Risk Accelerators in Disasters
2014
Published version of a chapter in the book: Advanced Information Systems Engineering. Also available from the publisher at: http://dx.doi.org/10.1007/978-3-319-07881-6_2 Modern societies are increasingly threatened by disasters that require rapid response through ad-hoc collaboration among a variety of actors and organizations. The complexity within and across today's societal, economic and environmental systems defies accurate predictions and assessments of damages, humanitarian needs, and the impact of aid. Yet, decision-makers need to plan, manage and execute aid response under conditions of high uncertainty while being prepared for further disruptions and failures. This paper argues tha…
<title>Webometrics: Can we measure the Internet?</title>
2004
This paper refers issues connected with webometrics -- science, which allow conducting various researches over model and content of the Internet, especially WWW sites. Webometrics methodology connections with other disciplines and numerous examples of various, sometimes completely different Internet measures were shown. This paper presents the state of the art in webometrics.© (2004) COPYRIGHT SPIE--The International Society for Optical Engineering. Downloading of the abstract is permitted for personal use only.
Impact of molecule-based magnetic materials: A critical outlook
2009
Abstract A critical outlook of the field of molecular magnetic materials is presented. This article is inspired by an international symposium devoted to the “ Design, Characterization and Modelling of Molecule-Based Magnetic Materials (DCM4-II)” that took place at Strasbourg (France), from May 28th to June 1st, within the E-MRS 2007 Spring Meeting (Symposium R) organized by the European Materials Research Society in collaboration with the European Science Foundation . A series of papers linked to this symposium are published in this issue and in the previous issue (Volume 11, Issue 4) of Solid State Sciences.
Graduate of Riga Polytechnic Institute, Engineer, Inventor and Athlete Arno Līcis
2019
The article summarizes the career of a graduate of the Faculty of Mechanics (1964) of Riga Polytechnic Institute Arno Līcis. The article reveals and describes his work while being an engineer at the Riga Electromachine Building Factory (RER), at the Latvian Scientific Research Institute of Trauma- tology and Orthopaedics (LSRITO) and in the printing house «Jāņa sēta», as well as being an inventor. It has been discovered that he had promoted orienteering sports and had significant achievements in competitions of various scale, inclu- ding mass competition named «Magnēts» managed by him, which had been taking place since 1969. This is the first research on the life and professional activities…
Fault diagnosis and modeling of the liquids packaging process. A research based on Petri Nets
2008
Searching for solutions to manufacture industries, which every day deal with problems of faults in their process, that generate economics and humans main losses, an algorithm to construct a Petri Nets based model and diagnoser to isolate and fault detection of discrete events systems is presented. This algorithm is developed in a real process of liquids packaging, where we can see that its implementation allows detecting individuals, simultaneous and dependents faults. The process to construct the model and diagnoser is systematic and useful, and it reduces the problems of combinational explosion, which is the main problem present in other investigations. This research has an excellent proj…
Curcumin entrapped into lipid nanosystems inhibits neuroblastoma cancer cell growth and activates Hsp70 protein
2010
Curcumin is a natural anti-cancer compound utilized on a wide variety of human cancer cell lines and animal carcinogenesis models. However, its clinical application has been limited for its minimal systemic bioavailability. Nanoparticle-based drug delivery approaches have the potential for rendering hydrophobic molecules such as curcumin dispersible in aqueous media, thus overtaking the limits of its poor solubility. In this paper, we reported the preparation and chemical-physical characterization of Nanostructured Lipid Carriers (NLC) containing curcumin, based on Imwitor, Compritol or Precirol as lipid matrix. By in vitro experiments, we have demonstrated that these nano-systems are able …

Introductory notes for the Acta IMEKO Special Issue on the 24th IMEKO Technical Committee 4 International Symposium and the 22nd International Worksh…
2021
Measurement has always been a tool by which we can observe the world around us. This concept was once again confirmed during the 24th IMEKO Technical Committee 4 (TC4) International Symposium, which showed how topics related to the world of measurement range across many fields of knowledge. The IMEKO TC4 International Symposium is one of the most important events in the fields concerned with the theoretical and practical aspects of the measurement of electrical quantities and related instrumentation. It involves institutions and academia in a discussion of the state of the art and issues that require a joint approach by engineers, academics and other experts of measurement, instrumentation,…

Developing business advantages from the technological possibilities of enterprise information systems
2022
Published version of an article in the journal: International journal of information systems and project management. Also available from the publisher at: http://dx.doi.org/10.12821/ijispm020203 Open Access Organizations are increasingly implementing Enterprise Information Systems (EIS), and Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) systems in particular. Despite the notable studies on the advantages of an EIS, many organizations are not satisfied with the benefits or advantages gained. At the same time, it is assumed that such systems with increasing innovations and technological enhancements would generate abundant business advantages, if organizations exploited these opportunities. The investig…
