Assessment of Shear-Induced Structures by Real Space and Fourier Microscopy

2007

We report preliminary measurements of the shear-induced sliding layer structure in an aqueous suspension of highly charged polystyrene spheres. Particle interaction was controlled by advanced conditioning procedures to result in fluid or body-centred cubic equilibrium structures. Shear was applied in an optical plate-plate shear cell of variable slit width. Fourier microscopy yielded complementary information to real space analysis. The accessible range of scattering vectors was (3.5 ≤ k ≤ 7.2) μm−1 We checked the experimental performance by recording the form factor of a non-interacting suspension and structure factors of less dilute suspensions in dependence on electrolyte concentration c…

Catching the radio flare in CTA 102. III. Core-shift and spectral analysis

2013

The temporal and spatial spectral evolution of the jets of AGN can be studied with multi-frequency, multi-epoch VLBI observations. The combination of both, morphological and spectral parameters can be used to derive source intrinsic physical properties such as the magnetic field and the non-thermal particle density. In the first two papers of this series, we analyzed the single-dish light curves and the VLBI kinematics of the blazar CTA 102 and suggested a shock-shock interaction between a traveling and a standing shock wave as a possible scenario to explain the observed evolution of the component associated to the 2006 flare. In this paper we investigate the core-shift and spectral evoluti…

Giant collective incoherent shock waves in strong turbulence

2016

Contrary to conventional coherent shocks, we show theoretically and experimentally that nonlocal turbulent flows lead to the emergence of large-scale incoherent shock waves, which constitute a collective phenomenon of the incoherent field as a whole.

Multiwavelength afterglow light curves from magnetized gamma-ray burst flows

2010

We use high-resolution relativistic magnetohydrodynamics simulations coupled with a radiative transfer code to compute multiwavelength afterglow light curves of magnetized ejecta of gamma-ray bursts interacting with a uniform circumburst medium. The aim of our study is to determine how the magnetization of the ejecta at large distance from the central engine influences the afterglow emission, and to assess whether observations can be reliably used to infer the strength of the magnetic field. We find that, for typical parameters of the ejecta, the emission from the reverse shock peaks for magnetization (σ 0 ~ 0.01-0.1 of the flow, and that it is greatly suppressed for higher σ 0 . The emissi…

Optical encryption with compressive ghost imaging

2011

Ghost imaging (GI) is a novel technique where the optical information of an object is encoded in the correlation of the intensity fluctuations of a light source. Computational GI (CGI) is a variant of the standard procedure that uses a single bucket detector. Recently, we proposed to use CGI to encrypt and transmit the object information to a remote party [1]. The optical encryption scheme shows compressibility and robustness to eavesdropping attacks. The reconstruction algorithm provides a relative low quality images and requires high acquisitions times. A procedure to overcome such limitations is to combine CGI with compressive sampling (CS), an advanced signal processing theory that expl…

Route diversity analyses for free-space optical wireless links within turbulent scenarios

2013

Free-Space Optical (FSO) communications link performance is highly affected when propagating through the time-spatially variable turbulent environment. In order to improve signal reception, several mitigation techniques have been proposed and analytically investigated. This paper presents experimental results for the route diversity technique evaluations for a specific case when several diversity links intersects a common turbulent area and concurrently each passing regions with different turbulence flows.

Continuous Refocusing for Integral Microscopy with Fourier Plane Recording

2018

Integral or light field imaging is an attractive approach in microscopy, as it allows to capture 3D samples in just one shot and explore them later through changing the focus on particular depth planes of interest. However, it requires a compromise between spatial and angular resolution on the 2D sensor recording the microscopic images. A particular setting called Fourier Integral Microscope (FIMic) allows maximizing the spatial resolution for the cost of reducing the angular one. In this work, we propose a technique, which aims at reconstructing the continuous light field from sparse FIMic measurements, thus providing the functionality of continuous refocus on any arbitrary depth plane. Ou…

Graphical Schemes Designed to Display and Study the Long-term Variations of Schumann Resonance

2019

This work proposes and illustrates a graphical approach aimed at studying a wide range of features of the ELF horizontal magnetic field signal recorded at the Sierra Nevada station (Spain). In addition to the traditional long-term variations in the parameters of the first three Schumann resonances (their amplitudes, central frequencies and widths), many other properties such as the saturations of the magnetometers, anomalous values for the parameters or spectra with any kind of particularities are taken into consideration in this work. These features can provide us with complementary information about the long-term variation of Schumann resonances, give an estimation of the extent up to whi…

Three-dimensional dynamic light scattering

1999

Abstract We describe the employment of a novel light-scattering scheme for the decorrelation of multiple scattering in strongly turbid samples. The three-dimensional scheme, which has been proposed already theoretically, shows certain advantages compared with the two-colour apparatus, which is commercially available. We describe our set-up in detail; features are the use of modern semiconductor laser diodes and contemporary single-mode fibre receivers. We show experimentally that the optimal signal-to-noise ratio (or intercept) β opt = 0.20, which is obtainable with our set-up, can be quantitatively calculated from the measured uncertainties in the alignment. In particular, we give a detail…

A cryptochrome-based photosensory system in the siliceous sponge Suberites domuncula (Demospongiae)

2010

Based on the light-reactive behavior of siliceous sponges, their intriguing quartz glass-based spicular system and the existence of a light-generating luciferase [Muller WEG et al. (2009) Cell Mol Life Sci 66, 537–552], a protein potentially involved in light reception has been identified, cloned and recombinantly expressed from the demosponge Suberites domuncula. Its sequence displays two domains characteristic of cryptochrome, the N-terminal photolyase-related region and the C-terminal FAD-binding domain. The expression level of S. domuncula cryptochrome depends on animal’s exposure to light and is highest in tissue regions rich in siliceous spicules; in the dark, no cryptochrome transcri…
