Cyromazine, an insect growth regulator, affects larval and pupal cuticles in dipterans and some other insects. The mode of action of this aminotriazine is not known yet, though it has been shown not to inhibit the synthesis of chitin and cuticular proteins. Cyromazine may, however, act on some step(s) of sclerotization of the cuticle. In the present study, we have analyzed the key enzyme for the production of sclerotization agents, phenylalanine hydroxylase (PAH), using the enzyme from Drosophila, a cyromazine-sensitive insect. Chemically functionalized surfaces are studied for a wide range of applications going from medicine to electronics. Whereas non-magnetic surfaces have been widely studied, functionalization of magnetic surfaces is much less common and has almost never been used for spintronics applications. In this article we present the functionalization of La2/3Sr1/3MnO3, a ferromagnetic oxide, with self-assembled monolayers for spintronics. La2/3Sr1/3MnO3 is the prototypical half-metallic manganite used in spintronics studies. First, we show that La2/3Sr1/3MnO3 can be functionalized by alkylphosphonic acid molecules. Phylogenetic analysis of chloroplast DNA (cpDNA) restriction site variation supports a close genetic relationship between the Southwest AsianSenecio flavus subsp.breviflorus and the North AmericanS. mohavensis. The intercontinental disjunct distribution of these two desert annuals may have originated via long distance dispersal. The chloroplast genomes of the Southern and North AfricanS. flavus subsp.flavus and subsp.breviflorus differ by at least ten restriction sites, while at most two restriction sites differentiate the cpDNA genomes of subsp.breviflorus and the outgroupS. squalidus. The phase diagram of a magnetic colloid in a Hele-Shaw cell is calculated. As a function of the magnetic field strength, of the concentration and of the layer thickness the magnetic colloid can find itself in a stripe phase, the hexagonal phase or in an unmodulated state. Those results allow to interpret experiments observing the transformation of a labyrinthine pattern into a hexagonal structure. This possibility is confirmed directly by the numerical simulation presented here and showing the transformation of the labyrinthine pattern into the hexagonal structure.
Beam current oscillations driven by cyclotron instabilities in a minimum-Belectron cyclotron resonance ion source plasma

Experimental observation of cyclotron instabilities in a minimum-B confined electron cyclotron resonance ion source plasma is reported. The instabilities are associated with strong microwave emission and a burst of energetic electrons escaping the plasma, and explain the periodic ms-scale oscillation of the extracted beam currents. Such non-linear effects are detrimental for the confinement of highly charged ions due to plasma perturbations at shorter periodic intervals in comparison with their production time. Direct measurement of the radiative tail in electron scattering from atomic nuclei

We have made a direct measurement of the radiative tail of the eleastic peak from several tungsten targets. The measured data have been compared to the results expected for both internal and external bremsstrahlung contributions. Even for targets as thick as 4% of a radiation length of tungsten, agreement between the results of the experiment and the predictions of the theory has been found to be unexpectedly good.
Field analysis of the magnetic systems for tubular linear reluctance motors

We report a study of tubular linear reluctance motors (TLRMs) in various types of magnetic circuits. We carried out magnetic field analyses and calculated integral parameters of the field. We also determined static characteristics and electromagnetic parameters of the motor. We found good agreement between our calculations and tests of the motor with sinusoidal excitation.
Light-Induced Excited Spin State Trapping in Iron(II) Complexes

In the course of our studies on the thermally induced high spin (HS) ↔ low spin (LS) transition in iron(II) complexes /1/, \({\!^5{\text{T}}_2}_{\text{g}}\) ↔ \({\!^1{\text{A}}_1}_{\text{g}}\) in the approximation of Oh symmetry, we have observed in 1984 a new photophysical effect /2/: If, at sufficiently low temperature, the solid spin crossover complex is irradiated with green light into the \({\!^1{\text{A}}_1}\)→ \({\!^1{\text{T}}_1}\) ligand field absorption band, the thermodynamically stable LS state can be converted to the metastable HS state and trapped with practically infinite lifetime. We have called this unusual phenomenon “Light-Induced Excited Spin State Trapping (LIESST)”.
