Il pranzo di Babele. Misunderstanding nel film "Il pranzo di Babette"

2013

A photoswitchable helical peptide with light-controllable interface / transmembrane topology in lipidic membranes

2021

AbstractAccording to the three-step model, the spontaneous insertion and folding of helical transmembrane (TM) polypeptides into lipid bilayers is driven by three sequential equilibria: solution-to-membrane interface (MI) partition, unstructured-to-helical folding, and MI-to-TM helix insertion. However, understanding these three steps with molecular detail has been challenged by the lack of suitable experimental approaches to rapidly and reversibly perturb membrane-bound hydrophobic polypeptides out of equilibrium. Here, we report on a 24-residues-long hydrophobic α-helical polypeptide, covalently coupled to an azobenzene photoswitch (KCALP-azo), which displays a light-controllable TM/MI eq…

Effectiveness of Entrepreneurial Universities: Experiences and Challenges in Digital Era (A Systemic Approach)

2021

The modern world actively discusses the challenges that will lead to the Fourth Industrial Revolution. As the specialists assume, part of the jobs will be replaced by artificial intelligence. In addition, creation of completely new jobs is expected. As for the jobs that might be maintained in future, skills upgrading will be particularly important. In such a turbulent environment of economic development, universities, and in particular entrepreneurial universities, play a significant role. We think so as these universities have special structures that promote form a university-industry-government triple helix, reskilling and commercialization of new ideas, etc. Due to the above-mentioned fa…

Chromatographic fingerprint of the volatile fraction of rare Hedera helix honey and biomarkers identification

2018

Hedera helix (Irish ivy) honey is a very rare food product used in Ireland. The composition of the volatile fraction of this unique honey was studied for the first time using three different extraction procedures (SPE, USE and HS–SPME) and analyzed with gas chromatography and mass spectrometry. As expected, the use of combined techniques resulted in the identification of the detailed composition of honey volatiles. Identified constitutes belongs to the different chemical classes. The presence of 4(1H)-quinolinone, myrtenal and phenylacetonitrile was proposed as biomarkers of the botanical origin of ivy honey. Moreover, they are not widely widespread among honeys of different botanical origi…

A new metallothionein gene from the giant keyhole limpet Megathura crenulata.

2003

Abstract Metallothioneins (MTs) are small soluble proteins ubiquitously expressed in animals and plants. Different isoforms are present in deuterostomes and protostomes. They do not differ greatly in primary structure, but are clearly distinguishable. Here, I present the gene and the complete cDNA of a novel MT from the mollusk Megathura crenulata . This protein is closely related to the Cu-inducible MTs of the vineyard snail Helix pomatia , but has also some minor sequence features typical of Cd-inducible isoforms of H . pomatia and other molluscs. Overall, the deduced primary structure is similar to the known molluscan MTs, but in addition possesses an insertion of 5 amino acids not found…

HIF-1α induces MXI1 by alternate promoter usage in human neuroblastoma cells

2009

Adaptation to low oxygen conditions is essential for maintaining homeostasis and viability in oxygen-consuming multi-cellular tissues, including solid tumors. Central in these processes are the hypoxia-inducible transcription factors, HIF-1 and HIF-2, controlling genes involved in e.g. glucose metabolism and neovascularization. Tumor hypoxia and HIF expression have also been associated with a dedifferentiated phenotype and increased aggressiveness. In this report we show that the MAX interactor-1 (MXI1) gene is directly regulated by HIF proteins in neuroblastoma and breast cancer cells. HIF-binding and transactivation were detected within MXI1 gene regulatory sequences in the vicinity of th…

GUI Implementation of VCDtools, A Program to Analyze Computed Vibrational Circular Dichroism Spectra

2020

As computing power increases, vibrational circular dichroism (VCD) calculations on molecules of larger sizes and complexities become possible. At the same time, the spectra resulting from these computations become increasingly more cumbersome to analyze. Here, we describe the GUI implementation into the Amsterdam Density Functional (ADF) software package of VCDtools, a toolbox that provides a user-friendly means to analyze VCD spectra. Key features are the use of the generalized coupled oscillator analysis methods, as well as an easy visualization of the atomic electric and magnetic transition dipole moments which together provide detailed insight in the origin of the VCD intensity. Using s…
