Light Propagation in Heterogeneous Opal-Based Photonic Crystals

2006

Ballistic light propagation in the heterogeneous photonic crystals based on the thin triple-film opal have been studied in the wavelength range of low order photonic bandgaps. Since the scattered light experiences the diffraction attenuation, the spectra and the angle diagrams of the transmitted and forward scattered light have been used to identify the effect of heterostructuring.

<strong>First record of <em>Megacydnus</em> <em>secundus</em> J. A. Lis, 2002, a representative of Afrotropical endemic…

2014

The Cydnidae (Hemiptera: Heteroptera: Pentatomoidea) is a true bug family with almost 700 species distributed worldwide (Lis 1996, 1999, 2006). These bugs usually dig in the ground (e.g., sand, soil, litter) and, therefore, are commonly known as the burrower bugs or burrowing bugs. Digging in the ground is possible because of several morphological adaptations, including well-developed tibial combs (Lis and Schaefer 2005), coxal combs (Lis 2010), and strong hair-like and peg-like setae on the head margins in larval and adult stages (Lis and Pluot-Sigwalt 2002) (see: Fig. 1A).

What a Friend We Have in Facebook : Norwegian Christian Churches’ Use of Social Media

2021

This study examines how Christian churches in Norway use social media. The key finding is that the churches do not take extensive advantage of the opportunities for two-way communication offered by the platforms, but primarily use their social media channels to promote church activities or broadcast content without inviting a dialogue. Based on the churches’ own stated appreciation for building relationships, as well as existing research from media and communication studies, media and religion studies, and studies within strategic communication, this article argues for a stronger focus on the ritual and relational aspects of online communication from the church organizations. BOMBYLIIDAE (Diptera) FROM LAMPEDUSA ISLAND

2011

The authors report new records of Bombyliidae (Diptera) for Lampedusa Island discovered during field investigations carried out for a broader research project in the island. Data are updated to July 2010. Four species of Bombyliidae new for Lampedusa have been found, one of which has not been recorded for Sicilan dipterofauna. The present data bring to 60 the species of Diptera reported for Lampedusa Island.

Hierarchies of probabilistic and team FIN-learning

2001

AbstractA FIN-learning machine M receives successive values of the function f it is learning and at some moment outputs a conjecture which should be a correct index of f. FIN learning has two extensions: (1) If M flips fair coins and learns a function with certain probability p, we have FIN〈p〉-learning. (2) When n machines simultaneously try to learn the same function f and at least k of these machines output correct indices of f, we have learning by a [k,n]FIN team. Sometimes a team or a probabilistic learner can simulate another one, if their probabilities p1,p2 (or team success ratios k1/n1,k2/n2) are close enough (Daley et al., in: Valiant, Waranth (Eds.), Proc. 5th Annual Workshop on C…

An exact method for graph coloring

2006

International audience; We are interested in the graph coloring problem. We propose an exact method based on a linear-decomposition of the graph. The complexity of this method is exponential according to the linearwidth of the entry graph, but linear according to its number of vertices. We present some experiments performed on literature instances, among which COLOR02 library instances. Our method is useful to solve more quickly than other exact algorithms instances with small linearwidth, such as mug graphs. Moreover, our algorithms are the first to our knowledge to solve the COLOR02 instance 4-Inser_3 with an exact method.
