Fractal-structured multifocal intraocular lens

2017

[EN] In this work, we present a new concept of IOL design inspired by the demonstrated properties of reduced chromatic aberration and extended depth of focus of Fractal zone plates. A detailed description of a proof of concept IOL is provided. The result was numerically characterized, and fabricated by lathe turning. The prototype was tested in vitro using dedicated optical system and software. The theoretical Point Spread Function along the optical axis, computed for several wavelengths, showed that for each wavelength, the IOL produces two main foci surrounded by numerous secondary foci that partially overlap each other for different wavelengths. The result is that both, the near focus an…

Acyl-Chain Mismatch Driven Superlattice Arrangements in DPPC/DLPC/Cholesterol Bilayers

2010

Fluorescence and infrared spectroscopy and cholesterol oxidase activity were employed to investigate the effect of phosphatidylcholine (PC) acyl chain length mismatch on the lateral organizations of lipids in liquid-ordered dipalmitoyl-PC/dilauroyl-PC/cholesterol (DPPC/DLPC/CHOL) bilayers. Plots of steady-state fluorescence emission anisotropy of diphenylhexatriene (DPH) labeled PC (DPH-PC) embedded in the DPPC/DLPC/CHOL bilayers revealed significant peaks at several DPPC mole fractions (Y(DPPC)) when the cholesterol mole fraction (X(CHOL)) was fixed to particular values. Analogously, the DPH-PC anisotropy peaked at several critical X(CHOL)'s when Y(DPPC) was fixed. Acyl chain C-H and C hor…

Fulminantes Lungenödembei Malaria tropica

2003

HISTORY AND ADMISSION FINDINGS A 54-year-old man was admitted because of intermittent fever for 2 days. Ten days earlier he had returned from Kenya. He had not taken any antimalarial drugs prophylactically. INVESTIGATIONS Initial blood smears showed Plasmodium falciparum in 10.4% of erythrocytes. Laboratory tests indicated hyponatremia and disseminated intravascular coagulation. Also, laboratory markers of infection and hemolysis were clearly positive and accompanied by a low-grade normocyticanaemia. Chest radiograph showed the heart size to be at the upper limit of normal and no signs of congestion, pleural effusion or inflammatory infiltrates. Sonography demonstrated hepatosplenomegaly wi…

Robust stabilisation of 2D state-delayed stochastic systems with randomly occurring uncertainties and nonlinearities

2013

This paper is concerned with the state feedback control problem for a class of two-dimensional (2D) discrete-time stochastic systems with time-delays, randomly occurring uncertainties and nonlinearities. Both the sector-like nonlinearities and the norm-bounded uncertainties enter into the system in random ways, and such randomly occurring uncertainties and nonlinearities obey certain mutually uncorrelated Bernoulli random binary distribution laws. Sufficient computationally tractable linear matrix inequality–based conditions are established for the 2D nonlinear stochastic time-delay systems to be asymptotically stable in the mean-square sense, and then the explicit expression of the desired…

On the Electrostatic Component of the Adhesional Interaction between Solid Substrates and Langmuir Monolayers

1991

The work of adhesion between Langmuir monolayers and solid surfaces in a hydrophilic Langmuir-Blodgett configuration has been measured as function of the surface charge densities σ of the contacting surfaces. It was derived from the equilibrium meniscus height which was measured with the transfer fluorescence microscope. The surface charge density of the contacting surfaces was varied by changing the subphase pH. With both surfaces negatively charged (dimyristoylphosphatidylethanolamine onto SiO2-substrates) and low charge densities (σ < 1 e−/100 A2)) we observe a decrease of the adhesion with increasing charge density. At high charge densities (dimyristoylphosphatidic acid onto SiO2-substr…

Drivers, barriers and impacts of digitalisation in rural areas from the viewpoint of experts

2022

Abstract Context: The domain of rural areas, including rural communities, agriculture, and forestry, is going through a process of deep digital transformation. Digitalisation can have positive impacts on sustainability in terms of greater environmental control, and community prosperity. At the same time, it can also have disruptive effects, with the marginalisation of actors that cannot cope with the change. When developing a novel system for rural areas, requirements engineers should carefully consider the specific socio-economic characteristics of the domain, so that potential positive effects can be maximised, while mitigating negative impacts. Objective: The goal of this paper is to sup…

Stability of tacrolimus ophthalmic solution

2017

Purpose The stability of 0.3-mg/mL tacrolimus ophthalmic solution at different storage temperatures was studied. Methods A sterile ophthalmic solution of 0.3 mg/mL tacrolimus was prepared in triplicate under aseptic conditions by diluting tacrolimus in eye drops. Three aliquots of this solution were transferred into polypropylene bottles and stored at 25, 2–8, or −15 to −25 °C. Samples were collected immediately after preparation and at selected time points and assayed in triplicate using high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). Samples were also visually examined for macroscopic changes. The 0.3-mg/mL tacrolimus solution was also exposed to acidic treatment and heat to force its degr…

Core-Shell Arginine-Containing Chitosan Microparticles for Enhanced Transcorneal Permeation of Drugs

2019

Chitosan oligosaccharide (C) was functionalized with L-arginine (A) and short hydrocarbon chains (C-8) to design an amphiphilic copolymer, henceforth CAC(8), leading to microparticles (MPs) consisting of an arginine-decorated hydrophilic shell and inner hydrophobic domains allowing the encapsulation of high amount hydrophobic drugs such as sorafenib tosylate (>10% w/w). L-arginine side chains were selected in order to impart the final MPs enhanced transcorneal penetration properties, thus overcoming the typical biological barriers which hamper the absorption of drugs upon topical ocular administration. The mucoadhesive properties and drug release profile of the CAC(8) MPs (CAC(8)-MPs) were …

Drugs and Toxins Effects on the Liver

2011

Drug induced hepatotoxicity can be defined as a liver injury caused by drug or herbal medicines leading to liver test abnormalities or to a liver dysfunction with a reasonable exclusion of the other competing aetiologies. The liver has a central function in the metabolism of the xenobiotics, and as a result it may be susceptible to its toxic or idiosyncratic effects. While the overall incidence of drug induced liver injury (DILI) is infrequent (1 in 10.000 to 100.000 persons exposed), the impact is significant in the general population, with broad implications for patients, physicians, pharmaceutical industries and governmental regulatory agencies. DILI is the principle reason for the termi…

Microfibrillar polymeric ocular inserts for triamcinolone acetonide delivery.

2019

Abstract Despite eye drops generally represent the most convenient, simple and patient-friendly formulations to treat ocular diseases, they suffer from poor retention on the ocular surface and low drug bioavailability leading to the necessity of prolonged and continuous treatment over time. Therefore, ocular insert could represent an innovative way to benefit from ocular topical administration while minimizing all the relevant limitation related to this route of administration. Polymeric non-erodible mucoadhesive ocular inserts should be comfortable and should rapidly adhere on the ocular surface, remain in situ for prolonged period, assure a reproducible and controlled drug release as well…
