How to tackle the stringent sulfate removal requirements in mine water treatment-A review of potential methods.

2018

Abstract Sulfate (SO₄²⁻) is a ubiquitous anion in natural waters. It is not considered toxic, but it may be detrimental to freshwater species at elevated concentrations. Mining activities are one significant source of anthropogenic sulfate into natural waters, mainly due to the exposure of sulfide mineral ores to weathering. There are several strategies for mitigating sulfate release, starting from preventing sulfate formation in the first place and ending at several end-of-pipe treatment options. Currently, the most widely used sulfate-removal process is precipitation as gypsum (CaSO₄·2H₂O). However, the lowest reachable concentration is theoretically 1500 mg L⁻¹ SO₄²⁻ due to gypsum’s solu…

Durée et catastrophe. Régimes temporels et conflits écologiques à l’heure de la globalisation de l’environnement

2020

Elaborating from anthropology of nature and semiotic of culture, the work aims to illustrate that every ecological crisis is, also, a temporality crisis. In order to do so, it compares different visions of future – and, therefore, of the present of the enunciator – that shape international environmental crisis between ’60 and ’70. The first, insisting on risks, comes from Massachusetts Institute of Technology, advising about the Limits to Growth; the second, insisting on risk normalization, comes from UN first Earth Summit; both discourses are registered in reports published in 1972 and read worldwide. The analysis shows that while the MIT report successfully points the temporality crisis r…

Concerning the calculation of the color gamut in a digital camera

2006

Several methods to determine the color gamut of any digital camera are shown. Since an input device is additive, its color triangle was obtained from their spectral sensitivities and it was compared with the theoretical sensors of Ives-Abney-Yule and MacAdam. On the other hand, the RGB digital data of the optimal or MacAdam colors were simulated to transform them into XYZ data according to the colorimetric profile of the digital camera. From this, the MacAdam limits associated to the digital camera are compared with the corresponding ones of the CIE-1931 XYZ standard observer, resulting that our color device has much smaller MacAdam loci than those of the colorimetric standard observer. Tak…

Weighted limits in simplicial homotopy theory

2010

Abstract By combining ideas of homotopical algebra and of enriched category theory, we explain how two classical formulas for homotopy colimits, one arising from the work of Quillen and one arising from the work of Bousfield and Kan, are instances of general formulas for the derived functor of the weighted colimit functor.

Search for a diffuse flux of high-energy ¿µ with the ANTARES neutrino telescope

2011

A search for a diffuse flux of astrophysical muon neutrinos, using data collected by the ANTARES neutrino telescope is presented. A $(0.83\times 2\pi)$ sr sky was monitored for a total of 334 days of equivalent live time. The searched signal corresponds to an excess of events, produced by astrophysical sources, over the expected atmospheric neutrino background. The observed number of events is found compatible with the background expectation. Assuming an $E^{-2}$ flux spectrum, a 90% c.l. upper limit on the diffuse $\nu_\mu$ flux of $E^2\Phi_{90%} = 5.3 \times 10^{-8} \ \mathrm{GeV\ cm^{-2}\ s^{-1}\ sr^{-1}} $ in the energy range 20 TeV - 2.5 PeV is obtained. Other signal models with differ…

Single point incremental forming: An assessment of the progress and technology trends from 2005 to 2015

2017

The last decade has seen considerable interest in flexible forming processes. Among the upcoming flexible forming techniques, one that has captured a lot of interest is single point incremental forming (SPIF), where a flat sheet is incrementally deformed into a desired shape by the action of a tool that follows a defined toolpath conforming to the final part geometry. Research on SPIF in the last ten years has focused on defining the limits of this process, understanding the deformation mechanics and material behaviour and extending the process limits using various strategies. This paper captures the developments that have taken place over the last decade in academia and industry to highlig…

Search for a Higgs Boson Decaying to Two W Bosons at CDF

2008

We present a search for a Higgs boson decaying to two W bosons in p (p) over bar collisions at root s = 1.96 TeV center-of-mass energy. The data sample corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 3.0 fb(-1) collected with the CDF II detector. We find no evidence for production of a Higgs boson with mass between 110 and 200 GeV/c(2), and determine upper limits on the production cross section. For the mass of 160 GeV/c(2), where the analysis is most sensitive, the observed (expected) limit is 0.7 pb (0.9 pb) at 95% Bayesian credibility level which is 1.7 (2.2) times the standard model cross section.

Raccontare e raccontarsi al di là dei "limiti": "Ṣamt al-nawāqīs" di Fatḥiyya Dabiš

2023

Fatḥiyya Dabiš is a Tunisian novelist, poet, short story writer, translator and literary critic who was born in Mareth in 1969. She is best known for her debut novel, entitled “Mīlānīn” (Melanin) and published in 2019, which won the 6th edition (2020) of the prestigious “Katara Prize for Arabic Novel” (Ğā’izat Katārā li’l-riwāya al-‘arabiyya) in the category “Published Novels” (Fi’at al-riwāyāt al-manšūra). The present article focuses on her collection “Ṣamt al-nawāqīs” (The Silence of the Bells), which is a hybrid narrative work (mağmū‘a qiṣaṣiyya sardiyya hağīna) published in 2018. As the writer clarifies in the Introduction, it is not simply a short story collection but rather a selectio…

Aidòs. Percorsi di etica del limite

2022
