Revision of Hermadion Kinberg, 1856, with a redescription of Hermadion magalhaensi Kinberg, 1856, Adyte hyalina (G.O. Sars, 1873) n. comb. and Neopol…
2010
Examination of all species previously referred to the genus Hermadion revealed that the type species, H. magalhaensi Kinberg, 1856, is the only valid species in the genus. H. magalhaensi is redescribed and its synonymy with Hermadion longicirratus Kinberg, 1856, Hermadion kerguelensis McIntosh, 1885, and Lagisca laevis Hartmann-Schroder, 1962, is discussed. The generic attribution of 12 species that had already been moved from Hermadion to other genera by earlier authors is confirmed. Following our re-examination four species are moved to other genera: Harmothoe ornatus (Hartman, 1967) n. comb., Harmothoe africanus (Hartman, 1974) n. comb., Adyte hyalina (G.O. Sars, 1873) n. comb., and Neop…
Evidence suggests an opportunistic entomophagous diet of the White Stork Ciconia ciconia in Sicily during breeding and post-breeding periods
2022
Insects are known to represent a critical part of the White Stork Ciconia ciconia diet throughout its breeding range. Yet, the composition of the diet in the storks breeding in the Mediterranean regions remains poorly explored. Here, we investigated the diet of a population of white storks from Sicily through pellets collected in 2003, 2007, and 2020. A total of 1,928 prey items were identified and classified into six categories. Insects dominated the diet in all years and represented 99.06% of the whole prey number. Two orders of insects were mainly consumed, namely Orthoptera, which were the most frequent prey, followed by Coleoptera. Within these, carabid beetles were dominant, followed …
Association between pain, central sensitization and anxiety in postherpetic neuralgia
2014
Background In postherpetic neuralgia (PHN), dorsal root ganglia neurons are damaged. According to the proposed models, PHN pain might be associated with nociceptive deafferentation, and peripheral (heat hyperalgesia) or central sensitization (allodynia). Methods In 36 PHN patients, afferent nerve fibre function was characterized using quantitative sensory testing and histamine-induced flare analysis. Psychological factors were evaluated with the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS), disease-related quality of life (QoL) with SF-36 and pain with the McGill questionnaire [pain rating index (PRI)]. The patients were also divided into subgroups according to the presence or absence of br…
Human surrogate models of neuropathic pain.
2005
Neuropathic pain is defined as pain initiated or caused by a primary lesion or dysfunction in the nervous system (Merskey and Bogduk, 1994). Current efforts to refine this definition focus on the terms ‘dysfunction’ and ‘nervous system’ with the intention to clarify that there has to be an identifiable lesion or disease process affecting the somatosensory system. Experimental models of neuropathic pain according to either one of these definitions are expected to imitate mechanisms of nerve damage within the peripheral or central parts of the somatosensory system and the ensuing processes of degeneration and regeneration. Whereas this approach to model the etiology and pathophysiology of the…
LO SPECCHIO DEI SASSONI DI DRESDA: Diritto Feudale. Introduzione, TRADUZIONE, Glossario. Vol.IV
2012
Food for flight: pre-migratory dynamics of the Lesser Kestrel Falco naumanni.
2014
Capsule The post-reproductive stage of Lesser Kestrel is crucial for migratory fuelling and survival. Aims To describe the summer pre-migratory ecology of the Lesser Kestrel in Sicily and review existing data in Southern Europe. Methods We identified the main summer roosts and then made roost counts every ten days from 2010 to 2012. We used case-sensitive modelling procedures to detect biases in counts (generalized linear mixed models), assess the annual population trends from 2005 to 2012 (TRends and Indices for Monitoring); and to model habitat preferences (generalized linear model). We sampled pellets to describe the birds’ diet during the peak month prior to migration. Results We discov…
Per uno studio dei bozzetti della Fabrique neuve de Cortaillod (XVIII-XIX secolo)
2019
Partendo dall’analisi di un gruppo di bozzetti della Fabrique neuve de Cortaillod (XVIII-XIX secolo), l’autrice prende in esame il processo di interazione tra moda e sviluppo industriale nell’Europa del secondo Settecento, attraverso l’approfondimento dei processi di adattamento dei modelli orientali al gusto europeo e delle tecniche di stampa adottate in Europa Starting from the analysis of a group of sketches of the Fabrique neuve de Cortaillod (18th-19th century), the author examines the process of interaction between fashion and industrial development in Europe in the second half of the 18th century, through an in-depth study of the processes of adaptation of oriental models to European…

Reducing the burden of Herpes Zoster in Italy.
2015
Herpes Zoster (HZ) is a viral disease with painful neuro-dermatologic manifestations. Incidence increases with age. In Italy, the estimated incidence is 6.3 cases/1000 person/year; hospital admissions are less than 2%, 69% in patients aged over 65 years. The most frequent complication of HZ is Post-Herpetic Neuralgia (PHN) characterized by metameric pain, allodynia, and hyperalgesia. In Italy 20.6% and 9.2% of HZ patients experience PHN after 3 and 6 months, respectively. Available antiviral and analgesic treatments are relatively unsatisfactory in reducing pain and length of the disease. Prevention has recently become possible with the live attenuated vaccine Oka/Merck. Clinical studies sh…
Secondary hyperalgesia to punctate mechanical stimuli
1999
Tissue injury induces enhanced pain sensation to light touch and punctate stimuli in adjacent, uninjured skin (secondary hyperalgesia). Whereas hyperalgesia to light touch (allodynia) is mediated by A-fibre low-threshold mechanoreceptors, hyperalgesia to punctate stimuli may be mediated by A- or C-fibre nociceptors. To disclose the relative contributions of A- and C-fibres to the hyperalgesia to punctate stimuli, the superficial radial nerve was blocked by pressure at the wrist in nine healthy subjects. Secondary hyperalgesia was induced by intradermal injection of 40 microg capsaicin, and pain sensitivity in adjacent skin was tested with 200 micron diameter probes (35-407 mN). The progress…
