The third instar larva and puparium of Gastrops willistoni Cresson (Diptera: Ephydridae), preying on eggs in a foam nest of Leptodactylus knudseni Heyer (Anura: Leptodactylidae), in a central Amazonian dryland forest (Brazil) are described for the first time. The fusiform larva has a short breathing tube, its anterior spiracles are fan-shaped and posterior spiracles with three spircular openings. Pupa is ovoid with a broad anterior margin and bifurcate posterior tip. The taxonomic relationship of the frog egg predators, Gastrops Williston and Typopsilopa Cresson, are discussed.

Functional investigation and applications of the acetylesterase activity of the Citrus sinensis (L.) Osbeck peel

The hydrolysis of acetyl moieties on a set of commercially relevant substrates was performed by employing the whole tissue of Citrus sinensis (L.) Osbeck peel as an efficient biocatalyst in mild reaction conditions with high degree of regioselectivity. The reaction is done in aqueous media and the product is easily recovered. Optimal reaction conditions were deduced and two practical applications were investigated: the elaboration of acetylglicerols and the preparation of vitamin K1 precursor. Peel waste (flavedo and albedo) from orange juice manufacturing was successfully employed as a biocatalyst.
Validation of a spectral light scattering method to differentiate large from small particles in intraocular lenses

A psychophysical approach has been designed to measure straylight from intraocular lenses (IOLs) in vitro. This approach uses a clinical straylight meter (C-Quant) and an observer's eye as optical detector. Based on this, we introduced a method for study of straylight-wavelength dependency for IOLs. This dependency can be used to distinguish between 2 types of scattering particles (small and large) as defined by Mie theory. Validation was performed using a turbidity standard and scattering filters. Several IOLs were analyzed to identify potential scattering sources. Femtosecond lasers are increasingly present in ophthalmologic surgical theaters for a variety of reasons. These include faster and better visual outcomes, increased accuracy and predictability for corneal flap thickness in laser in situ keratomileusis procedures. Recent applications of modern femtosecond lasers have broadened the range of uses: keratoplasty, intrastromal segment insertion and even glaucoma and presbyopia surgery. This device profile provides an overview of the advantages of femtosecond lasers in ophthalmic surgery, paying special attention to the new VisuMax® femtosecond laser from Zeiss/Meditec.
