Elicitation and evaluation of zoom gestures for touchless interaction with desktop displays

2019

Touchless gestural interaction has been widely studied and adopted in many contexts. Furthermore, the growing availability of low-cost enabling devices, such as Kinect or Leap Motion, boosted up the interest in such interaction both for commercial and scientific purposes, both for large public displays and for personal displays. The problem of choosing the right touchless gesture for the right action is thus still an open issue, depending on several aspects, such as context, purpose, users' culture, etc. In this work, we first present the results of a gesture elicitation study that allowed us to identify a set of touchless gestures for performing zoom actions while interacting with desktop …

The egoistic approach to parallel process migration into heterogeneous workstation network

1996

Abstract A new approach to the allocation of processes in a distributed system is discussed. The proposed solution deals with process migration into heterogeneous systems by means of a strategy that delegates the individual parallel applications to manage the migration of their processes by themselves, on the basis of their own performance objectives. This approach is discussed in opposition to the global scheduling based one, and the load balancing objective is pursued as an effect of the optimization of individual applications. A new performance evaluation criterion is introduced that consists in monitoring the delays that occur when two parallel processes run towards a common synchroniza…

A study of temporal estimation from the perspective of the Mental Clock Model.

2009

M. Cardaci's (2000) Mental Clock Model maintains that a task requiring a low mental workload is associated with an acceleration of perceived time, whereas a task requiring a high mental workload is associated with a deceleration. The authors examined the predictions of this model in a musical listening condition in which musical pieces were audible in several structural complexities. To measure the effects of musical complexity on time estimation, the authors used retrospective and prospective time-estimation paradigms. For the retrospective paradigm, the authors invited participants to listen to a musical piece and then estimate its duration. For the prospective paradigm, the authors invit…

Academic Workload, Well-Being and Workaholism in Italian Universities

2017

As suggested by Romainville (1996), universities are the only organizations focussed on dual core functions of knowledge creation and knowledge transmission through the processes of research and teaching. University academic staff do complex work in an increasingly demanding environment, so the workaholism risk seems to be higher than in other professions. Although this type of work behavior seems to be culturally approved by the academic community, it constitutes an element of risk for the health and well being of those who have chosen this type of profession on the basis of different expectations, especially in pace, amount, and independence at work. A very interesting line of research (w…

Visceral adiposity index is associated with histological findings and high viral load in patients with chronic hepatitis C due to genotype 1.

2010

Metabolic factors have been associated with liver damage in patients with genotype 1 chronic hepatitis C (G1 CHC). We tested visceral adiposity index (VAI), a new marker of adipose dysfunction in G1 CHC, patients to assess its association with host and viral factors and its link to both histological findings and sustained virological response (SVR). Two hundred thirty-six consecutive G1 CHC patients were evaluated by way of liver biopsy and anthropometric and metabolic measurements, including insulin resistance (IR), homeostasis model assessment (HOMA), and VAI using waist circumference, body mass index, triglycerides, and high-density lipoprotein cholesterol. All biopsies were scored by on…

Leakage in root canal system during and after treatment: A review

2017

During and after a canal treatment any ingress of germs in the pulp space should be avoid because they are responsible for pulpal and periradicular diseases. Often this treatment is performed in more than one visit and amongst those visits a temporary restoration should impede the re-infection. Initially a pre-treatment (build-up) is required in order to prevent fluid leakage and allow a better isolation by rubber dam and a stabilised clamp. Several restorative materials are on the market and a correct choice is crucial to avoid failure considering several factors such as canal dressing medication, number of day between visits, extension of restoration, occlusal load, presence of parafuncti…

Performance organizzativa e carichi di lavoro nello studio sui Consorzi Regionali di Bonifica

2022

The objective of our research was to verify, through an empirical survey, the measuring of the relationship between workload and performance within complex public organizations. Starting from the reference literature the research approach adopted was of a mixed type characterized by an exploratory design and the analysis of a case study. #e data collection was carried out through documentary sources and some structured interviews administered to the management and the various sector heads of reclamation consortium studied. Based on the interviews carried out, a relationship between the measurement of the workload and the performance within the institution examined is inferred, because there…

A wholesale electricity market framework with bilateral trading

2011

An agent-based simulation model for a hybrid power market structure is presented. A bilateral transaction mechanism is combined with a uniform-pricing auction settlement in order to isolate the impact of medium-term bilateral contracts on market power and spot prices in a competitive wholesale market setting. First we describe the negotiation method for bilateral trading of energy and then introduce a new approach for bidding in the DA market based on the load duration curve. We find that, despite the conventional concerns, the foreclosure ef- fect produced by the bilateral agreement between a generation and a retail business will not necessarily lead to higher prices, and will be manifeste…
