokemuksia kokonaisuudesta : tutkielma kehollisuuden ja maailmankatsomuksen suhteesta buenosairesilaisten joogaavien katolisten keskuudessa

2010

Adults learning Finnish as a foreign language : role of support, emotions and reasons connected with learning

2015

The purpose of this research study was to examine adults learning Finnish as a foreign language while striving to understand the reasons behind their decisions to do so, the support that was individually offered to the participants, how they felt throughout the learning process, and whether or not they found themselves to be self-reliant learners, as per Knowles’ andragogy theory. This study set out to examine adult language learners participating in the language and integration program at Palapeli2 project and in the Suomi 2 language course at the Open University. Through a two part (in the beginning and completion of the course) qualitative interview process, a total of eight learners wer…

Optimization of Spray-Drying Process of

2019

Jerusalem artichoke is an important natural matrix for inulin production. In this experiment, response surface methodology (RSM) was employed to optimize the spray-drying parameters in order to determine the maximal inulin yield. For this study, three independent variables (heating temperature (Tª, 110–120 °C), creep speed (V, 18–22 rpm) and pressure (P, 0.02–0.04 MPa)) were used in the experimental design. Using the Box–Behnken design, the optimal parameters obtained were: drying temperature 114.6 °C, creep speed 20.02 rpm, and pressure: 0.03 MPa. The inulin yield, water content and particle size of inulin obtained by spray-drying and freeze-drying were compared. In this regard, the spray-…
