Swift observations of GRB 060614: an anomalous burst with a well behaved afterglow

GRB 060614 is a remarkable GRB observed by Swift with puzzling properties, which challenge current progenitor models. The lack of any bright SN down to very strict limits and the vanishing spectral lags are typical of short GRBs, strikingly at odds with the long (102s) duration of this event. Here we present spectral and temporal analysis of the Swift observations. We show that the burst presents standard optical, UV and X-ray afterglows. An achromatic break is observed simultaneously in optical and X-rays, at a time consistent with the break in the R-band light curve measured by the VLT. Synaptobrevin cleavage by the tetanus toxin light chain is linked to the inhibition of exocytosis in chromaffin cells

AbstractExocytosis of secretory granules by adrenal chromaffin cells is blocked by the tetanus toxin light chain in a zinc specific manner. Here we show that cellular synaptobrevin is almost completely degraded by the tetanus toxin light chain within 15 min. We used highly purified adrenal secretory granules to show that synaptobrevin, which can be cleaved by the tetanus toxin light chain, is localized in the vesicular membrane. Proteolysis of synaptobrevin in cells and in secretory granules is reversibly inhibited by the zinc chelating agent dipicolinic acid. Three-dimensional phase unwrapping using the Hungarian algorithm.

We propose a three-dimensional phase unwrapping technique that uses the Hungarian algorithm to join together all the partial residual loops that may occur in a wrapped phase volume. Experimental results have shown that the proposed algorithm is more robust and reliable than other well-known three-dimensional phase unwrapping algorithms. Additionally, the proposed algorithm is fast in terms of computational complexity, which makes it suitable for practical applications.

Photoelastic Analysis of Partially Occluded Objects With an Integral-Imaging Polariscope

Polariscopes are the basic instruments used for the analysis of the stress state of transparent materials. Polarized light passing through a 3D object carries the integrated effect of the stress field along the light path. Therefore, conventional polariscopes are not able to discern the stress state of objects involving multiple plates with mutual occlusions. Synthetic aperture superresolution by speckle pattern projection.

We propose a method for increasing the resolution of an aperture limited optical system by illuminating the input with a speckle pattern. The high resolution of the projected speckle pattern demodulates the high frequencies of the sample and permits its passage through the system aperture. A decoding provides the superresolved image. The speckle pattern can be generated in a simple manner in contrast with other structured light superresolution methods. The method is demonstrated in microscopy test images.

Aiding phase unwrapping by increasing the number of residues in two-dimensional wrapped-phase distributions.

In phase unwrapping residues are points of locally inconsistent phase that occur within a wrapped-phase map, which are usually regarded as being problematic for phase-unwrapping algorithms. Real phase maps typically contain a number of residues that are approximately proportional to the subsequent difficulty in unwrapping the phase distribution. This paper suggests the radical use of the discrete Fourier transform to actually increase the number of residues in 2D phase-wrapped images that contain discontinuities. International audience; Before participating in a space mission, astronauts undergo parabolic-flight and underwater training to facilitate their subsequent adaptation to weightlessness. Unfortunately, similar training methods can't be used to prepare re adaptation to planetary gravity. Here, we propose a quick, simple and inexpensive approach that could be used to prepare astronauts both for the absence and for the renewed presence of gravity. Observation of intrinsically bright terrestrial gamma ray flashes from the Mediterranean basin

Abstract  We present three terrestrial gamma ray flashes (TGFs) observed over the Mediterranean basin by the Reuven Ramaty High Energy Solar Spectroscope Imager (RHESSI) satellite. Since the occurrence of these events in the Mediterranean region is quite rare, the characterization of the events was optimized by combining different approaches in order to better define the cloud of origin. The TGFs on 7 November 2004 and 16 October 2006 came from clouds with cloud top higher than 10–12 km where often a strong penetration into the stratosphere is found.
