Infliximab to treat Crohn's disease: an update
2011
Abstract: Crohn’s disease (CD) is a chronic inflammatory disease of the gastrointestinal tract characterized by recurring flares followed by periods of inactive disease and remission. The etiology is unknown, although the common opinion is that the disease arises from a disordered immune response to the gut contents in genetically predisposed individuals. Infliximab (IFX), a chimeric immunoglobulin G1 monoclonal antibody to tumor necrosis factor, has dramatically changed the approach to managing patients with CD and improving their treatment, by achieving treatment goals, such as mucosal healing, and decreasing the need for hospitalizations and surgeries. This review provides an update on e…
Poplar rotation coppice at a trace element-contaminated phytomanagement site: A 10-year study revealing biomass production, element export and impact…
2019
Abstract Growing lignocellulosic crops on marginal lands could compose a substantial proportion of future energy resources. The potential of poplar was explored, by devising a field trial of two hectares in 2007 in a metal-contaminated site to quantify the genotypic variation in the growth traits of 14 poplar genotypes grown in short-rotation coppice and to assess element transfer and export by individual genotypes. Our data led us to conclusions about the genotypic variations in poplar growth on a moderately contaminated site, with the Vesten genotype being the most productive. This genotype also accumulated the least amounts of trace elements, whereas the Trichobel genotype accumulated up…
Two-Stage Anaerobic Digestion of Energy Crops: Methane Production, Nitrogen Mineralisation and Heavy Metal Mobilisation
2006
Energy crops (willow, sugar beet and grass silage) were digested in pilot scale two-stage anaerobic digesters. The specific methane yields obtained were 0.16, 0.38 and 0.39 m3 kg(-1) added volatile solids (VSadded) for willow, sugar beet and grass, respectively, corresponding to yearly gross energy yields of 15, 53 and 26 megawatt-hours (MWh) per hectare. With grass and sugar beets as substrate, 84-85% of the harvestable methane was obtained within 30 days. In pilot scale two-stage digestion of willow and sugar beet, 56 and 85% of the laboratory scale methane yields were obtained, but digestion of grass in two-stage reactors yielded 5% more methane than digestion in laboratory scale complet…
Head-to-tail connected double calix[4]arenes
1997
New macrotricyclic compounds consisting of two calix[4]arene substructures connected by aliphatic chains of various length (three to five carbon atoms) between two oppositep-positions and two distal phenolic oxygens have been synthesized. Starting withp-tert-butyl-calix[4]arene, two O-protected phenolic units are attachedvia ether links in 1,3-position by reaction with the corresponding tosylates. After deprotection, the new calix[4]arene is formed by fragment condensation with 2,6-bisbromomethylated 4-alkylphenols. The structure of one example (8c) has been confirmed by single crystal X-ray analysis. Both calixarene parts assume the cone conformation, a molecule of acetonitrile being inclu…
Dimeric capsules of tetraurea calix[4]arenes. MD simulations and X-ray structure, a comparison
2002
The single crystal X-ray structure of a homodimer of a tetra(tolylurea) calix[4]arene including a tetraethylammonium cation as guest shows an expansion of the capsule and a distortion of its shape, in comparison to the structure of a similar dimer with an encapsulated benzene molecule. Thus, only 8 of 16 possible hydrogen bonds are present in the hydrogen bonded belt holding together the two hemispheres. The encapsulated cation is disordered over two equivalent positions with two methyl groups pointing to the equator, while two methyl groups pointing to the poles form CH–π interactions with the inner surfaces of the calixarene cavities. MD simulations are in agreement with the distorted X-r…
Fiction or death: Novels of the Children of the Detained-disappeared as Vehicles for Mourning
2014
Multiple catenanes based on tetraloop derivatives of calix[4]arenes
2009
Abstract Four novel tetraarylurea calix[4]arenes ( 4a – d ) have been synthesized, substituted by ω-alkenyloxy residues in 3,5-positions of the arylurea residues. The eight alkenyl groups were pairwise connected by olefin metathesis and subsequent hydrogenation. The ring-closure reaction was carried out with heterodimers exclusively formed by 4 with a tetratosylurea calix[4]arene 1 , which serves as a template in this reaction step. The potential trans-cavity bridging is entirely suppressed in this way. Bis- and tetraloop calix[4]arenes cannot form dimers due to overlapping loops. However, they readily form heterodimers with open-chain tetraureas, as long as their urea residues can pass thr…
The structural plasticity of the C terminus of p21Cip1 is a determinant for target protein recognition.
2003
The cyclin-dependent kinase inhibitory protein p21(Cip1) might play multiple roles in cell-cycle regulation through interaction of its C-terminal domain with a defined set of cellular proteins such as proliferating cell nuclear antigen (PCNA), calmodulin (CaM), and the oncoprotein SET. p21(Cip1) could be described as an intrinsically unstructured protein in solution although the C-terminal domain adopts a well-defined extended conformation when bound to PCNA. However, the molecular mechanism of the interaction with CaM and the oncoprotein SET is not well understood, partly because of the lack of structural information. In this work, a peptide derived from the C-terminal domain of p21(Cip1) …
New Molecular Topologies by Fourfold Metathesis Reactions within a Hydrogen-Bonded Calix[4]arene Dimer
2003
A calix[4]arene tetrapentyl ether in the cone conformation substituted at its wide rim by four m-(omega-octenyloxy)phenyl urea groups forms hydrogen-bonded dimeric capsules in dichloromethane/benzene (95:5). Metathesis reaction with Grubbs' catalyst under high-dilution conditions (1.1 x 10(-4) M) followed by hydrogenation leads to a covalent connection of all the urea groups within a dimer. Three topologically different products may be expected in such a reaction: a bis[2]catenane, a doubly bridged monocatenane and a tetrabridged capsule. All three possible reaction products could be isolated in an overall yield up to 60 % for the separated and purified compounds. Their identification was b…
