Enormous amounts of fiber sludge are generated annually by the pulp industry as a by-product. As a cellulose-rich material, its current usage, mainly as fuel, is inefficient from a material efficiency point of view. This work studied the utilization of fiber sludge from a Finnish and a Swedish pulp mill as a potential feedstock to produce levulinic acid, a valuable platform chemical. The conversion experiments of fiber sludge to levulinic acid were performed in a microwave reactor with a mixture of H2SO4 and Lewis acid as the catalyst. Background & Aims: T-cell–mediated fulminant hepatitis is a potentially life-threatening event for which the underlying pathogenic mechanisms are not fully understood. Here, we demonstrate a key regulatory role of IL-28A in T-cell–mediated hepatitis. Methods: We cloned the murine IL-28A gene by reverse-transcription polymerase chain reaction, assessed the effects of recombinant IL-28A, and generated IL-28A–transgenic mice. Introduction: This systematic review of therapeutic drug monitoring (TDM) identifies three long-acting injectable (LAI) risperidone formulations. Areas covered: Limited data is available on two formulations (RBP-7000 and in Situ Microparticle), but 20 TDM articles on the microsphere formulation were found. We report on a 4-year-old girl with severe developmental delay, absent speech, and chromosome 22q13.3 deletion (Phelan-McDermid syndrome), karyotype 46,XX.ish del(22)(q13.31qter)(ARSA-,N85A-,SHANK3-). At the age of 3 years, she needed an emergency liver transplantation because of fulminant hepatic failure, most likely caused by hyperacute autoimmune hepatitis triggered by a viral infection. This is the second report of a patient with 22q13.3 deletion and fulminant liver failure. Stimulation of peroxisomal palmitoyl-CoA oxidase activity by ciprofibrate in hepatic cell lines: comparative studies in Fao, MH1C1 and HepG2 cells.

The response of two rat cell lines, Fao and MH1C1, and one human cell line, HepG2, to the peroxisome proliferator ciprofibrate, was studied. Using a fluorometric assay for palmitoyl-CoA oxidase, the dose- and time-dependent increase of this enzymatic activity was determined. From the lowest concentration (100 microM) stimulation is evident in the two rat cell lines. In the Fao line, the activity was stimulated reaching a seven-fold increase over the control level at 250 microM after 72 h of treatment. Loss of response of carnitine palmitoyltransferase I to okadaic acid in transformed hepatic cells

The specific activity of carnitine palmitoyltransferase I (CPT-I) was similar in mitochondria isolated from rat Fao and human HepG2 hepatoma cells and from rat hepatocytes, but almost twofold higher in permeabilized hepatoma cells than in permeabilized hepatocytes. Short-term exposure to okadaic acid induced a ca. 80% stimulation of CPT-I in hepatocytes, whereas no significant response of the enzyme from hepatoma cells was evident. Thus, the high CPT-I activity displayed by hepatoma cells may be reached by hepatocytes upon challenge to okadaic acid. With this technique, it is possible for the first time to indirectly display the fine orbital vessels such as the ophthalmic artery and its branches, the central retinal artery, the posterior ciliary artery, and the lacrimal artery. Also, the display of venous structures such as the superior ophthalmic vein, the vortex vein, and the central retinal vein is possible.
