The chapter presents a brief excursus between the opposing interpretations of the mafia phenomenon and in particular of the extorted one. It then takes into consideration the …
On the origins of body size dimorphism in primates
1986
Among many explanations concerning the origins of dimorphism in Primates, none has received as little attention as the differences in energy requirements of the two sexes. It is hypothesised that among Primates, a common strategy for overcoming the extra metabolic load of pregnency and lactation experienced by females during the greater part of their adult lifetimes, is for them to reduce their bodyweights relative to those of males. Such a strategy allows the mother plus infant combination to weight approximately as much as the species target weight or slightly less, preserving the balance between the species and the environment.
Shakedown design of structures under dynamic loading
2010
The optimal (minimum volume) design of elastic plastic structures under static and dynamic loads is studied. The minimum volume design is reached accounting for different resistance limits: it is required that the optimal structure simultaneously satisfies the elastic shakedown limit and the instantaneous collapse limit, or alternatively the elastic and the plastic shakedown limits, adopting for each limit condition a suitably chosen load combination and some appropriate load amplifiers. The load combinations are characterized by the presence of fixed loads, quasi-statical cyclic loads and dynamic (seismic) loads. Reference is made to the Italian Code related to structural analysis and desi…
Shakedown Under Thermomechanical Loads
2014
A shakedown theory for elastic–perfectly plastic structures subjected to thermomechanical loads varying within a given range is outlined under the assumption of temperature-dependent yield stress, but temperature-independent elastic moduli and thermal expansion coefficient are considered. Inertia and creep effects, along with thermal coupling phenomena, are considered negligible. A nonstandard constitutive model is used in which a central role is played by the yield function-assumed convex in the stress–temperature space. The inherent flow mechanism obeys the normality rule and includes, beside the standard plastic strain rates, an extra scalar variable work conjugate of the temperature, co…
Buckling of Elastic Beam Under Unilateral Constraint
1988
ABSTRACT A criterion is proposed to calculate the critical load of a continuous beam under unilateral constraint. The beam is assumed to be built in at the ends and to rest on equally spaced elastic supports, that have equal stiffness. The problem is solved by determining the length of the half-wave of the buckled shape, the number of supports involved, and their position with respect to the end of the half-wave. The analysis model thus defined is determined in relation to the geometry of the beam and to the ratio between the stiffness of the supports and the shearing stiffness of the generic span. It is shown that there exists a limiting value of this ratio, below which the critical load i…
Parameter tuning for nacelle-based passive structural control of a spar-type floating wind turbine
2013
This paper deals with the modeling and parameter tuning of a spar-type floating wind turbine with a tuned mass damper (TMD) installed in nacelle. Firstly, a mathematical model for the system surge-heave-pitch motion is established based on first principles. Secondly, different parameter tuning methods are adopted to find the optimal TMD parameters for load reduction. Thirdly, nonlinear wind turbine simulations with different designs are conducted under different wind and wave conditions. The results show that TMD with small spring and damping coefficients will help to produce much load reduction in above rated condition. However, it may deteriorate system performance when the turbine is wor…
Influence of custom-made and prefabricated insoles before and after an intense run
2017
[EN] Each time the foot contacts the ground during running there is a rapid deceleration that results in a shock wave that is transmitted from the foot to the head. The fatigue of the musculoskeletal system during running may decrease the ability of the body to absorb those shock waves and increase the risk of injury. Insoles are commonly prescribed to prevent injuries, and both custom-made and prefabricated insoles have been observed to reduce shock accelerations during running. However, no study to date has included a direct comparison of their behaviour measured over the same group of athletes, and therefore great controversy still exists regarding their effectiveness in reducing impact …
Non-degenerate 1,2-silyl shift in silyl substituted alkyltrimethylcyclopentadienes
2005
Abstract The five new silanes C5Me3RSiMenCl3 − n (n = 3, R = i-Pr (5); n = 2, R = i-Pr (6); n = 2, R = s-Bu (7); n = 2, R = cyclohexyl (8); and n = 3, R = t-Bu (9)) were synthesized by reaction of 1-alkyl-2,3,4-trimethylcyclopentadienyl lithium salts with appropriate chlorosilane and characterized by NMR, MS, and IR spectra. At elevated temperatures (250–360 K), all the silanes undergo a non-degenerate sigmatropic silyl rearrangement, which generates non-equivalent structures a and b. The presence of minor structure c was observed in compounds 5 and 7 only. The Diels–Alder cycloaddition of 5 with strong dienophiles tetracyanoethylene (TCNE), and dimethylacetylenedicarboxylate (DMAD) provide…
The Large Area Detector onboard the eXTP mission
2018
The eXTP (enhanced X-ray Timing and Polarimetry) mission is a major project of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) and China National Space Administration (CNSA) currently performing an extended phase A study and proposed for a launch by 2025 in a low-earth orbit. The eXTP scientific payload envisages a suite of instruments (Spectroscopy Focusing Array, Polarimetry Focusing Array, Large Area Detector and Wide Field Monitor) offering unprecedented simultaneous wide-band X-ray spectral, timing and polarimetry sensitivity. A large European consortium is contributing to the eXTP study and it is expected to provide key hardware elements, including a Large Area Detector (LAD). The LAD instrumen…
On the experimental validation of an improved five-parameter model for silicon photovoltaic modules
2012
Abstract This paper presents the experimental validation of a new five-parameter model capable of analytically describing the I–V characteristic of a silicon photovoltaic module for each generic condition of operative temperature and solar irradiance. The operating current calculated with the model was validated on the basis of a series of experimental measurements performed in the field on two commercial silicon photovoltaic panels connected to a set of nine constant values of the electrical load. In order to examine the panels working in almost steady-state conditions only the data-sets of the sunniest days from sunrise to sunset were used. Unfortunately the production spread of photovolt…
