Enhanced chemiluminescent determination of chloramphenicol and related nitro compounds by ‘on-line’ photochemical reaction

2000

The viability of tandem photochemical reaction-chemiluminescence detection was studied for a heterogeneous family of nitro compounds using chloramphenicol as a test substance. The 'on-line' chemical photodegradation of chloramphenicol was performed in a flow injection assembly by using a photoreactor consisting of a 725 cm x 0.5 mm id piece of PTFE tubing coiled around an 8 W low-pressure mercury lamp. Photodegraded chloramphenicol was detected by oxidizing photo-fragments from the parent compound and their subsequent reaction with a luminol-Co(II) system. The calibration graph was linear up to 3 x 10(-5) mol l-1 chloramphenicol, the limit of detection was 3 x 10(-9) mol l-1, the relative s…

Gamma irradiation of graphene quantum dots with ethylenediamine: Antioxidant for ion sensing

2020

Due to the low consumption of chemicals, the absence of toxic residual side products, the procedure simplicity and time-saving aspects, gamma irradiation offers advantages over the classical chemical protocols. We successfully employed gamma irradiation in order to introduce N-atoms in Graphene Quantum Dots (GQDs). By irradiating GQDs water dispersions in the presence of isopropyl alcohol and ethylenediamine, at doses of 25, 50 and 200 kGy, we attached amino groups onto GQDs in a single synthetic step. At the same time, a chemical reduction is achieved, too. Selected conditions induced incorporation of N-atoms within GDQs atomic lattice (around 3 at%), at all applied doses. Additionally, th…

Upper limit on the cosmic-ray photon flux above 1019 eV using the surface detector of the Pierre Auger Observatory

2008

A method is developed to search for air showers initiated by photons using data recorded by the surface detector of the Auger Observatory. The approach is based on observables sensitive to the longitudinal shower development, the signal risetime and the curvature of the shower front. Applying this method to the data, upper limits on the flux of photons of 3.8 x 10-3, 2.5 x 10-3; and 2.2 x 10-3 km-2 sr-1 yr-1 above 1019 eV, 2 x 1019 eV; and 4 x 1019 eV are derived, with corresponding limits on the fraction of photons being 2.0%, 5.1%, and 31% (all limits at 95% c.l.). These photon limits disfavor certain exotic models of sources of cosmic rays. The results also show that the approach adopted…

Real-time and low-cost sensing technique based on photonic bandgap structures

2011

[EN] A technique for the development of low-cost and high-sensitivity photonic biosensing devices is proposed and experimentally demonstrated. In this technique, a photonic bandgap structure is used as transducer, but its readout is performed by simply using a broadband source, an optical filter, and a power meter, without the need of obtaining the transmission spectrum of the structure; thus, a really low-cost system and real-time results are achieved. Experimental results show that it is possible to detect very low refractive index variations, achieving a detection limit below 2 x 10(-6) refractive index units using this low-cost measuring technique. Diffusive behavior and the modeling of characteristic times in limit order executions

2007

We present an empirical study of the first passage time (FPT) of order book prices needed to observe a prescribed price change Delta, the time to fill (TTF) for executed limit orders and the time to cancel (TTC) for canceled ones in a double auction market. We find that the distribution of all three quantities decays asymptotically as a power law, but that of FPT has significantly fatter tails than that of TTF. Thus a simple first passage time model cannot account for the observed TTF of limit orders. We propose that the origin of this difference is the presence of cancellations. We outline a simple model, which assumes that prices are characterized by the empirically observed distribution …

How does the market react to your order flow?

2012

We present an empirical study of the intertwined behaviour of members in a financial market. Exploiting a database where the broker that initiates an order book event can be identified, we decompose the correlation and response functions into contributions coming from different market participants and study how their behaviour is interconnected. We find evidence that (1) brokers are very heterogeneous in liquidity provision -- some are consistently liquidity providers while others are consistently liquidity takers. (2) The behaviour of brokers is strongly conditioned on the actions of {\it other} brokers. In contrast brokers are only weakly influenced by the impact of their own previous ord…

Lorentzian-geometry-based analysis of airplane boarding policies highlights "slow passengers first" as better.

2019

We study airplane boarding in the limit of large number of passengers using geometric optics in a Lorentzian metric. The airplane boarding problem is naturally embedded in a 1+1 dimensional space-time with a flat Lorentzian metric. The duration of the boarding process can be calculated based on a representation of the one-dimensional queue of passengers attempting to reach their seats, into a two-dimensional space-time diagram. The ability of a passenger to delay other passengers depends on their queue positions and row designations. This is equivalent to the causal relationship between two events in space-time, whereas two passengers are time-like separated if one is blocking the other, an…

Search for Lorentz and CPT violation using sidereal time dependence of neutrino flavor transitions over a short baseline

2017

A class of extensions of the Standard Model allows Lorentz and CPT violations, which can be identified by the observation of sidereal modulations in the neutrino interaction rate. A search for such modulations was performed using the T2K on-axis near detector. Two complementary methods were used in this study, both of which resulted in no evidence of a signal. Limits on associated Lorentz and CPT-violating terms from the Standard Model extension have been derived by taking into account their correlations in this model for the first time. These results imply such symmetry violations are suppressed by a factor of more than 1020 at the GeV scale.

Limiting neutrino magnetic moments with Borexino Phase-II solar neutrino data

2017

A search for the solar neutrino effective magnetic moment has been performed using data from 1291.5 days exposure during the second phase of the Borexino experiment. No significant deviations from the expected shape of the electron recoil spectrum from solar neutrinos have been found, and a new upper limit on the effective neutrino magnetic moment of $\mu_{\nu}^{eff}$ $<$ 2.8$\cdot$10$^{-11}$ $\mu_{B}$ at 90\% c.l. has been set using constraints on the sum of the solar neutrino fluxes implied by the radiochemical gallium experiments.Using the limit for the effective neutrino moment, new limits for the magnetic moments of the neutrino flavor states, and for the elements of the neutrino magne…
