Continuous design control for machine learning in certified medical systems
2022
AbstractContinuous software engineering has become commonplace in numerous fields. However, in regulating intensive sectors, where additional concerns need to be taken into account, it is often considered difficult to apply continuous development approaches, such as devops. In this paper, we present an approach for using pull requests as design controls, and apply this approach to machine learning in certified medical systems leveraging model cards, a novel technique developed to add explainability to machine learning systems, as a regulatory audit trail. The approach is demonstrated with an industrial system that we have used previously to show how medical systems can be developed in a con…
Free boundary methods and non-scattering phenomena
2021
We study a question arising in inverse scattering theory: given a penetrable obstacle, does there exist an incident wave that does not scatter? We show that every penetrable obstacle with real-analytic boundary admits such an incident wave. At zero frequency, we use quadrature domains to show that there are also obstacles with inward cusps having this property. In the converse direction, under a nonvanishing condition for the incident wave, we show that there is a dichotomy for boundary points of any penetrable obstacle having this property: either the boundary is regular, or the complement of the obstacle has to be very thin near the point. These facts are proved by invoking results from t…

Vuorovaikutteisuus Suomen luonnonsuojeluliiton Facebook-viestinnässä
2016
Tämän tutkimuksen tarkoituksena on kuvata ja ymmärtää Suomen vanhimman ympäristöjärjestön, Suomen luonnonsuojeluliiton Facebook-viestintää sen aktiivisuuden, viestintäfunktioiden ja niiden aiheuttamien reaktioiden kautta. Tutkimuksessa käytettiin kahta aineistoa, Luonnonsuojeluliiton Facebook-tilapäivityksiä kommentteineen ja tykkäyksineen kuukauden ajalta vuosilta 2010 ja 2015. Samalla saatiin siis myös kuva siitä, miten Luonnonsuojeluliiton viestintä on tutkittavien seikkojen osalta muuttunut viidessä vuodessa. Aineisto analysoitiin sisällönanalyysin ja aineiston määrällisen jäsentämisen kautta. Viestintäfunktioita tutkittaessa käytettiin apuna aiemman tutkimuksen luomaa luokittelukehikko…
CitySearcher: A City Search Engine For Interests
2017
We introduce CitySearcher, a vertical search engine that searches for cities when queried for an interest. Generally in search engines, utilization of semantics between words is favorable for performance improvement. Even though ambiguous query words have multiple semantic meanings, search engines can return diversified results to satisfy different users' information needs. But for CitySearcher, mismatched semantic relationships can lead to extremely unsatisfactory results. For example, the city Sale would incorrectly rank high for the interest shopping because of semantic interpretations of the words. Thus in our system, the main challenge is to eliminate the mismatched semantic relationsh…
Optimal Flight Path Determination in Turbulent Air: A Modified EKF Approach
2017
By using the Extended Kalman Filter an accurate path following in turbulent air is performed. The procedure employs simultaneously two different EKFs: the first one estimates disturbances, the second one affords to determine the necessary controls displacements for rejecting those ones. To tune the EKFs an optimization algorithm has been designed to automatically determine Process Noise Covariance and Measurement Noise Covariance matrices. The first filter, by using instrumental measurements gathered in turbulent air, estimates wind components. The second one obtains command laws able to follow the desired flight path. To perform this task aerodynamic coefficients have been modified. Such a…
Full- and reduced-order filter design for discrete-time T-S fuzzy systems with time-varying delay
2012
This paper is focused on the problem of ℋ ∞ filtering for a class of discrete-time T-S fuzzy time-varying delay systems. Our interest is how to design full- and reduced-order filters that guarantee the filtering error system to be asymptotically stable with a prescribed ℋ ∞ performance. Sufficient conditions for the obtained filtering error system are proposed by applying an input-output approach and a two-term approximation method, which is employed to approximate the time-varying delay. The corresponding full and reduced-order filter design is cast into a convex optimization problem, which can be efficiently solved by standard numerical algorithms.

An EKF Based Method for Path Following in Turbulent Air
2017
An innovative use of the Extended Kalman Filter (EKF) is proposed to perform both accurate path following and adequate disturbance rejection in turbulent air. The tuned up procedure employs simultaneously two different EKF: the first one estimates gust disturbances, the second one estimates modified aircraft parameters. The first filter, by using measurements gathered in turbulent air, estimates both aircraft states and wind components. The second one, by using the estimated disturbances, obtains command laws that are able to reject disturbances. The predictor of the second EKF uses the estimated wind components to solve motion equations in turbulent air. Besides a set of unknown stability …
