2017

This paper seeks to analyse economy of a well-to-do peasant family settled in the urban fringes of the city of Valencia, capital of the kingdom, in the first half of fifteenth Century. The death of the head of the family, due to the plague, made emerge the solidarity of the relatives, who took care of the orphans. Thanks to the memorial of rents we can assess the economic strategies of a wealthier peasant family, the importance of markets and the city and countryside relations.

Orphaned siblings and noble families in baroque Rome

2010

The essay investigates the impact of the premature death of the father on brother and sister groups in noble Roman families of the seventeenth century. More specifically, it explores how this loss reflected on the biographical itineraries of individual members of the sibling unit; how adelphic relations between the orphans were reformulated according to order of birth and first born or cadet status, age, and sex; and what forms of solidarity and competition were engendered by the loss of a father. Since demographic historians have shown that orphanage at an early age is an important variable, the author argues that it cannot be overlooked – as historians have done so far – in studies on fam…

El Groupe Français d´Éducation Nouvelle y la Guerra Civil española en las revistas Pour l´Ère Nouvelle y L´Éducateur Prolétarien

2017

The Groupe Français d’Éducation Nouvelle (G.F.E.N.) was a fundamental point of reference for the New Education movement in Europe, represented in the interwar period by the International League for New Education. It was a diverse group, both in its composition and its ideological and pedagogical guidance, especially from 1936 with the arrival of Celestin Freinet and his co-workers from the Coopérative d’Enseignement laic. Through its magazine, Pour l’Ère Nouvelle, which was founded by Adolphe Ferrière and published regularly between January 1922 and March 1940, this movement had a significant influence on educational reformers throughout those two decades. The same is true for the magazine …

2013

In Valencia, in the year 1380, the death of a child aged six unleashes hatred and fear. A Jewish man is accused of throwing a stone at him from his window. The Criminal Justice immediately opens a suit against him and, with amazing speed, pronounces sentence in less than three months. The prosecution, the defence and the witnesses provide a short but splendid picture of the lives of subordinate people in the lower classes, a picture that speaks of values, sociability and solidarity, unsteady roots and the always delicate relationship between Jews and Christians.[ca] La mort d’un nen de sis anys, a la València de 1380, desferma odis i temors.

Food community networks as leverage for social embeddedness

2013

Social embeddedness, defined as the interaction of economic activities and social behavior, is used in this study as a conceptual tool to describe the growing phenomenon of food community networks (FCNs). The aim in this paper was to map the system of relations which the FCNs develop both inside and outside the network and, from the number of relations, it was inferred the influence of each FCN upon the formation of new socially embedded economic realities. A particular form of FCN was taken under consideration: solidarity purchase groups (SPGs). Performed with the aid of social network analysis on a sample of SPGs in Sicily (a region in southern Italy), the study allowed us to identify a r…

2008

The paper deals with the ways to promote the third generation human rights through education. It underlines the evolutionary dynamism of human rights and the necessity to promote a culture based on their recognition. Solidarity is analysed as the value which specify this generation of rights. Then the author defends the rights to a healthy environment, to peoples’ development, and to peace, as key components of any international political community or local communities aiming to meet the requirements of human dignity. Finally, he proposes some pedagogical practices to help the students to become conscious and responsible citizens, so they have the competence to ask to individuals and groups…

Don't Fence Me In: Barricade Sociality and Political Struggles in Mexico and Latvia

2019

AbstractIn 1991, barricades in the streets of Rīga, Latvia, shielded important landmarks from Soviet military units looking to prevent the dissolution of the USSR; in 2006, barricades in the streets of Oaxaca, Mexico, defended members of the Popular Assembly of the Peoples of Oaxaca from paramilitary incursions. We employ these two cases to compare the historically specific public socialities and politics formed through spatial and material practices in moments of crisis and in their aftermath. We show how the barricades continue to animate social and political formations and imaginaries, providing a sense of both past solidarity and future possibilities against which the present, including…

Mežsaimniecībā izmantojamo ievalku plānošanas risinājumi

2018

Studies on mineral dust using airborne lidar, ground-based remote sensing, and in situ instrumentation

2018

In August 2015, the AER-D campaign made use of the FAAM research aircraft based in Cape Verde, and targeted mineral dust. First results will be shown here. The campaign had multiple objectives: (1) lidar dust mapping for the validation of satellite and model products; (2) validation of sunphotometer remote sensing with airborne measurements; (3) coordinated measurements with the CATS lidar on the ISS; (4) radiative closure studies; and (5) the validation of a new model of dustsonde.
