Fasciola hepatica : lithogenic capacity in experimentally infested rats and chemical determination of the main stone components

A study was done of the possible association between the development of common bile-duct stones and the presence of worms in rats experimentally infected with Fasciola hepatica. A total of 157 rats were individually infected with 20 metacercariae, and another 40 animals served as controls. The rats were dissected at 100, 200, 300, and 400 days postinfection (p.i.). A significant association was observed between the observation of stones and the presence of F. hepatica adults. Human fascioliasis infection: gender differences within school-age children from endemic areas of the Nile Delta, Egypt

Summary Several studies have reported a higher prevalence of infection for human fascioliasis among girls than among boys. To investigate this aspect further a sufficiently large data set was assembled comprising of 21 477 subjects with 932 positive cases. Subjects were primary school children covered by a control programme implemented by the Egyptian Ministry of Health and Population in the Nile Delta from 1988 to 2002. Intestinal helminth fauna of the South American sea lion Otaria flavescens and fur seal Arctocephalus australis from northern Patagonia, Argentina

AbstractWe report on the intestinal helminth fauna of 56 South American sea lions, Otaria flavescens, and 5 South American fur seals, Arctocephalus australis, from northern Patagonia, Argentina. A total of 97,325 helminth specimens were collected from sea lions. Relationship between diet and helminths in Gallotia caesaris (Sauria: Lacertidae)

Diet and helminth fauna were analysed in Gallotia caesaris, a small lacertid lizard endemic to El Hierro (Canary Islands, Spain) in order to study the evolutionary and functional relationships between the two traits. This species is omnivorous but consumed a high proportion (82.13%) of plant matter including not only seeds but also leaves and other vegetative parts. Helminth fauna included many helminth species typical of herbivorous reptiles. Both herbivory and helminth presence were higher than expected for a lizard of its size. AbstractThe helminth fauna of the wood mouse,Apodemus sylvaticus, in the Erro River valley (Navarre, Spain) was investigated from a total of 150 mice between February 2001 and July 2002. An overall prevalence of 90.7% was recorded and up to 14 helminth species identified. Gastrointestinal helminths of Risso's dolphin Grampus griseus from the Western Mediterranean.

The gastrointestinal helminth fauna of 17 Risso's dolphins Grampus griseus (Cuvier, 1812) from the Western Mediterranean was analysed. Five helminth species were found. Adults and juveniles of Hadwenius delamurei were collected from the duodenum of 7 animals. Adults were located significantly more anteriorly than juveniles, which is compatible with a previous hypothesis that species of Hadwe- nius undergo an ontogenetic migration towards the anterior duodenum. Anophthalmia and microphthalmia (A/M) are early-eye-development anomalies resulting in absent or small ocular globes, respectively. A/M anomalies occur in syndromic or nonsyndromic forms. They are genetically heterogeneous, some mutations in some genes being responsible for both anophthalmia and microphthalmia. Sedaghatian congenital lethal metaphyseal chondrodysplasia—observations in a second Iranian family and histopathological studies

In 1980, Sedaghatian described in two brothers and one sister a neonatally lethal disorder associated with slight rhizomelic limb shortness, mild platyspondyly, and severe metaphyseal dysplasia. Here data are presented on another Iranian infant with the Sedaghatian syndrome who died on day 4 and was found to have histologic evidence of severe epimetaphyseal dysplasia. The occurrence in children of both sexes in one instance, born to normal parents who were first cousins, and currently apparent confinement of the disorder to Iranians suggests that the Sedaghatian syndrome is an autosomal recessive trait with high gene frequency in Iranians.
