Transnational Social Fields

This chapter excavates Bourdieu’s theoretical insights concerning political sociology to develop a theory of transnational structuration processes. The early Bourdieu implicitly imagined the state as a nationally bounded actor. Only later in his career did he begin to grapple with issues such as globalization, transnationalism, and neoliberalism; and it is this later germ of ideas that this chapter develops. Transnational social fields, this chapter argues, are not reducible to institutional or organizational structures. They require a more holistic analysis of institutions and their underpinnings. This two-part article reviews how the UK authorities have fared in the practical application of Directive 2004/38/EC in the five years since it entered into force. It identifies and examines the most common problems faced by EU citizens when seeking to have their rights recognised by the UK authorities applying the Immigration (European Economic Area) Regulations 2006 by reference to questions and complaints received by Your Europe Advice. In examining the experience of EU citizens and their family members living in the UK, account is taken of a number of recent judgments of the European Court of Justice concerning EU citizenship, including Metock, Lassal, Eman & Sevinger and Ruiz Zambrano.…
When trade unions succeed: Cases of blocked liberalisation in the common market

Despite the generally accepted weakness of trade unions at the European Union level, an analysis of two high profile cases - the Services Directive and the Port Directive - shows that trade unions are able to mobilise effectively at the European level and, within constellations of actors, crucially impact EU decision making. In contrast to common claims that a lack of access to EU institutions makes such groups powerless, it is argued here that the exclusion of large opposing societal groups from consultations is neither a quick nor a sure fire recipe for dismantling opposition.On the contrary,it politicises the process and may lead to opposing groups mobilising in more contentious ways.

This research work adresses the prediction of success after a training scheme (success in university examination, integration of job seekers after a training session) on the basis of 1/ subjective indicators at the end of training: satisfaction or subjective learning and 2/ individuals' variables (self-efficacy, locus of control, self-esteem, optimism and core self-evaluation). Our results show that, compared to training evaluation models, subjective indicators at the end of training do not appear to be good predictors of success. Tässä puheviestinnän pro gradu -tutkielmassa tarkasteltiin yhteiskunnallista aktiivisuutta kuntapoliittisessa Facebook-ryhmässä. Tutkielman tavoitteena oli kuvata ja ymmärtää ajankohtaisen ja aktiivisen kansalaisosallistumisen teknologisen muodon, kuntapoliittisen Facebook-ryhmän vuorovaikutuksen ominaispiirteitä. Tavoitteeseen pyrittiin kysymällä kuntapoliittisen Facebook-ryhmän jäseniltä, minkä takia vuorovaikutukseen osallistutaan ja miten.
