Responses to eccentric rotation in two space-bound subjects
1993
Two subjects were rotated eccentrically in the manner described previously. In contrast to a normal control group, settings of a luminous line to the subjective vertical were almost unrelated to the gravitoinertial vector before, and totally so shortly after, space flight. Only 3 days postflight did a clear relation to the gravitoinertial vector re-establish itself in the one subject who actually flew. The correspondence became normal 5 days after the flight. Since there were no clinical abnormalities evident in the subjects, it is suggested that both subjects suppressed their vestibular information, presumably as an effect of vestibular deconditioning training before the flight. In additio…
From the Field to the Laboratory: Quantifying Outdoor Mosquito Landing Rate to Better Evaluate Topical Repellents.
2021
Abstract Vector-borne diseases are a worldwide threat to human health. Often, no vaccines or treatments exist. Thus, personal protection products play an essential role in limiting transmission. The World Health Organization (WHO) arm-in-cage (AIC) test is the most common method for evaluating the efficacy of topical repellents, but it remains unclear whether AIC testing conditions recreate the mosquito landing rates in the field. This study aimed to estimate the landing rate outdoors, in an area of Europe highly infested with the Asian tiger mosquito (Aedes albopictus (Skuse, 1894, Diptera: Culididae)), and to determine how to replicate this rate in the laboratory. To assess the landing ra…
Machiavellego rozumienie dobra i zła
2015
Niccolo Machiavelli’s way of understanding the notions of good and evil rely on his theory of the origins of communities, according to which their basic structure is build around the figures of founders. Communities are kept alive by the constant effort make by their members to take care of common good and practice of crafts of peace. Forces opposed to the founders and disarraying the social life can be described as the figures on the continuum stretched between traitors, as Brutus or Judas, and lazy-bones or cowards, parasiting on the fruits of common labor. This way of understanding the good and the evil has its roots in the age of Athenian Enlightenment – in the conception of virtue ethi…
Hybrid VLC/WiFi Architectures with Priority Feedback Channels
2022
In this paper, we consider integrating Visible Light Communication (VLC) and WiFi technologies in an ultra-dense (massive) Internet of Things scenario, where WiFi links are used for complementing VLC links and vice-versa. Indeed, in case of mobility and/or bidirectional communications, limited coverage areas and self-generated interference can be an issue. We consider hybrid VLC/WiFi nodes where the VLC link is used for the majority of (data) traffic and the WiFi link is employed as a feedback channel (e.g. transmitting TCP ACKs). In presence of intense WiFi traffic, the WiFi network may be congested and thus, to fully exploit the VLC bandwidth, we discuss possible priority mechanisms to fu…
Environment-Aware RSSI Based Positioning Algorithm for Random Angle Interference Cancellation in Visible Light Positioning System
2021
International audience; Visible Light Positioning (VLP) is considered to be one of the most promising candidates for future Location Based Service (LBSs). The traditional Received Signal Strength Indication (RSSI) based VLP system is highly sensitized with receiver's orientation. However, the assumption of the receiver's orientation fixed or perfectly known is not realistic in practice. Thus, a random angle between receiver and the horizontal plane inevitably appears among localization, which extremely affects positioning results. This paper proposed an Environment-Aware RSSI based positioning algorithm for VLP system. It enables to mainly eliminate random angle interference without the hel…
Visible light active self-cleaning materials based on porphyrin-sensitised titanium dioxide
2017
Starting from second half of last century, nanostructured semiconductors have had a crucial function in the material science because of their wide application field going from renewable energy to organic/hybrid electronics up to photocatalysis. Among those materials, titanium dioxide is probably the most used because of some important characteristics like the chemical/mechanical stability, environmental sustainability, its low cost and versatility. Indeed, it has been successfully employed as photo- and electro-active component in electronic devices as well as photocatalytic agent1 in water de-pollution application. Interestingly and importantly together, titanium dioxide may also be applie…
Effect of Light Scattering Simulation in the Eye on Different Color Stimuli Perception
2008
One of the factors which influences visual functions is intraocular light scattering. To assess the effect of light scattering and stimulus color on visual functions, visual acuity and retinal straylight were measured with and without light scattering occluder. For visual acuity measurements black Landolt optotypes on red, green and blue background were used. Retinal straylight was measured with a direct compensation method using the same colors stimuli. For one subject straylight was measured with 5 different light scattering levels of eye occluder.
Issues Related to the Restoration of Mirrors of the Wooden paliotto della chiesa del Santissimo Crocifisso all’Albergheria, Sicily (Italy)
2017
ABSTRACTIn this work, the decision-making process involved in the restoration of the eighteenth century paliotto ligneo (wooden altar frontal) della chiesa del Santissimo Crocifisso all’Albergheria of Palermo is presented. Earlier research concerning mirror restoration was based on only a few case studies and the proposed techniques were not suitable for the artwork here. As a consequence, it was necessary to re-examine theories and protocols of modern restoration to plan an appropriate intervention of the altar frontal. Since in this artwork the role of mirrors is not to give back images, as usual, but rather to create special light effects and play of lights, this work aims to find an app…
Spectral scattering dependencies of controllable PLZT occluder for vision science applications
2001
Summary form only given. PLZT ceramics have an unique property - a facility to change the light scattering efficiency with the applied electric field. This effect is well manifested especially in the visible, just where the transparency windows of PLZT begins. Formerly we developed eye occlusion devices for vision science applications to introduce a dynamic decrease of the image contrast in stereovision tests. In future we plan to construct, using controllable scattering in PLZT, an eye simulator to study cataract caused retinal image quality reduction. The present work reports on spectral dependencies of such an eye occluder studied with the double optical integrated sphere technique.
Visual grouping under isoluminant condition: impact of mental fatigue
2016
Instead of selecting arbitrary elements our visual perception prefers only certain grouping of information. There is ample evidence that the visual attention and perception is substantially impaired in the presence of mental fatigue. The question is how visual grouping, which can be considered a bottom-up controlled neuronal gain mechanism, is influenced. The main purpose of our study is to determine the influence of mental fatigue on visual grouping of definite information – color and configuration of stimuli in the psychophysical experiment. Individuals provided subjective data by filling in the questionnaire about their health and general feeling. The objective evidence was obtained in t…
