A sizing approach for stand-alone hybrid photovoltaic-wind-battery systems: A Sicilian case study

2018

Abstract Solar and wind energy are the two most available renewable energy resources in the world. In this paper, a high-resolution analysis that allows sizing a hybrid photovoltaic-wind turbine-battery banks has been carried out. The analysis aims to minimize the annualized cost of the systems satisfying two reliability constraints. The solution has been obtained numerically by means of an iterative technique. The decision variables are the photovoltaic area, wind turbine radius, and battery capacity. A high-resolution model, based on fuzzy logic inference system, has been developed to evaluate the number of active occupants and the domestic electricity consumption. In order to allow a mor…

Placenta-derived CD95 ligand causes liver damage in hemolysis, elevated liver enzymes, and low platelet count syndrome.

2004

Background & Aims: The HELLP (hemolysis, elevated liver enzymes, low platelets) syndrome is a life-threatening complication during pregnancy. The associated liver disease may be severe, and maternal hepatic complications may progress to the point that transplantation becomes necessary. CD95 (APO-1, Fas)-mediated apoptosis of liver cells is one of the major pathogenic mechanisms during liver disease. The interaction of CD95 with its ligand, CD95L(FasL), induces apoptosis and thus the source of the death-inducing ligand is critical for understanding the pathomechanism of liver damage involving the CD95-system. Methods: Sera from HELLP patients were analyzed and used in cell culture experiment…

Green conditions for the Suzuki reaction using microwave irradiation and a new HNT- supported ionic liquid-like phase (HNT-SILLP) catalyst

2014

A new catalytic system based on modified halloysite nanotubes was employed in the Suzuki reaction under microwave irradi- ation. A set of solvents, times and bases was screened and the best experimental conditions were obtained when the reactions were carried out for 10 min in water–ethanol at 120 °C in presence of K2CO3 as base. Good recyclability was observed. The new catalytic system was employed using either 1 mol% or 0.1 mol%. The palladium catalyst displayed good activity, allowing the synthesis of several biphenyl compounds in high yield working with only 0.1 mol% palladium loading. The application of mi- crowave irradiation decreased the reaction time and also improved conversion wi…

AISF position paper on liver disease and pregnancy.

2016

Abstract The relationship between liver disease and pregnancy is of great clinical impact. Severe liver disease in pregnancy is rare; however, pregnancy-related liver disease is the most frequent cause of liver dysfunction during pregnancy and represents a severe threat to foetal and maternal survival. A rapid differential diagnosis between liver disease related or unrelated to pregnancy is required in women who present with liver dysfunction during pregnancy. This report summarizes the recommendation of an expert panel established by the Italian Association for the Study of the Liver (AISF) on the management of liver disease during pregnancy. The article provides an overview of liver disea…

Further studies on the AB0-typing of ancient bones

1972

This paper deals with the AB0-typing of bone material from the 14th century. From 151 femora, 126 gave a positive reaction, the rest did not react at all. 53.9% A, 16.7% B, 23.8% H and 5.6% AB are the respective results. Some hypotheses suggesting relations between infectious diseases and AB0 blood groups are discussed. The AB0 distribution seems to point to an association with plague and smallpox.

Guinea Worm Infection in Dogs: A Case of Reverse Zoonosis that Impedes Dracunculus medinensis Eradication

2020

Dracunculus medinensis or Guinea worm was largely considered an exclusive human parasite. The adult female D. medinensis (up to 100 cm long and 1.5–2.0 mm thick) inhabits and moves in the connective tissue, including the skin. Large females protrude from the skin causing unusual and unambiguous signs. Hosts become infected by drinking water containing the crustacean intermediate hosts (cyclopoid copepods known as water fleas) infected with Guinea worm L3 larvae. After years of a successful eradication campaign (focused mainly on preventing humans from drinking unfiltered or untreated water), Guinea worm transmission has been eliminated from most, but not all, countries. An unforeseeable hig…

Textile and tile pattern design automatic cataloguing using detection of the plane symmetry group

2004

We present an integrated management system of pattern design for the textile and tile industries providing automatic cataloguing capabilities based on the application of the scientific theory of symmetry groups. To do this, a process of analysis is performed which starts from an initial image of the decorative element, which in turn is subjected to a number of segmentation and labelling operators that allow to detect the objects present in the image. These objects are vectorized, compared, and their isometries obtained; subsequently they are grouped and the isometries of the groups of objects detected. Finally, a composition analysis is carried out that, on the basis of the repetitions and …

Testowanie psychologicznego (GAM) modelu agresji na próbie mężczyzn. Uzależnienie od substancji, stosowanie sterydów, cechy osobowości, wolna wola i …

2020

Do pomiaru pięciu czynników osobowości wykorzystano dziesięciopunktowy spis osobowości (TIPI). Do pomiaru orientacji czasowej wykorzystano Kwestionariusz Percepcji Czasu Zimbardo (ZTPI), a do pomiaru siły woli wykorzystano Kwestionariusz Kontroli Start-Stop. W analizach statystycznych zastosowano analizę regresji hierarchicznej i modelowanie równań struktur…
