Simplified Modeling of Radiant Fields in Heterogeneous Photoreactors. 2. Limiting “Two-Flux” Model for the Case of Reflectance Greater Than Zero

1997

In the first part of this work a simple model for the description of the radiant field in heterogeneous photoreactors was developed, based on the assumption of zero reflectance of the particles. In this second part of the investigation a limiting model is developed in which the above hypothesis is removed. In this last model, scattering phenomena are dealt with in a very simple “two-flux” way, so that analytical solutions are obtained again. The case here developed is the same as in part 1, namely slab geometry with orthogonal parallel irradiation, giving special reference to the important case of semi-infinite reactor thickness. Both cases of solid catalysts with single particle size and w…

Limit analysis of a beam in bending immersed in an elastoplastic medium

1968

The behavior of the beam-soil system is examined within the scope of the bilateral schematization of ideal elastoplastic bodies, in the following work stages; the expression for the limit load is supplied for each stage: Two peculiar features of the problem are highlighted:1) the “plastic hinge migration” phenomenon, due to the elastic unloading of the material, and2) the successive propagation of plastification in the soil which, being related to the displacement of the hinges in the beam, leads to the identification of the collapse mechanism of the systme.

Subamorphous thermal conductivity of crystalline half-Heusler superlattices

2021

The quest to improve the thermoelectric figure of merit has mainly followed the roadmap of lowering the thermal conductivity while keeping unaltered the power factor of the material. Ideally an electron-crystal phonon-glass system is desired. In this work, we report an extraordinary reduction of the cross-plane thermal conductivity in crystalline (TiNiSn):(HfNiSn) half-Heusler superlattices (SLs). We create SLs with thermal conductivities below the effective amorphous limit, which is kept in a large temperature range (120–300 K). We measured thermal conductivity at room temperature values as low as 0.75 W m−1 K−1, the lowest thermal conductivity value reported so far for half-Heusler compou…

The shakedown load boundary of an elastic-perfectly plastic structure

1995

In the hypothesis of small displacements and combined time-variable/steady loads, the geometrical-mechanical properties of the shakedown load boundary are investigated. It is shown that, in the load space, the shakedown load boundary plays the role of yield surface, and that a certain plastic strain accumulation vector—characterizing some impending inadaptation collapse mechanism—obeys the normality rule, whereas a specific form of the maximum plastic work theorem constitutes an effective tool for the evaluation of the shakedown limit load corresponding to a specified inadaptation collapse mode. The equations governing the state of the structure at the shakedown limit are provided and the r…

Thermodynamics of small systems embedded in a reservoir: a detailed analysis of finite size effects

2012

International audience; We present a detailed study on the finite size scaling behaviour of thermodynamic properties for small systems of particles embedded in a reservoir. Previously, we derived that the leading finite size effects of thermodynamic properties for small systems scale with the inverse of the linear length of the small system, and we showed how this can be used to describe systems in the thermodynamic limit [Chem. Phys. Lett. 504, 199 (2011)]. This approach takes into account an effective surface energy, as a result of the non-periodic boundaries of the small embedded system. Deviations from the linear behaviour occur when the small system becomes very small, i.e. smaller tha…

Determination of limiting current density and current efficiency in electrodialysis units

2018

Abstract A crucial parameter for the design and operation of electrodialysis (ED) units is the limiting current density (LCD). This is often identified with the diffusion-limited current density, which corresponds to the complete solute depletion in the layer adjacent to the membrane. Current-voltage curves obtained from measurements with electrodes in contact with the solution (i.e. without membranes) are consistent with this interpretation and exhibit a horizontal plateau identifying LCD. However, real ED systems show more complex behaviours, with a reduced-slope tract instead of a plateau and a third region in which the current increases more markedly (overlimiting current). The phenomen…

Wronskian representation of solutions of NLS equation, and seventh order rogue wave.

2012

This work is a continuation of a recent paper in which we have constructed a multi-parametric family of the nonlinear Schrodinger equation in terms of wronskians. When we perform a special passage to the limit, we get a family of quasi-rational solutions expressed as a ratio of two determinants. We have already construct Peregrine breathers of orders N=4, 5, 6 in preceding works; we give here the Peregrine breather of order seven.

Searches for heavy neutrinos from Z decays

1992

We have searched for possible fourth family heavy neutrinos, pair produced in Z0 decays, in a sample of about 112 000 hadronic Z0 final states collected with the DELPHI detector. For all mixing matrix elements we exclude a new Dirac neutrino lighter than 44.5 GeV at a 95% confidence level, if the neutrino couples to the electron or muon family, and lighter than 44.0 GeV, if the neutrino couples to the tau family. Depending on the values of the mixing element and to which lepton family the neutrino couples, we obtain mass limits up to 46.2 GeV. For all mixing matrix elements we exclude a new Majorana neutrino lighter than 39.0 GeV, if it couples to the electron or the muon family, and lighte…

"Table 3: Cross-section limits b-associated production" of "Search for a heavy Higgs boson decaying into a $Z$ boson and another heavy Higgs boson in…

2018

The cross section times BR(A->ZH) times BR(H->bb) limits for a narrow width A boson produced in association with b-quarks. For each signal point, characterised by the mass pair (mA, mH), two limits are provided, the observed and the expected. The result refers to the combination of the nb=2 and nb>=3 categories.

2018

The cross section times BR(A->ZH) times BR(H->bb) limits for an A boson in the flipped, tanbeta 20, 2HDM. For each signal point, characterised by the mass pair (mA, mH), two limits are provided, the observed and the expected. The correct width as predicted by this particular parameter choice of the 2HDM is used. For flipped both gluon-gluon fusion and b-associated production are used and the nb=2 and nb>=3 categories are combined.
