Efficacy of switching between tumor necrosis factor-alfa inhibitors in psoriasis: results from the Italian Psocare registry

2014

Background: Some studies have shown that switching patients from one tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-alfa inhibitor to another may be beneficial when they have an inadequate response or an adverse event. Objective: We sought to assess the variables predicting the efficacy of the second TNF-alfa inhibitor in patients discontinuing the first TNF-alfa inhibitor. Methods: Data from all 5423 consecutive patients starting TNF-alfa inhibitor therapy for psoriasis between September 2005 and September 2010 who were included in the Italian Psocare registry were analyzed. Results: In 105 patients who switched to a second TNF-alfa inhibitor who had complete follow-up data, 75% improvement in the Psoriasis …

Long-term anti-TNF therapy and the risk of serious infections in a cohort of patients with rheumatoid arthritis: Comparison of adalimumab, etanercept…

2012

Objective: To evaluate the risk of serious infections (SIs) in RA patients receiving anti-TNF therapy on the basis of the data included in the GISEA register. METHODS: The study involved 2769 adult patients with long-standing RA (mean age 53.2±13.4years; mean disease duration 9.0±8.3years) enrolled in the GISEA register, who had been treated for at least 6months with TNF inhibitors or had discontinued therapy due to SI: 837 (30%) treated with infliximab (IFN), 802 (29%) with adalimumab (ADA), and 1130 (41%) with etanercept (ETN). RESULTS: 176 patients had experienced at least one of the 226 Sis during the 9years of treatment with an anti-TNF agent, an overall incidence of 31.8/1000 patient-…

Dystopia deconstructed: Applying the triple helix model to a failed utopia

2016

This study analyzes the failure of a literary utopian system—Veronica Roth's Divergent—drawing from difference, which the divergent and the factionless represent. The analysis of the causes and consequences of difference from a socioeconomic perspective reveals a system that the triple helix model can improve. The adapted model based on cooperation and knowledge transfer adds two connections to the three main axes: Universities (Erudite), Government (Abnegation), and Industry (Amity), and gives the divergent a key role: inter-faction coordinators. Following a review of European migration policies, the study explores the creation of a new faction for the factionless. Regarding innovation, th…

Mechanical and Structural Tuning of Reversible Hydrogen Bonding in Interlocked Calixarene Nanocapsules

2019

We present force probe molecular dynamics simulations of dimers of interlocked calixarene nanocapsules and study the impact of structural details and solvent properties on the mechanical unfolding pathways. The system consists of two calixarene "cups" that form a catenane structure via interlocked aliphatic loops of tunable length. The dimer shows reversible rebinding, and the kinetics of the system can be understood in terms of a two-state model for shorter loops (≤14 CH2 units) and a three-state model for longer loops (≥15 CH2 units). The various conformational states of the dimer are stabilized by networks of hydrogen bonds, the mechanical susceptibility of which can be altered by changi…

Revealing the correlation between real-space structure and chiral magnetic order at the atomic scale

2017

We image simultaneously the geometric, the electronic, and the magnetic structures of a buckled iron bilayer film that exhibits chiral magnetic order. We achieve this by combining spin-polarized scanning tunneling microscopy and magnetic exchange force microscopy (SPEX) to independently characterize the geometric as well as the electronic and magnetic structures of nonflat surfaces. This new SPEX imaging technique reveals the geometric height corrugation of the reconstruction lines resulting from strong strain relaxation in the bilayer, enabling the decomposition of the real-space from the electronic structure at the atomic level and the correlation with the resultant spin-spiral ground sta…

Functionalized Calix[8]arenes, Synthesis and Self-assembly on Graphite

2005

With the intention of building hollow tubular structures by self-assembly, we have designed and successfully synthesized a series of calix[8]arene derivatives. Their phenolic units were functionalized in p-position by various groups which are able to interact via hydrogen bonding or π−π stacking. Ethynyl, amide, urea, or imide links were chosen for the covalent attachment of these functional groups, to ensure the adjustment of an optimal distance for their interaction. Two different kinds of nanostructures self-assembled on a highly oriented pyrolytic graphite (HOPG) surface were found by scanning force microscopy:  parallel aligned nanorods in which the calixarene molecules are adsorbed ed…

Helix Inversion Controlled by Molecular Motors in Multistate Liquid Crystals.

2020

Unravelling the rules of molecular motion is a contemporary challenge that promises to support the development of responsive materials and is likely to enhance the understanding of functional motion. Advances in integrating light‐driven molecular motors in soft matter have led to the design and realization of chiral nematic (cholesteric) liquid crystals that can respond to light with modification of their helical pitch, and also with helix inversion. Under illumination, these chiral liquid crystals convert from one helical geometry to another. Here, a series of light‐driven molecular motors that feature a rich configurational landscape is presented, specifically which involves three stable …

Focusing System for a Non-Normal Incidence Pumped, Sub-10 nm TCE XRL

2008

An extended ray-tracing study of the main pumping pulse (MP) focusing optics was made in order to develop a transient collisionally excited (TCE) x-ray laser (XRL) set-up for sub 10 nm wavelength by using non-normal incidence pumping. The study takes into account limitations determined by the large beam dimensions of the high energy MP. A setup using two off-the-shelf spherical mirrors is proposed, corresponding to a possible realization at the PHELIX laser facility.
