One of the initial steps of neurogenesis in the Drosophila embryo is the delamination of a stereotype set of neural progenitor cells (neuroblasts) from the neuroectoderm. The time window of neuroblast segregation has been divided into five successive waves (S1-S5) in which subsets of neuroblasts with specific identities are formed. To test when identity specification of the various neuroblasts takes place and whether extrinsic signals are involved, we have performed heterochronic transplantation experiments. Cephalic ganglia in arthropods encompass neuromeres of the supraesophageal ganglion (i.e., the brain) and the subesophageal ganglion. Whereas neuromeres of the subesophageal ganglion are clearly distinguishable, the segmental pattern of the brain is derived and less well understood. In this article, we give an overview of the current state of a long-lasting debate on the segmental organization of the arthropod head and brain, discussing embryonic morphological and molecular data, with a main focus on insects. These studies took advantage of the DNA barcoding approach and generally showed that it is possible to identify diet composition from plant DNA present in insect guts. The lateral geniculate nucleus is the first relay station for the visual information. Relay neurons of this thalamic nucleus integrate input from retinal ganglion cells and project it to the visual cortex. In addition, relay neurons receive top-down excitation from the cortex. The two main excitatory inputs to the relay neurons differ in several aspects. Each relay neuron receives input from only a few retinogeniculate synapses, which are large terminals with many release sites. ISunmrary: The syntheses and radioactive labeling of several galanthamine derivatives, 6-O-demethyl-6-O-fluoroethylgalanthamine, 10-N-demethyl-lO-Nfluoroethylgalanthamine and N-methylgalanthaminium are reported. First ill vitro evaluations were carried out to determine their properties as allosterically potentiating ligands of nicotinic receptors. N-methylgalanthaminium was found to be a promising candidate for further investigations. Fifty weevil species have been recorded from new localities in Poland. They belong to four families: Anthribidae (1), Apionidae (6), Nanophyidae (2) and Curculionidae (41). The new records, 124 in all, are from 64 UTM squares (10×10 km) in 17 of 24 regions of Poland, according to the division adopted from the Catalogus Faunae Poloniae issued in 1971-2000. Nearly half of them (57) are first records for a region. The largest numbers of the new records are from the Małopolska Upland (13), the Pomeranian Lakeland (8), Upper Silesia (7) and the Wielkopolsko-Kujawska Lowland (5). Selective sweep of Wolbachia and parthenogenetic host genomes – the example of the weevil Eusomus ovulum

Most parthenogenetic weevil species are postulated to have originated via hybridization, but Wolbachia has also been speculated to play a role via the induction of parthenogenesis. Here, we examine the molecular diversity of Wolbachia and parthenogenetic host genomes. The host species studied here, Eusomus ovulum, is known to be exclusively parthenogenetic and triploid.
