Agency in first-semester university students’ career plans
2014
In this paper I examine expressions of agency in autobiographical narratives by Finnish speaking university students of Swedish. Students who write about themselves, their decisions and their career plans are simultaneously involved in (re)constructing their identities. The narratives often include references to “communities of practice” (Lave & Wenger 1991; Wenger 1998) that the students consider as significant, and whose membership they see as something worth dreaming of. These kinds of first-person stories can be regarded as important as far as identity formation is concerned (Sfard & Prusak 2005). The narratives can help in building a bridge between the narrator’s past, the present and …

Esteitä opintojen tiellä : opintojen seisahtumisen syyt ja taustat
2011
Tämän tutkielman tarkoitus on selvittää, mitkä tekijät vaikeuttavat ja hidastavat opintojen sujuvaa etenemistä Jyväskylän yliopistossa. Tutkimuksen ensisijainen tarkoitus on selvittää syitä, jotka johtavat siihen, ettei osalle läsnä olevaksi ilmoittautuneista opiskelijoista kerry lukuvuoden aikana lainkaan opintoja, mutta se valottaa yleisemminkin opintojen kulkuun vaikuttavia tekijöitä. Selvitystä varten kerättiin kaksi kyselyaineistoa. Ensimmäisen perusjoukon muodostivat lukuvuodelle 2007–2008 läsnä oleviksi opiskelijoiksi Jyväskylän yliopistoon ilmoittautuneet perustutkinto-opiskelijat, jotka eivät kyseisenä lukuvuotena suorittaneet lainkaan tiedekuntien tutkintovaatimuksissa kandidaatti…
Tracer migration in crystalline rock : application to geological barriers of nuclear waste storage
2016
This work deals with transport of radionuclides in the geosphere. The subject is investigated through characterisation of water conducting fractures, determining of rock transport properties and development of new methods for characterising geological samples. Here, as is often the case, radionuclide transport is investigated indirectly by characterising the structures, where the transport takes place, and directly by measuring transport properties in the gas phase. First water conducting fractures of three different types and the rock matrix surrounding them were analysed through rock samples from Olkiluoto. The analysis was done using X-ray tomography, the 14C-PMMA autoradiography techniq…

MIGRATION OF THE HIGHLY EDUCATED: EVIDENCE FROM RESIDENCE SPELLS OF UNIVERSITY GRADUATES*
2011
We examine the inter-regional migration of university graduates from 1991 to 2003 in Finland. The results show that time matters: two-years before and during the graduation year the hazard rates of migration increase, and then decrease thereafter. Although university graduates are particularly mobile, we find that most of them do not move from their region of studies within 10 years after graduation. The out-migration, i.e., brain drain, is much higher among graduates in the more peripheral universities than in the growth centers (Helsinki in particular). Migration is also substantially more likely for those studying away from the home region than for those studying at home. peerReviewed
