Opposite vascular activity of (R)-apomorphine and its oxidised derivatives. Endothelium-dependent vasoconstriction induced by the auto-oxidation meta…
2003
We have synthetised a series of oxidised apomorphine derivatives (orto and para quinones 2-5), in order to analyse their vascular activity. We have performed radioligand binding assays on rat cortical membranes and functional studies on rat aortic rings. Instead the relaxant activity exhibited by (R)-apomorphine, o-quinones 2, 4, show contractile activity dependent on endothelium in rat aortic rings. Compound 2, the main metabolite of (R)-apomorphine auto-oxidation, was the product which showed enhanced contractile activity by a complex mechanism related to activation of Ca(2+) channels through release and/or inhibition of endothelial factors. Moreover, this compound disrupts the endothelia…
Induction of annexin-1 during TRAIL-induced apoptosis in thyroid carcinoma cells
2005
We investigated the expression of annexin-1 (ANXA1) in thyroid carcinoma cell lines and in thyroid cancers with a different degree of differentiation. The highest level of ANXA1 expression examined by Western blotting was detected in the papillary carcinoma cells (NPA) and in the follicular cells (WRO). On the other hand, the most undifferentiated thyroid carcinoma cells (ARO and FRO) presented the lowest level of ANXA1 expression. In surgical tissue specimens from 32 patients with thyroid cancers, we found high immunoreactivity for ANXA1 in papillary (PTC) and follicular (FTC) thyroid cancers while in undifferentiated thyroid cancers (UTC) the expression of the protein was barely detectabl…
Visible parts and dimensions
2003
We study the visible parts of subsets of n-dimensional Euclidean space: a point a of a compact set A is visible from an affine subspace K of n, if the line segment joining PK(a) to a only intersects A at a (here PK denotes projection onto K). The set of all such points visible from a given subspace K is called the visible part of A from K. We prove that if the Hausdorff dimension of a compact set is at most n−1, then the Hausdorff dimension of a visible part is almost surely equal to the Hausdorff dimension of the set. On the other hand, provided that the set has Hausdorff dimension larger than n−1, we have the almost sure lower bound n−1 for the Hausdorff dimensions of visible parts. We al…
One-dimensional families of projections
2008
Let m and n be integers with 0 < m < n. We consider the question of how much the Hausdorff dimension of a measure may decrease under typical orthogonal projections from onto m-planes provided that the dimension of the parameter space is one. We verify the best possible lower bound for the dimension drop and illustrate the sharpness of our results by examples. The question stems naturally from the study of measures which are invariant under the geodesic flow.
The selection of aptamers specific for membrane molecular targets
2010
AbstractA growing number of RNA aptamers have been selected experimentally using the SELEX combinatorial approach, and these aptamers have several advantages over monoclonal protein antibodies or peptides with respect to their applications in medicine and nanobiotechnology. Relatively few successful selections have been reported for membrane molecular targets, in contrast to the situation with non-membrane molecular targets. This review compares the procedures and techniques used in selections against membrane proteins and membrane lipids. In the case of membrane proteins, the selections were performed against soluble protein fragments, detergent-membrane protein mixed micelles, whole cells…
Symbiosis between photoactive nanoparticles and their organic ligands.
2013
Photoactive spherical metal and semiconductor nanoparticles (NPs) are smart systems that exhibit unique properties, such as a high surface-to-volume ratio, a broad absorption spectrum and size-dependent properties. They are capped with a considerable number of ligands required to give rise to stable organic and aqueous NP colloidal solutions. In addition, the ligands can also be used to introduce functionality at the NP periphery. In this case, the NP could act as a 3D-scaffold, which would make a high local concentration of a functional moiety at the NP periphery possible, moreover, the photophysical properties of the NP could be tuned. The combined action of the organic capping and the in…
Synthesis, solid state and solution studies of cobalt(II) complexes with 2-hydroxyiminopropanoic acid
2013
Abstract This paper describes the synthesis of the Zn(II) complex with H2L = 2-hydroxyiminopropanoic acid. The final structure incorporated two linear dimeric anions with two Zn2+ atoms, which are linked by a carbonate anion into a tetranuclear unit. In each dinuclear unit, the two Zn(II) ions are coordinated by three molecules of the doubly deprotonated ligand in two different coordination modes. This result is confirmed both by X-ray crystallography and by ESI-MS investigations of the crystals dissolved in water. Equilibrium studies of the zinc(II) complexes formed by H2L in aqueous solution based on independent pH-metric titrations and zinc ion-selective electrode (ISE) titrations indica…

We present herein the thermodynamic and X-ray characterisation of a novel ethyl phosphonohydroxamic acid-based Cu( ) metallacrown, predominating in solution in a broad pH range.
Complexation of the potassium ion by diaza crown compounds in aqueous solutions
1988
The conductance behavior of potassium nitrate in water with and without 1,7,10,16-tetraoxa-4,13-diazacyclooctandecane[2.2] and 4,7,13,16,21,24-hexaoxa-1,10-diazabicyclo-8.8.8-exacosane[2.2.2] macrocyclic ligands have been studied in order to analyze the complexation behavior of potassium cations in water. The absence of the complexation found in the [2.2] system is discussed in terms of the ligand structural features (presence of hydrogen bond donor and acceptor sites). The ion pair association constant of potassium cryptate as obtained from conductance measurements is also reported and discussed.
The interaction of organotins with native DNA
1992
The compounds R2SnCl2 and R3SnCl (RMe, Et, nBu, nOct, Ph, in ethanol solution) as well as the aqueous species [Me2Sn(OH2)n]2+ and [Me3Sn(OH2)2]+, react with aqueous native DNA, yielding solid phases. According to the pointcharge model treatment of the 119Sn Mossbauer parameter nuclear quadrupole splitting, trans-octahedral R2Sn(O2PXY)2, and trigonalbipyramidal R3Sn(O2PXY), (RMe, Et, nBu), would occur in the pellets, the tin atoms being coordinated by phosphodiester groups of the nucleic acid. The precipitates from Ph2SnIV would consist of the DNA complex as well as of the Ph2SnIV distannoxane obtained by hydrolysis of the reactant, whilst nOct2SnCl2, nOct3SnCl and Ph3SnCl would mainly yield…
