For the resolute interpreters, such an ontology should be considered as mere part of the set of nonsensical propositions that make up the parody of a semantic theory. TV show opening credits can be considered as frames which delimit the borders of a filmic text. They aim at advising and attracting the audience by highlighting specific aspects of the program. In doing that, opening credits as well as other forms of intros activate specific styles of relationship between the instances of production and reception of texts. They can be considered acts of enunciation through which the enunciator establishes its own discourse and gives instructions to the enunciatee about the text. Is displacement possible without language? This question was addressed in a recent work by Liszkowski and colleagues (Liszkowski, Schafer, Carpenter, & Tomasello, 2009). The authors carried out an experiment to demonstrate that 12-month-old prelinguistic infants can communicate about absent entities by using pointing gestures, while chimpanzees cannot. The main hypothesis of their study is that displacement does not depend on language but is, however, exclusively human and instead depends on species-specific social-cognitive human skills. But a quick look at many of its different domains of application (e.g. theoretical biology, mathematics, aesthetics, linguistics, etc., etc.) proves that “pattern” has a semantic potential richer than one usually expressed by such a definition.
