Palliative ventilatory support: same knowledge, different goal.

Palliative care as a clinical field emerged in the 1990s, aiming at improving end-of-life (EOL) experience for seriously ill patients (1). It changed the way to approach families saying them that their loved ones were approaching the end limiting life support while maintain comfort (2). It is now also evident that palliative care has not only to be seen as the job of consultants or by specialists in this field but also an approach to care at the “primary” level by intensivist, intensive care unit (ICU) nurses, and other clinicians (2).

Purpose: As studies examining the association between bone mineral density (BMD) and airflow limitation (AL) have produced conflicting results, the current one set out to analyze if and to what degree there are any correlations between these variables in a population of fit elderly women. Methods: One hundred and twenty-one non-smoking, fit and healthy women (age ≥ 65 years) underwent anthropometric assessment, laboratory testing (serum 25-hydroxy vitamin D, parathormone, and cytokine levels), pulmonary function testing (PFT), and dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry to evaluate BMD values of the lumbar and femoral regions. Abstract By combining ideas of homotopical algebra and of enriched category theory, we explain how two classical formulas for homotopy colimits, one arising from the work of Quillen and one arising from the work of Bousfield and Kan, are instances of general formulas for the derived functor of the weighted colimit functor.
Finite cyclicity of some center graphics through a nilpotent point inside quadratic systems

In this paper we introduce new methods to prove the finite cyclicity of some graphics through a triple nilpotent point of saddle or elliptic type surrounding a center. After applying a blow-up of the family, yielding a singular 3-dimensional foliation, this amounts to proving the finite cyclicity of a family of limit periodic sets of the foliation. The boundary limit periodic sets of these families were the most challenging, but the new methods are quite general for treating such graphics. Harnack and Shmul'yan pre-order relations for Hilbert space contractions

We study the behavior of some classes of Hilbert space contractions with respect to Harnack and Shmul'yan pre-orders and the corresponding equivalence relations. We give some conditions under which the Harnack equivalence of two given contractions is equivalent to their Shmul'yan equivalence and to the existence of an arc joining the two contractions in the class of operator-valued contractive analytic functions on the unit disc. We apply some of these results to quasi-isometries and quasi-normal contractions, as well as to partial isometries for which we show that their Harnack and Shmul'yan parts coincide. ?Almost? mean-field ising model: An algebraic approach

We study the thermodynamic limit of the algebraic dynamics for an "almost" mean-field Ising model, which is a slight generalization of the Ising model in the mean-field approximation. We prove that there exists a family of "relevant" states on which the algebraic dynamics αt can be defined. This αt defines a group of automorphisms of the algebra obtained by completing the standard spin algebra with respect to the quasiuniform topology defined by our states. © 1991 Plenum Publishing Corporation.

In this paper, we study the geometry of surfaces with the generalised simple lift property. This work generalises previous results by Bernstein and Tinaglia, and it is motivated by the fact that leaves of a minimal lamination obtained as a limit of a sequence of properly embedded minimal disks satisfy the generalised simple lift property.
Techniques in the Theory of Local Bifurcations: Cyclicity and Desingularization

A fundamental open question of the bifurcation theory of vector fields in dimension 2 is whether the number of locally bifurcating limit cycles in an analytic unfolding is bounded, or more precisely, whether any limit periodic set has finite cyclicity. In these notes we introduce several techniques for attacking this question: asymptotic expansion of return maps, ideal of coefficients, desingularization of parametrized families. Moreover, because of their practical interest, we present some partial results obtained by these techniques.
New degeneration of Fay's identity and its application to integrable systems

In this paper, we find a new degenerated version of Fay's trisecant identity; this degeneration corresponds to the limit when the four points entering the trisecant identity coincide pairwise. This degenerated version of Fay's identity is used to construct algebro-geometric solutions to the multi-component nonlinear Schrodinger equation. This identity also leads to an independent derivation of algebro-geometric solutions to the Davey–Stewartson equations previously obtained in [17] in the framework of the Krichever scheme. We also give the condition of smoothness of the obtained solutions.
Rigged Hilbert spaces and contractive families of Hilbert spaces

The existence of a rigged Hilbert space whose extreme spaces are, respectively, the projective and the inductive limit of a directed contractive family of Hilbert spaces is investigated. It is proved that, when it exists, this rigged Hilbert space is the same as the canonical rigged Hilbert space associated to a family of closable operators in the central Hilbert space.
